Genesis, Chapter 45

Yosef makes himself known to his brothers, tells them that God sent him ahead to preserve life, and sends them to bring their father to dwell in Goshen; Par’oh sends wagons, and Yaakov hears that Yosef is alive and resolves to go and see him.

Yosef makes himself known

45:1Then Yosef (Joseph) could not restrain himself before all those that stood by him; and he cried, “Make every man go out from me.” And no man stood with him, while Yosef made himself known unto his brothers.

45:2And he wept aloud; and the Egyptians heard, and the house of Par’oh (Pharaoh) heard.

45:3And Yosef said unto his brothers, “I am Yosef; does my father yet live?” And his brothers could not answer him; for they were troubled at his presence.

45:4And Yosef said unto his brothers, “Come near to me, I pray you.” And they came near. And he said, “I am Yosef your brother, whom you sold into Mitzrayim (Egypt).

45:5Now therefore do not be grieved, nor angry with yourselves, that you sold me here; for God sent me before you to preserve life.

45:6For these two years the famine has been in the land; and there are yet five years, in which there shall be neither plowing nor harvest.

45:7And God sent me before you to preserve for you a posterity in the earth, and to save your lives by a great deliverance.

45:8So now it was not you that sent me here, but God; and He has made me a father to Par’oh, and lord of all his house, and ruler over all the land of Mitzrayim.

Yosef sends for his father

45:9Hurry, and go up to my father, and say unto him, Thus says your son Yosef: God has made me lord of all Mitzrayim; come down unto me, do not delay;

45:10and you shall dwell in the land of Goshen, and you shall be near unto me, you, and your children, and your children’s children, and your flocks, and your herds, and all that you have;

45:11and there will I provide for you; for there are yet five years of famine; lest you come to poverty, you, and your household, and all that you have.

45:12And, behold, your eyes see, and the eyes of my brother Binyamin (Benjamin), that it is my mouth that speaks unto you.

45:13And you shall tell my father of all my glory in Mitzrayim, and of all that you have seen; and you shall hurry and bring my father down here.”

45:14And he fell upon his brother Binyamin’s neck, and wept; and Binyamin wept upon his neck.

45:15And he kissed all his brothers, and wept upon them; and after that his brothers talked with him.

Par’oh invites Yosef’s family

45:16And the report was heard in Par’oh’s house, saying, “Yosef’s brothers have come”; and it pleased Par’oh well, and his servants.

45:17And Par’oh said unto Yosef, “Say unto your brothers, This do: load your beasts, and go, get you unto the land of Kena’an (Canaan);

45:18and take your father and your households, and come unto me; and I will give you the good of the land of Mitzrayim, and you shall eat the fat of the land.

45:19Now you are commanded, this do: take wagons out of the land of Mitzrayim for your little ones, and for your wives, and bring your father, and come.

45:20Also do not be concerned about your belongings; for the good of all the land of Mitzrayim is yours.”

45:21And the children of Yisrael (Israel) did so; and Yosef gave them wagons, according to the command of Par’oh, and gave them provisions for the way.

45:22To all of them he gave each man changes of clothing; but to Binyamin he gave three hundred pieces of silver, and five changes of clothing.

45:23And to his father he sent in this way: ten donkeys laden with the good things of Mitzrayim, and ten she-donkeys laden with grain and bread and food for his father for the way.

45:24So he sent his brothers away, and they departed; and he said unto them, “Do not quarrel on the way.”

Yosef is yet alive

45:25And they went up out of Mitzrayim, and came into the land of Kena’an unto Yaakov (Jacob) their father,

45:26and told him, saying, “Yosef is yet alive, and he is ruler over all the land of Mitzrayim.” And Yaakov’s heart fainted, for he did not believe them.

45:27And they told him all the words of Yosef, which he had said unto them; and when he saw the wagons which Yosef had sent to carry him, the spirit of Yaakov their father revived.

45:28And Yisrael said, “It is enough; Yosef my son is yet alive; I will go and see him before I die.”

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Genesis they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 31 and 32; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
