Text (469) 608-9944Genesis, Chapter 43
When the grain is eaten up Yehudah becomes surety for Binyamin, and Yisrael sends the brothers back with a present and double money; they are brought into Yosef’s house, Yosef sees Binyamin and weeps in secret, and they eat and drink with him.
43:1And the famine was severe in the land.
43:2And it came to pass, when they had eaten up the grain which they had brought out of Mitzrayim (Egypt), their father said unto them, “Go again, buy us a little food.”
43:3And Yehudah (Judah) spoke unto him, saying, “The man solemnly warned us, saying, You shall not see my face, unless your brother is with you.
43:4If you will send our brother with us, we will go down and buy you food;
43:5but if you will not send him, we will not go down; for the man said unto us, You shall not see my face, unless your brother is with you.”
43:6And Yisrael (Israel) said, “Why did you deal so ill with me, as to tell the man whether you had yet a brother?”
43:7And they said, “The man asked us closely about ourselves, and about our kindred, saying, Is your father yet alive? Have you another brother? And we told him according to these words. Could we possibly know that he would say, Bring your brother down?”
43:8And Yehudah said unto Yisrael his father, “Send the lad with me, and we will arise and go; that we may live, and not die, both we, and you, and also our little ones.
43:9I will be surety for him; from my hand you shall require him; if I do not bring him unto you, and set him before you, then let me bear the blame forever.
43:10For had we not lingered, surely by now we would have returned a second time.”
43:11And their father Yisrael said unto them, “If it must be so now, do this: take of the choicest fruits of the land in your vessels, and carry down a present to the man, a little balm, and a little honey, spices and myrrh, nuts and almonds;
43:12and take double money in your hand; and the money that was brought back in the mouth of your bags, carry it back in your hand; perhaps it was an oversight;
43:13take also your brother, and arise, go again unto the man;
43:14and God Almighty give you mercy before the man, that he may release unto you your other brother and Binyamin (Benjamin). And as for me, if I am bereaved, I am bereaved.”
43:15And the men took that present, and they took double money in their hand, and Binyamin; and rose up, and went down to Mitzrayim, and stood before Yosef (Joseph).
43:16And when Yosef saw Binyamin with them, he said to the ruler of his house, “Bring the men into the house, and slaughter an animal, and make ready; for the men shall dine with me at noon.”
43:17And the man did as Yosef said; and the man brought the men into Yosef’s house.
43:18And the men were afraid, because they were brought into Yosef’s house; and they said, “Because of the money that was returned in our bags at the first time we are brought in; that he may seek occasion against us, and fall upon us, and take us for slaves, and our donkeys.”
43:19And they came near to the steward of Yosef’s house, and they spoke with him at the door of the house,
43:20and said, “Oh, my lord, we came indeed down at the first time to buy food;
43:21and it came to pass, when we came to the lodging place, that we opened our bags, and, behold, every man’s money was in the mouth of his bag, our money in full weight; and we have brought it back in our hand.
43:22And other money have we brought down in our hand to buy food; we do not know who put our money in our bags.”
43:23And he said, “Peace be to you, do not fear: your God, and the God of your father, has given you treasure in your bags; your money came to me.” And he brought Shimon (Simeon) out unto them.
43:24And the man brought the men into Yosef’s house, and gave them water, and they washed their feet; and he gave their donkeys fodder.
43:25And they made ready the present for Yosef’s coming at noon; for they heard that they should eat bread there.
43:26And when Yosef came home, they brought him the present which was in their hand into the house, and bowed down to him to the earth.
43:27And he asked them of their welfare, and said, “Is your father well, the old man of whom you spoke? Is he yet alive?”
43:28And they answered, “Your servant our father is well, he is yet alive.” And they bowed their heads, and bowed down.
43:29And he lifted up his eyes, and saw Binyamin his brother, his mother’s son, and said, “Is this your youngest brother, of whom you spoke unto me?” And he said, “God be gracious unto you, my son.”
43:30And Yosef made haste; for his compassion was stirred for his brother; and he sought where to weep; and he entered into his chamber, and wept there.
43:31And he washed his face, and came out, and restrained himself, and said, “Serve the bread.”
43:32And they served him by himself, and them by themselves, and the Egyptians, who ate with him, by themselves; because the Egyptians could not eat bread with the Hebrews; for that is an abomination unto the Egyptians.
43:33And they sat before him, the firstborn according to his birthright, and the youngest according to his youth; and the men marveled one at another.
43:34And he sent portions unto them from before him; but Binyamin’s portion was five times as much as any of theirs. And they drank, and were merry with him.
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the Hebrew shows the written form, the reading follows in small type, and a note under the verse gives both. The English follows the reading. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Genesis they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 31 and 32; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
