Text (469) 608-9944Genesis, Chapter 42
Yaakov sends ten of his sons to Mitzrayim to buy grain; Yosef recognizes his brothers, calls them spies, keeps Shimon bound, and sends them home with their money in their sacks, and Yaakov refuses to let Binyamin go down.
42:1Now when Yaakov (Jacob) saw that there was grain in Mitzrayim (Egypt), Yaakov said unto his sons, “Why do you look one upon another?”
42:2And he said, “Behold, I have heard that there is grain in Mitzrayim; go down there, and buy for us from there; that we may live, and not die.”
42:3And Yosef’s ten brothers went down to buy grain from Mitzrayim.
42:4But Binyamin (Benjamin), Yosef’s brother, Yaakov did not send with his brothers; for he said, “Lest harm befall him.”
42:5And the sons of Yisrael (Israel) came to buy grain among those that came; for the famine was in the land of Kena’an (Canaan).
42:6And Yosef (Joseph) was the governor over the land; he it was that sold to all the people of the land; and Yosef’s brothers came, and bowed down to him with their faces to the earth.
42:7And Yosef saw his brothers, and he recognized them, but made himself strange unto them, and spoke roughly with them; and he said unto them, “Where do you come from?” And they said, “From the land of Kena’an to buy food.”
42:8And Yosef recognized his brothers, but they did not recognize him.
42:9And Yosef remembered the dreams which he dreamed of them, and said unto them, “You are spies; to see the nakedness of the land you have come.”
42:10And they said unto him, “No, my lord, but to buy food have your servants come.
42:11We are all one man’s sons; we are honest men; your servants are not spies.”
42:12And he said unto them, “No, but to see the nakedness of the land you have come.”
42:13And they said, “Your servants are twelve brothers, the sons of one man in the land of Kena’an; and, behold, the youngest is this day with our father, and one is no more.”
42:14And Yosef said unto them, “That is it that I spoke unto you, saying, You are spies.
42:15By this you shall be tested: by the life of Par’oh (Pharaoh), you shall not go forth from here, unless your youngest brother comes here.
42:16Send one of you, and let him fetch your brother, and you shall be kept bound, that your words may be tested, whether there is any truth in you; or else by the life of Par’oh surely you are spies.”
42:17And he put them all together into custody three days.
42:18And Yosef said unto them the third day, “Do this, and live; for I fear God:
42:19if you are honest men, let one of your brothers be bound in the house of your custody; and you go, carry grain for the famine of your houses;
42:20but bring your youngest brother unto me; so shall your words be verified, and you shall not die.” And they did so.
42:21And they said one to another, “We are truly guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the anguish of his soul, when he pleaded with us, and we would not hear; therefore this distress has come upon us.”
42:22And Reuven (Reuben) answered them, saying, “Did I not speak unto you, saying, Do not sin against the child; and you would not hear? Therefore, behold, also his blood is required.”
42:23And they did not know that Yosef understood them; for he spoke unto them by an interpreter.
42:24And he turned himself away from them, and wept; and returned to them again, and spoke with them, and took Shimon (Simeon) from among them, and bound him before their eyes.
42:25Then Yosef commanded to fill their vessels with grain, and to restore every man’s money into his sack, and to give them provisions for the way; and thus he did unto them.
42:26And they loaded their donkeys with their grain, and departed from there.
42:27And as one of them opened his sack to give his donkey fodder at the lodging place, he saw his money; for, behold, it was in the mouth of his bag.
42:28And he said unto his brothers, “My money is restored; and, lo, it is even in my bag.” And their heart failed them, and they were afraid, saying one to another, “What is this that God has done unto us?”
42:29And they came unto Yaakov their father unto the land of Kena’an, and told him all that befell them, saying,
42:30“The man, who is the lord of the land, spoke roughly with us, and took us for spies of the country.
42:31And we said unto him, We are honest men; we are not spies.
42:32We are twelve brothers, sons of our father; one is no more, and the youngest is this day with our father in the land of Kena’an.
42:33And the man, the lord of the country, said unto us, By this I shall know that you are honest men: leave one of your brothers here with me, and take food for the famine of your households, and be gone;
42:34and bring your youngest brother unto me; then I shall know that you are not spies, but that you are honest men; so will I deliver your brother to you, and you shall trade in the land.”
42:35And it came to pass as they emptied their sacks, that, behold, every man’s bundle of money was in his sack; and when both they and their father saw their bundles of money, they were afraid.
42:36And Yaakov their father said unto them, “Me have you bereaved of my children: Yosef is no more, and Shimon is no more, and you will take Binyamin away; all these things have come upon me.”
42:37And Reuven spoke unto his father, saying, “Slay my two sons, if I bring him not to you; deliver him into my hand, and I will bring him back to you.”

42:38And he said, “My son shall not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he alone is left; if harm befall him by the way in which you go, then you will bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to Sheol (the grave).”

Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Genesis they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 31 and 32; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
