Genesis, Chapter 41

Par’oh dreams of seven fat and seven lean cows and of seven full and seven thin ears; the chief cupbearer remembers Yosef, who interprets the dreams as years of plenty and famine, is set over all the land of Mitzrayim, has two sons, stores up grain, and sells it in the famine.

Par’oh’s dreams

41:1And it came to pass at the end of two full years, that Par’oh (Pharaoh) dreamed; and, behold, he stood by the river.

41:2And, behold, there came up out of the river seven cows, handsome to look at and fat of flesh; and they fed in a meadow.

41:3And, behold, seven other cows came up after them out of the river, ugly to look at and lean of flesh; and stood by the other cows upon the bank of the river.

41:4And the ugly and lean-fleshed cows ate up the seven handsome and fat cows. So Par’oh awoke.

41:5And he slept and dreamed the second time; and, behold, seven ears of grain came up upon one stalk, plump and good.

41:6And, behold, seven thin ears, blasted with the east wind, sprang up after them.

41:7And the seven thin ears swallowed up the seven plump and full ears. And Par’oh awoke, and, behold, it was a dream.

41:8And it came to pass in the morning that his spirit was troubled; and he sent and called for all the magicians of Mitzrayim (Egypt), and all its wise men; and Par’oh told them his dream; but there was none that could interpret them unto Par’oh.

The cupbearer remembers Yosef

41:9Then the chief cupbearer spoke unto Par’oh, saying, “I do remember my faults this day:

41:10Par’oh was angry with his servants, and put me in custody in the house of the captain of the guard, both me and the chief baker;

41:11and we dreamed a dream in one night, I and he; we dreamed each man according to the interpretation of his dream.

41:12And there was there with us a young man, a Hebrew, servant to the captain of the guard; and we told him, and he interpreted to us our dreams; to each man according to his dream he interpreted.

41:13And it came to pass, as he interpreted to us, so it was; me he restored unto my office, and him he hanged.”

Yosef interprets the dreams

41:14Then Par’oh sent and called Yosef (Joseph), and they brought him hastily out of the dungeon; and he shaved himself, and changed his garments, and came in unto Par’oh.

41:15And Par’oh said unto Yosef, “I have dreamed a dream, and there is none that can interpret it; and I have heard it said of you, that you can understand a dream to interpret it.”

41:16And Yosef answered Par’oh, saying, “It is not in me; God shall give Par’oh an answer of peace.”

41:17And Par’oh said unto Yosef, “In my dream, behold, I stood upon the bank of the river;

41:18and, behold, there came up out of the river seven cows, fat of flesh and handsome in form; and they fed in a meadow;

41:19and, behold, seven other cows came up after them, poor and very ugly in form and lean of flesh, such as I never saw in all the land of Mitzrayim for badness;

41:20and the lean and the ugly cows ate up the first seven fat cows;

41:21and when they had eaten them up, it could not be known that they had eaten them; but they were still ugly, as at the beginning. So I awoke.

41:22And I saw in my dream, and, behold, seven ears came up on one stalk, full and good;

41:23and, behold, seven ears, withered, thin, and blasted with the east wind, sprang up after them;

41:24and the thin ears swallowed up the seven good ears. And I told this unto the magicians; but there was none that could declare it to me.”

41:25And Yosef said unto Par’oh, “The dream of Par’oh is one: God has shown Par’oh what He is about to do.

41:26The seven good cows are seven years; and the seven good ears are seven years: the dream is one.

41:27And the seven thin and ugly cows that came up after them are seven years; and the seven empty ears blasted with the east wind shall be seven years of famine.

41:28This is the thing which I have spoken unto Par’oh: what God is about to do He has shown unto Par’oh.

41:29Behold, there come seven years of great plenty throughout all the land of Mitzrayim;

41:30and there shall arise after them seven years of famine; and all the plenty shall be forgotten in the land of Mitzrayim; and the famine shall consume the land;

41:31and the plenty shall not be known in the land by reason of that famine following; for it shall be very severe.

41:32And because the dream was repeated unto Par’oh twice, it is because the thing is established by God, and God will shortly bring it to pass.

41:33Now therefore let Par’oh look out a man discerning and wise, and set him over the land of Mitzrayim.

41:34Let Par’oh do this, and let him appoint overseers over the land, and take up the fifth part of the land of Mitzrayim in the seven years of plenty.

41:35And let them gather all the food of those good years that come, and lay up grain under the hand of Par’oh, and let them keep food in the cities.

41:36And that food shall be a store for the land against the seven years of famine, which shall be in the land of Mitzrayim; that the land perish not through the famine.”

Yosef set over Mitzrayim

41:37And the thing was good in the eyes of Par’oh, and in the eyes of all his servants.

41:38And Par’oh said unto his servants, “Can we find such a one as this, a man in whom the spirit of God is?”

41:39And Par’oh said unto Yosef, “Since God has shown you all this, there is none so discerning and wise as you are.

41:40You shall be over my house, and according unto your word shall all my people be ruled; only in the throne will I be greater than you.”

41:41And Par’oh said unto Yosef, “See, I have set you over all the land of Mitzrayim.”

41:42And Par’oh took off his signet ring from his hand, and put it upon Yosef’s hand, and arrayed him in garments of fine linen, and put a gold chain about his neck;

41:43and he made him to ride in the second chariot which he had; and they cried before him, “Avrekh (Bow the knee)!” And he set him over all the land of Mitzrayim.

41:44And Par’oh said unto Yosef, “I am Par’oh, and without you shall no man lift up his hand or his foot in all the land of Mitzrayim.”

41:45And Par’oh called Yosef’s name Tzafnat-Pa’neaḥ (Zaphnath-paaneah); and he gave him as wife Asnat (Asenath) the daughter of Poti-Fera (Poti-pherah) priest of On. And Yosef went out over all the land of Mitzrayim.

The years of plenty

41:46And Yosef was thirty years old when he stood before Par’oh king of Mitzrayim. And Yosef went out from the presence of Par’oh, and went throughout all the land of Mitzrayim.

41:47And in the seven years of plenty the earth brought forth by handfuls.

41:48And he gathered up all the food of the seven years, which were in the land of Mitzrayim, and laid up the food in the cities: the food of the field, which was round about every city, he laid up in the same.

41:49And Yosef gathered grain as the sand of the sea, very much, until he stopped counting; for it was without number.

41:50And unto Yosef were born two sons before the year of famine came, whom Asnat the daughter of Poti-Fera priest of On bore unto him.

41:51And Yosef called the name of the firstborn Menasheh (Manasseh): “For God,” he said, “has made me forget all my toil, and all my father’s house.”

41:52And the name of the second he called Efrayim (Ephraim): “For God has made me fruitful in the land of my affliction.”

The years of famine

41:53And the seven years of plenty, that was in the land of Mitzrayim, came to an end.

41:54And the seven years of famine began to come, as Yosef had said; and there was famine in all lands; but in all the land of Mitzrayim there was bread.

41:55And when all the land of Mitzrayim was famished, the people cried to Par’oh for bread; and Par’oh said unto all the Egyptians, “Go unto Yosef; what he says to you, do.”

41:56And the famine was over all the face of the earth; and Yosef opened all the storehouses, and sold unto the Egyptians; and the famine grew severe in the land of Mitzrayim.

41:57And all countries came into Mitzrayim to Yosef to buy grain; because the famine was severe in all the earth.

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
