Genesis, Chapter 31

Hashem tells Yaakov to return to the land of his fathers; with Raḥel and Leah he flees from Lavan while Raḥel steals the household idols, Lavan pursues and overtakes him in the mount of Gil’ad, and the two make a covenant at the heap called Gal’ed.

Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. Verse 31:55 of most English Bibles is 32:1 here.

Hashem tells Yaakov to return

31:1And he heard the words of Lavan’s sons, saying, “Yaakov (Jacob) has taken away all that was our father’s; and of that which was our father’s has he gotten all this glory.”

31:2And Yaakov saw the face of Lavan (Laban), and, behold, it was not toward him as before.

31:3And Hashem said unto Yaakov, “Return unto the land of your fathers, and to your kindred; and I will be with you.”

31:4And Yaakov sent and called Raḥel (Rachel) and Leah to the field unto his flock,

31:5and said unto them, “I see your father’s face, that it is not toward me as before; but the God of my father has been with me.

31:6And you know that with all my strength I have served your father.

31:7And your father has deceived me, and changed my wages ten times; but God did not allow him to harm me.

31:8If he said thus, ‘The speckled shall be your wages,’ then all the cattle bore speckled; and if he said thus, ‘The streaked shall be your hire,’ then all the cattle bore streaked.

31:9Thus God has taken away the cattle of your father, and given them to me.

31:10And it came to pass at the time that the cattle conceived, that I lifted up my eyes, and saw in a dream, and, behold, the rams which leaped upon the cattle were streaked, speckled, and mottled.

31:11And the angel of God spoke unto me in the dream, saying, ‘Yaakov’; and I said, ‘Here I am.’

31:12And he said, ‘Lift up now your eyes, and see, all the rams which leap upon the cattle are streaked, speckled, and mottled; for I have seen all that Lavan does unto you.

31:13I am the God of Beit-El, where you anointed the pillar, and where you vowed a vow unto Me. Now arise, get out from this land, and return unto the land of your kindred.’”

31:14And Raḥel and Leah answered and said unto him, “Is there yet any portion or inheritance for us in our father’s house?

31:15Are we not counted by him as strangers? For he has sold us, and has quite devoured also our money.

31:16For all the riches which God has taken from our father, that is ours, and our children’s. Now then, whatever God has said unto you, do.”

Yaakov flees from Lavan

31:17Then Yaakov rose up, and set his sons and his wives upon the camels;

31:18and he carried away all his cattle, and all his goods which he had gotten, the cattle of his getting, which he had gotten in Paddan-Aram (Padan-aram), to go to Yitzḥak (Isaac) his father in the land of Kena’an (Canaan).

31:19And Lavan had gone to shear his sheep; and Raḥel stole the household idols that were her father’s.

31:20And Yaakov stole away unawares from Lavan the Arami (Syrian), in that he did not tell him that he fled.

31:21So he fled with all that he had; and he rose up, and passed over the river, and set his face toward the mount of Gil’ad (Gilead).

Lavan overtakes Yaakov

31:22And it was told Lavan on the third day that Yaakov had fled.

31:23And he took his brothers with him, and pursued after him seven days’ journey; and he overtook him in the mount of Gil’ad.

31:24And God came to Lavan the Arami in a dream by night, and said unto him, “Take heed that you do not speak to Yaakov either good or bad.”

31:25Then Lavan overtook Yaakov. Now Yaakov had pitched his tent in the mount; and Lavan with his brothers pitched in the mount of Gil’ad.

31:26And Lavan said to Yaakov, “What have you done, that you have stolen away unawares from me, and carried away my daughters, as captives taken with the sword?

31:27Why did you flee away secretly, and steal away from me, and did not tell me, that I might have sent you away with joy, and with songs, with tambourine, and with harp?

31:28And you have not allowed me to kiss my sons and my daughters? You have now done foolishly in so doing.

31:29It is in the power of my hand to do you harm; but the God of your father spoke unto me last night, saying, ‘Take heed that you do not speak to Yaakov either good or bad.’

31:30And now, though you would needs be gone, because you longed greatly after your father’s house, yet why have you stolen my gods?”

31:31And Yaakov answered and said to Lavan, “Because I was afraid; for I said, ‘Perhaps you would take your daughters from me by force.’

31:32With whomever you find your gods, let him not live; before our brothers discern what is yours with me, and take it to you.” For Yaakov did not know that Raḥel had stolen them.

31:33And Lavan went into Yaakov’s tent, and into Leah’s tent, and into the two maidservants’ tents; but he did not find them. Then he went out of Leah’s tent, and entered into Raḥel’s tent.

31:34Now Raḥel had taken the household idols, and put them in the camel’s saddle, and sat upon them. And Lavan searched all the tent, but did not find them.

31:35And she said to her father, “Let it not displease my lord that I cannot rise up before you; for the way of women is upon me.” And he searched, but did not find the household idols.

Yaakov contends with Lavan

31:36And Yaakov was angry, and contended with Lavan; and Yaakov answered and said to Lavan, “What is my trespass? What is my sin, that you have so hotly pursued after me?

31:37Whereas you have searched all my things, what have you found of all your household things? Set it here before my brothers and your brothers, that they may judge between us both.

31:38These twenty years I have been with you; your ewes and your she-goats have not cast their young, and the rams of your flock I have not eaten.

31:39That which was torn by beasts I did not bring unto you; I bore the loss of it; of my hand you required it, whether stolen by day, or stolen by night.

31:40Thus I was: in the day the drought consumed me, and the frost by night; and my sleep departed from my eyes.

31:41Thus have I been twenty years in your house; I served you fourteen years for your two daughters, and six years for your cattle; and you have changed my wages ten times.

31:42Except the God of my father, the God of Avraham (Abraham), and the Fear of Yitzḥak, had been with me, surely you would have sent me away now empty. God has seen my affliction and the labor of my hands, and rebuked you last night.”

The covenant at Gal’ed

31:43And Lavan answered and said unto Yaakov, “These daughters are my daughters, and these children are my children, and these cattle are my cattle, and all that you see is mine; and what can I do this day unto these my daughters, or unto their children which they have borne?

31:44Now therefore come, let us make a covenant, I and you; and let it be for a witness between me and you.”

31:45And Yaakov took a stone, and set it up for a pillar.

31:46And Yaakov said unto his brothers, “Gather stones”; and they took stones, and made a heap; and they ate there upon the heap.

31:47And Lavan called it Yegar-Sahaduta (Jegar-sahadutha); but Yaakov called it Gal’ed (Galeed).

31:48And Lavan said, “This heap is a witness between me and you this day.” Therefore was the name of it called Gal’ed;

31:49and Mitzpah (Mizpah); for he said, “Hashem watch between me and you, when we are absent one from another.

31:50If you shall afflict my daughters, or if you shall take other wives besides my daughters, no man is with us; see, God is witness between me and you.”

31:51And Lavan said to Yaakov, “Behold this heap, and behold this pillar, which I have cast between me and you;

31:52this heap be witness, and this pillar be witness, that I will not pass over this heap to you, and that you shall not pass over this heap and this pillar unto me, for harm.

31:53The God of Avraham, and the God of Naḥor (Nahor), the God of their father, judge between us.” And Yaakov swore by the Fear of his father Yitzḥak.

31:54Then Yaakov offered a sacrifice upon the mount, and called his brothers to eat bread; and they ate bread, and stayed all night in the mount.

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Genesis they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 31 and 32; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
