Text (469) 608-9944Genesis, Chapter 30
Raḥel gives Bilhah to Yaakov and Leah gives Zilpah, and they bear him sons; Leah bears Yissachar, Zevulun and Dinah, Raḥel bears Yosef, and Yaakov agrees with Lavan on wages of the speckled and spotted flock and grows exceedingly rich.
30:1And when Raḥel (Rachel) saw that she bore Yaakov (Jacob) no children, Raḥel envied her sister; and said unto Yaakov, “Give me children, or else I die.”
30:2And Yaakov’s anger was kindled against Raḥel; and he said, “Am I in God’s place, who has withheld from you the fruit of the womb?”
30:3And she said, “Behold my maid Bilhah, go in unto her; and she shall bear upon my knees, that I may also have children by her.”
30:4And she gave him Bilhah her handmaid to wife; and Yaakov went in unto her.
30:5And Bilhah conceived, and bore Yaakov a son.
30:6And Raḥel said, “God has judged me, and has also heard my voice, and has given me a son”; therefore she called his name Dan.
30:7And Bilhah Raḥel’s maid conceived again, and bore Yaakov a second son.
30:8And Raḥel said, “With great wrestlings have I wrestled with my sister, and I have prevailed”; and she called his name Naftali (Naphtali).
30:9When Leah saw that she had left off bearing, she took Zilpah her maid, and gave her to Yaakov to wife.
30:10And Zilpah Leah’s maid bore Yaakov a son.
30:11And Leah said, “A troop comes”; and she called his name Gad.
30:12And Zilpah Leah’s maid bore Yaakov a second son.
30:13And Leah said, “Happy am I, for the daughters will call me blessed”; and she called his name Asher.
30:14And Reuven (Reuben) went in the days of wheat harvest, and found mandrakes in the field, and brought them unto his mother Leah. Then Raḥel said to Leah, “Give me, I pray you, of your son’s mandrakes.”
30:15And she said unto her, “Is it a small matter that you have taken my husband? And would you take away my son’s mandrakes also?” And Raḥel said, “Therefore he shall lie with you tonight for your son’s mandrakes.”
30:16And Yaakov came out of the field in the evening, and Leah went out to meet him, and said, “You must come in unto me; for surely I have hired you with my son’s mandrakes.” And he lay with her that night.
30:17And God hearkened unto Leah, and she conceived, and bore Yaakov the fifth son.
30:18And Leah said, “God has given me my hire, because I have given my maiden to my husband”; and she called his name Yissachar (Issachar).
30:19And Leah conceived again, and bore Yaakov the sixth son.
30:20And Leah said, “God has endowed me with a good dowry; now will my husband dwell with me, because I have borne him six sons”; and she called his name Zevulun (Zebulun).
30:21And afterwards she bore a daughter, and called her name Dinah.
30:22And God remembered Raḥel, and God hearkened to her, and opened her womb.
30:23And she conceived, and bore a son; and said, “God has taken away my reproach.”
30:24And she called his name Yosef (Joseph); and said, “Hashem shall add to me another son.”
30:25And it came to pass, when Raḥel had borne Yosef, that Yaakov said unto Lavan (Laban), “Send me away, that I may go unto my own place, and to my country.
30:26Give me my wives and my children, for whom I have served you, and let me go; for you know my service which I have done you.”
30:27And Lavan said unto him, “I pray you, if I have found favor in your eyes, stay; for I have learned by experience that Hashem has blessed me for your sake.”
30:28And he said, “Name me your wages, and I will give it.”
30:29And he said unto him, “You know how I have served you, and how your cattle fared with me.
30:30For it was little which you had before I came, and it has now increased unto a multitude; and Hashem has blessed you since my coming. And now when shall I provide for my own house also?”
30:31And he said, “What shall I give you?” And Yaakov said, “You shall not give me anything; if you will do this thing for me, I will again feed and keep your flock.
30:32I will pass through all your flock today, removing from there all the speckled and spotted cattle, and all the brown cattle among the sheep, and the spotted and speckled among the goats; and of such shall be my hire.
30:33So shall my righteousness answer for me in time to come, when it shall come for my hire before your face: every one that is not speckled and spotted among the goats, and brown among the sheep, that shall be counted stolen with me.”
30:34And Lavan said, “Behold, let it be according to your word.”
30:35And he removed that day the he-goats that were streaked and spotted, and all the she-goats that were speckled and spotted, every one that had some white in it, and all the brown among the sheep, and gave them into the hand of his sons.
30:36And he set three days’ journey between himself and Yaakov; and Yaakov fed the rest of Lavan’s flocks.
30:37And Yaakov took rods of green poplar, and of the hazel and chestnut tree; and peeled white streaks in them, and made the white appear which was in the rods.
30:38And he set the rods which he had peeled before the flocks in the gutters in the watering troughs when the flocks came to drink, that they should conceive when they came to drink.
30:39And the flocks conceived before the rods, and brought forth cattle streaked, speckled, and spotted.
30:40And Yaakov separated the lambs, and set the faces of the flocks toward the streaked, and all the brown in the flock of Lavan; and he put his own flocks by themselves, and did not put them unto Lavan’s cattle.
30:41And it came to pass, whenever the stronger cattle conceived, that Yaakov laid the rods before the eyes of the cattle in the gutters, that they might conceive among the rods.
30:42But when the cattle were feeble, he did not put them in; so the feebler were Lavan’s, and the stronger Yaakov’s.
30:43And the man increased exceedingly, and had much cattle, and maidservants, and menservants, and camels, and donkeys.

Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the Hebrew shows the written form, the reading follows in small type, and a note under the verse gives both. The English follows the reading. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Genesis they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 31 and 32; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
