Text (469) 608-9944Genesis, Chapter 32
Lavan departs and angels of God meet Yaakov at Maḥanayim; Yaakov sends messengers to Esav, hears that he is coming with four hundred men, divides his camp, prays, and sends a present ahead, and at the ford of the Yabbok a man wrestles with him until daybreak and names him Yisrael.
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. Verse 1 here is 31:55 in most English Bibles. Verses 2–33 here are 32:1–32 in most English Bibles.
32:1And early in the morning Lavan (Laban) rose up, and kissed his sons and his daughters, and blessed them; and Lavan departed, and returned unto his place.
32:2And Yaakov went on his way, and the angels of God met him.
32:3And when Yaakov saw them, he said, “This is God’s camp”; and he called the name of that place Maḥanayim (Mahanaim).
32:4And Yaakov (Jacob) sent messengers before him to Esav (Esau) his brother unto the land of Se’ir (Seir), the country of Edom.
32:5And he commanded them, saying, “Thus shall you speak unto my lord Esav: ‘Your servant Yaakov says thus: I have sojourned with Lavan, and stayed there until now;
32:6and I have oxen, and donkeys, flocks, and menservants, and womenservants; and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find favor in your sight.’”
32:7And the messengers returned to Yaakov, saying, “We came to your brother Esav, and he also is coming to meet you, and four hundred men with him.”
32:8Then Yaakov was greatly afraid and distressed; and he divided the people that were with him, and the flocks, and herds, and the camels, into two camps;
32:9and said, “If Esav comes to the one camp, and strikes it, then the other camp which is left shall escape.”
32:10And Yaakov said, “O God of my father Avraham (Abraham), and God of my father Yitzḥak (Isaac), Hashem, who said unto me, ‘Return unto your country, and to your kindred, and I will deal well with you’:
32:11I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and of all the truth, which You have shown unto Your servant; for with my staff I passed over this Yarden (Jordan), and now I have become two camps.
32:12Deliver me, I pray You, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esav; for I fear him, lest he come and strike me, the mother with the children.
32:13And You said, ‘I will surely do you good, and make your seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.’”
32:14And he lodged there that same night; and took of that which came to his hand a present for Esav his brother:
32:15two hundred she-goats, and twenty he-goats, two hundred ewes, and twenty rams,
32:16thirty nursing camels with their colts, forty cows, and ten bulls, twenty she-donkeys, and ten foals.
32:17And he delivered them into the hand of his servants, every drove by itself; and said unto his servants, “Pass over before me, and put a space between drove and drove.”
32:18And he commanded the foremost, saying, “When Esav my brother meets you, and asks you, saying, ‘Whose are you? And where are you going? And whose are these before you?’
32:19then you shall say, ‘They are your servant Yaakov’s; it is a present sent unto my lord Esav; and, behold, he also is behind us.’”
32:20And so he commanded the second, and the third, and all that followed the droves, saying, “In this manner shall you speak unto Esav, when you find him.
32:21And you shall say moreover, ‘Behold, your servant Yaakov is behind us.’” For he said, “I will appease him with the present that goes before me, and afterward I will see his face; perhaps he will accept me.”
32:22So the present went over before him; and he himself lodged that night in the camp.
32:23And he rose up that night, and took his two wives, and his two womenservants, and his eleven children, and passed over the ford of the Yabbok (Jabbok).
32:24And he took them, and sent them over the stream, and sent over that which he had.
32:25And Yaakov was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day.
32:26And when he saw that he did not prevail against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Yaakov’s thigh was put out of joint, as he wrestled with him.
32:27And he said, “Let me go, for the day is breaking.” And he said, “I will not let you go, unless you bless me.”
32:28And he said unto him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Yaakov.”
32:29And he said, “Your name shall no more be called Yaakov, but Yisrael (Israel); for as a prince you have striven with God and with men, and have prevailed.”
32:30And Yaakov asked him, and said, “Tell me, I pray you, your name.” And he said, “Why is it that you ask after my name?” And he blessed him there.
32:31And Yaakov called the name of the place Peni’el (Peniel): “For I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.”
32:32And as he passed over Penu’el (Penuel) the sun rose upon him, and he limped upon his thigh.
32:33Therefore the children of Yisrael do not eat of the sinew which shrank, which is upon the hollow of the thigh, unto this day; because he touched the hollow of Yaakov’s thigh in the sinew that shrank.
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Genesis they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 31 and 32; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
