Text (469) 608-9944Genesis, Chapter 26
In a famine Yitzḥak goes to Avimelech king of the Pelishtim at Gerar, where Hashem renews the oath sworn to Avraham; Yitzḥak calls Rivkah his sister, grows very great, digs wells amid strife, hears Hashem’s promise at Be’er-Sheva and makes an oath with Avimelech, and Esav takes two Ḥitti wives.
26:1And there was a famine in the land, besides the first famine that was in the days of Avraham (Abraham). And Yitzḥak (Isaac) went unto Avimelech (Abimelech) king of the Pelishtim (Philistines) unto Gerar.
26:2And Hashem appeared unto him, and said, “Do not go down into Mitzrayim (Egypt); dwell in the land which I shall tell you of.
26:3Sojourn in this land, and I will be with you, and will bless you; for unto you, and unto your seed, I will give all these countries, and I will perform the oath which I swore unto Avraham your father;
26:4and I will make your seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto your seed all these countries; and in your seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed;
26:5because Avraham obeyed My voice, and kept My charge, My commandments, My statutes, and My laws.”
26:6And Yitzḥak dwelt in Gerar.
26:7And the men of the place asked him about his wife; and he said, “She is my sister”; for he feared to say, “She is my wife”; “lest,” said he, “the men of the place should kill me for Rivkah (Rebekah)”; because she was fair to look upon.
26:8And it came to pass, when he had been there a long time, that Avimelech king of the Pelishtim looked out at a window, and saw, and, behold, Yitzḥak was sporting with Rivkah his wife.
26:9And Avimelech called Yitzḥak, and said, “Behold, surely she is your wife; and how did you say, ‘She is my sister’?” And Yitzḥak said unto him, “Because I said, ‘Lest I die because of her.’”
26:10And Avimelech said, “What is this you have done unto us? One of the people might easily have lain with your wife, and you would have brought guiltiness upon us.”
26:11And Avimelech charged all his people, saying, “He who touches this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.”
26:12Then Yitzḥak sowed in that land, and received in the same year a hundredfold; and Hashem blessed him.
26:13And the man grew great, and went forward, and grew until he became very great;
26:14for he had possession of flocks, and possession of herds, and a great household of servants; and the Pelishtim envied him.
26:15Now all the wells which his father’s servants had dug in the days of Avraham his father, the Pelishtim had stopped them, and filled them with earth.
26:16And Avimelech said unto Yitzḥak, “Go from us; for you are much mightier than we.”
26:17And Yitzḥak departed from there, and encamped in the valley of Gerar, and dwelt there.
26:18And Yitzḥak dug again the wells of water, which they had dug in the days of Avraham his father; for the Pelishtim had stopped them after the death of Avraham; and he called their names after the names by which his father had called them.
26:19And Yitzḥak’s servants dug in the valley, and found there a well of living water.
26:20And the herdsmen of Gerar strove with Yitzḥak’s herdsmen, saying, “The water is ours”; and he called the name of the well Esek; because they strove with him.
26:21And they dug another well, and strove over that also; and he called the name of it Sitnah.
26:22And he moved away from there, and dug another well; and for that they did not strive; and he called the name of it Reḥovot (Rehoboth); and he said, “For now Hashem has made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land.”
26:23And he went up from there to Be’er-Sheva (Beer-sheba).
26:24And Hashem appeared unto him the same night, and said, “I am the God of Avraham your father; do not fear, for I am with you, and will bless you, and multiply your seed for My servant Avraham’s sake.”
26:25And he built an altar there, and called upon the name of Hashem, and pitched his tent there; and there Yitzḥak’s servants dug a well.
26:26Then Avimelech went to him from Gerar, and Aḥuzat (Ahuzzath) one of his friends, and Pichol (Phichol) the chief captain of his army.
26:27And Yitzḥak said unto them, “Why have you come to me, seeing you hate me, and have sent me away from you?”
26:28And they said, “We saw plainly that Hashem was with you; and we said, ‘Let there be now an oath between us, even between us and you, and let us make a covenant with you,
26:29that you will do us no harm, as we have not touched you, and as we have done unto you nothing but good, and have sent you away in peace.’ You are now the blessed of Hashem.”
26:30And he made them a feast, and they ate and drank.
26:31And they rose up early in the morning, and swore one to another; and Yitzḥak sent them away, and they departed from him in peace.
26:32And it came to pass the same day, that Yitzḥak’s servants came, and told him concerning the well which they had dug, and said unto him, “We have found water.”
26:33And he called it Shivah (Shebah); therefore the name of the city is Be’er-Sheva unto this day.
26:34And Esav (Esau) was forty years old when he took to wife Yehudit (Judith) the daughter of Be’eri (Beeri) the Ḥitti (Hittite), and Basmat (Bashemath) the daughter of Elon the Ḥitti;
26:35and they were a grief of mind unto Yitzḥak and to Rivkah.

Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Genesis they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 31 and 32; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
