Genesis, Chapter 27

When Yitzḥak is old and his eyes are dim he sends Esav to hunt game; Rivkah dresses Yaakov in Esav’s garments with savory food, Yitzḥak blesses Yaakov, Esav cries bitterly for a blessing and plans to kill his brother, and Rivkah sends Yaakov away to Lavan.

Yitzḥak sends Esav to hunt

27:1And it came to pass, that when Yitzḥak (Isaac) was old, and his eyes were dim, so that he could not see, he called Esav (Esau) his elder son, and said unto him, “My son”; and he said unto him, “Here I am.”

27:2And he said, “Behold now, I am old, I do not know the day of my death.

27:3Now therefore take, I pray you, your weapons, your quiver and your bow, and go out to the field, and take me some game;

Written and read. Written צידה, read צָֽיִד. The Hebrew shows the written form (ketiv); the English follows the reading (qere).

27:4and make me savory food, such as I love, and bring it to me, that I may eat; that my soul may bless you before I die.”

Rivkah’s plan

27:5And Rivkah (Rebekah) heard when Yitzḥak spoke to Esav his son. And Esav went to the field to hunt for game, and to bring it.

27:6And Rivkah spoke unto Yaakov (Jacob) her son, saying, “Behold, I heard your father speak unto Esav your brother, saying,

27:7‘Bring me game, and make me savory food, that I may eat, and bless you before Hashem before my death.’

27:8Now therefore, my son, obey my voice according to that which I command you.

27:9Go now to the flock, and fetch me from there two good kids of the goats; and I will make them savory food for your father, such as he loves;

27:10and you shall bring it to your father, that he may eat, and that he may bless you before his death.”

27:11And Yaakov said to Rivkah his mother, “Behold, Esav my brother is a hairy man, and I am a smooth man.

27:12Perhaps my father will feel me, and I shall seem to him as a deceiver; and I shall bring a curse upon me, and not a blessing.”

27:13And his mother said unto him, “Upon me be your curse, my son; only obey my voice, and go fetch them for me.”

27:14And he went, and fetched, and brought them to his mother; and his mother made savory food, such as his father loved.

27:15And Rivkah took the fine garments of her elder son Esav, which were with her in the house, and put them upon Yaakov her younger son;

27:16and she put the skins of the kids of the goats upon his hands, and upon the smooth of his neck;

27:17and she gave the savory food and the bread, which she had prepared, into the hand of her son Yaakov.

Yaakov receives the blessing

27:18And he came unto his father, and said, “My father”; and he said, “Here I am; who are you, my son?”

27:19And Yaakov said unto his father, “I am Esav your firstborn; I have done as you told me. Arise, I pray you, sit and eat of my game, that your soul may bless me.”

27:20And Yitzḥak said unto his son, “How is it that you have found it so quickly, my son?” And he said, “Because Hashem your God brought it to me.”

27:21And Yitzḥak said unto Yaakov, “Come near, I pray you, that I may feel you, my son, whether you are my very son Esav or not.”

27:22And Yaakov went near unto Yitzḥak his father; and he felt him, and said, “The voice is Yaakov’s voice, but the hands are the hands of Esav.”

27:23And he did not recognize him, because his hands were hairy, as his brother Esav’s hands; so he blessed him.

27:24And he said, “Are you my very son Esav?” And he said, “I am.”

27:25And he said, “Bring it near to me, and I will eat of my son’s game, that my soul may bless you.” And he brought it near to him, and he ate; and he brought him wine, and he drank.

27:26And his father Yitzḥak said unto him, “Come near now, and kiss me, my son.”

27:27And he came near, and kissed him; and he smelled the smell of his garments, and blessed him, and said, “See, the smell of my son is as the smell of a field which Hashem has blessed.

27:28Therefore God give you of the dew of heaven, and the fatness of the earth, and plenty of grain and wine.

27:29Let peoples serve you, and nations bow down to you; be lord over your brothers, and let your mother’s sons bow down to you. Cursed be every one who curses you, and blessed be he who blesses you.”

Esav’s bitter cry

27:30And it came to pass, as soon as Yitzḥak had made an end of blessing Yaakov, and Yaakov was yet scarcely gone out from the presence of Yitzḥak his father, that Esav his brother came in from his hunting.

27:31And he also had made savory food, and brought it unto his father, and said unto his father, “Let my father arise, and eat of his son’s game, that your soul may bless me.”

27:32And Yitzḥak his father said unto him, “Who are you?” And he said, “I am your son, your firstborn, Esav.”

27:33And Yitzḥak trembled very exceedingly, and said, “Who? Where is he who has taken game, and brought it to me, and I have eaten of all before you came, and have blessed him? Yes, and he shall be blessed.”

27:34When Esav heard the words of his father, he cried with a great and exceedingly bitter cry, and said unto his father, “Bless me, even me also, O my father.”

27:35And he said, “Your brother came with deceit, and has taken away your blessing.”

27:36And he said, “Is he not rightly named Yaakov? For he has supplanted me these two times: he took away my birthright; and, behold, now he has taken away my blessing.” And he said, “Have you not reserved a blessing for me?”

27:37And Yitzḥak answered and said unto Esav, “Behold, I have made him your lord, and all his brothers have I given to him for servants; and with grain and wine have I sustained him; and what then shall I do for you, my son?”

27:38And Esav said unto his father, “Have you but one blessing, my father? Bless me, even me also, O my father.” And Esav lifted up his voice, and wept.

27:39And Yitzḥak his father answered and said unto him, “Behold, your dwelling shall be the fatness of the earth, and of the dew of heaven from above;

27:40and by your sword shall you live, and shall serve your brother; and it shall come to pass when you shall have the dominion, that you shall break his yoke from off your neck.”

Rivkah sends Yaakov away

27:41And Esav hated Yaakov because of the blessing with which his father blessed him; and Esav said in his heart, “The days of mourning for my father are at hand; then will I slay my brother Yaakov.”

27:42And these words of Esav her elder son were told to Rivkah; and she sent and called Yaakov her younger son, and said unto him, “Behold, your brother Esav, as touching you, comforts himself, purposing to kill you.

27:43Now therefore, my son, obey my voice; and arise, flee to Lavan (Laban) my brother to Ḥaran (Haran);

27:44and stay with him a few days, until your brother’s fury turns away;

27:45until your brother’s anger turns away from you, and he forgets that which you have done to him; then I will send, and fetch you from there. Why should I be deprived also of you both in one day?”

27:46And Rivkah said to Yitzḥak, “I am weary of my life because of the daughters of Ḥet (Heth). If Yaakov takes a wife of the daughters of Ḥet, such as these which are of the daughters of the land, what good shall my life do me?”

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the Hebrew shows the written form, the reading follows in small type, and a note under the verse gives both. The English follows the reading. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
