Text (469) 608-9944Genesis, Chapter 25
Avraham’s sons by Keturah are listed; Avraham dies and is buried by Yitzḥak and Yishma’el in Machpelah, and Yishma’el’s twelve princes are named; Rivkah bears the twins Esav and Yaakov, and Esav sells his birthright for stew.
25:1And Avraham (Abraham) again took a wife, and her name was Keturah.
25:2And she bore him Zimran, and Yokshan (Jokshan), and Medan, and Midyan (Midian), and Yishbak (Ishbak), and Shu’aḥ (Shuah).
25:3And Yokshan begot Sheva (Sheba) and Dedan. And the sons of Dedan were Ashurim (Asshurim), and Letushim, and Le’ummim (Leummim).
25:4And the sons of Midyan: Eifah (Ephah), and Efer (Epher), and Ḥanoch (Hanoch), and Avida (Abidah), and Elda’ah (Eldaah). All these were the children of Keturah.
25:5And Avraham gave all that he had unto Yitzḥak (Isaac).
25:6But unto the sons of the concubines whom Avraham had, Avraham gave gifts; and he sent them away from Yitzḥak his son, while he yet lived, eastward, unto the land of the east.
25:7And these are the days of the years of Avraham’s life which he lived: a hundred and seventy and five years.
25:8Then Avraham breathed his last, and died in a good old age, an old man, and full of years; and was gathered to his people.
25:9And his sons Yitzḥak and Yishma’el (Ishmael) buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Efron (Ephron) the son of Tzoḥar (Zohar) the Ḥitti, which is before Mamre;
25:10the field which Avraham purchased from the children of Ḥet (Heth); there was Avraham buried, and Sarah his wife.
25:11And it came to pass after the death of Avraham, that God blessed Yitzḥak his son; and Yitzḥak dwelt by Be’er-Laḥai-Ro’i (Beer-lahai-roi).
25:12Now these are the generations of Yishma’el, Avraham’s son, whom Hagar the Mitzrit (Egyptian), Sarah’s handmaid, bore unto Avraham.
25:13And these are the names of the sons of Yishma’el, by their names, according to their generations: the firstborn of Yishma’el, Nevayot (Nebajoth); and Kedar, and Adbe’el (Adbeel), and Mivsam (Mibsam),
25:14and Mishma, and Dumah, and Massa,
25:15Ḥadad (Hadad), and Tema, Yetur (Jetur), Nafish (Naphish), and Kedmah (Kedemah).
25:16These are the sons of Yishma’el, and these are their names, by their villages, and by their encampments; twelve princes according to their nations.
25:17And these are the years of the life of Yishma’el: a hundred and thirty and seven years; and he breathed his last and died, and was gathered unto his people.
25:18And they dwelt from Ḥavilah (Havilah) unto Shur, which is before Mitzrayim (Egypt), as you go toward Ashur (Assyria); he settled in the presence of all his brothers.
25:19And these are the generations of Yitzḥak, Avraham’s (Abraham’s) son: Avraham begot Yitzḥak.
25:20And Yitzḥak was forty years old when he took Rivkah (Rebekah) to wife, the daughter of Betu’el (Bethuel) the Arami (Syrian) of Paddan-Aram (Padan-aram), the sister of Lavan (Laban) the Arami.
25:21And Yitzḥak entreated Hashem for his wife, because she was barren; and Hashem was entreated of him, and Rivkah his wife conceived.
25:22And the children struggled together within her; and she said, “If it be so, why am I thus?” And she went to inquire of Hashem.
25:23And Hashem said unto her, “Two nations are in your womb, and two manner of people shall be separated from your bowels; and the one people shall be stronger than the other people; and the elder shall serve the younger.”
25:24And when her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb.
25:25And the first came out red, all over like a hairy garment; and they called his name Esav (Esau).
25:26And after that came his brother out, and his hand took hold on Esav’s heel; and his name was called Yaakov (Jacob). And Yitzḥak was sixty years old when she bore them.
25:27And the boys grew; and Esav was a skillful hunter, a man of the field; and Yaakov was a plain man, dwelling in tents.
25:28And Yitzḥak loved Esav, because he ate of his game; but Rivkah loved Yaakov.
25:29And Yaakov cooked stew; and Esav came from the field, and he was faint.
25:30And Esav said to Yaakov, “Feed me, I pray you, with that same red stew; for I am faint.” Therefore was his name called Edom.
25:31And Yaakov said, “Sell me this day your birthright.”
25:32And Esav said, “Behold, I am at the point to die; and what profit shall this birthright do to me?”
25:33And Yaakov said, “Swear to me this day”; and he swore unto him; and he sold his birthright unto Yaakov.
25:34Then Yaakov gave Esav bread and stew of lentils; and he ate and drank, and rose up, and went his way. Thus Esav despised his birthright.
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the Hebrew shows the written form, the reading follows in small type, and a note under the verse gives both. The English follows the reading. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Genesis they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 31 and 32; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
