Genesis, Chapter 24

Avraham sends his servant to his kindred for a wife for Yitzḥak; at the well in the city of Naḥor Rivkah waters his camels, the servant tells his errand to Lavan and Betu’el, Rivkah agrees to go, and Yitzḥak takes her as his wife.

Avraham’s charge to his servant

24:1And Avraham (Abraham) was old, advanced in age; and Hashem had blessed Avraham in all things.

24:2And Avraham said unto his servant, the elder of his house, who ruled over all that he had, “Put, I pray you, your hand under my thigh;

24:3and I will make you swear by Hashem, the God of heaven and the God of the earth, that you shall not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Kena’ani (Canaanites), among whom I dwell;

24:4but you shall go unto my country, and to my kindred, and take a wife for my son Yitzḥak (Isaac).”

24:5And the servant said unto him, “Perhaps the woman will not be willing to follow me unto this land; must I then bring your son back unto the land from which you came?”

24:6And Avraham said unto him, “Beware that you do not bring my son back there.

24:7Hashem, the God of heaven, who took me from my father’s house, and from the land of my kindred, and who spoke unto me, and who swore unto me, saying, ‘Unto your seed will I give this land’—He shall send His angel before you, and you shall take a wife for my son from there.

24:8And if the woman will not be willing to follow you, then you shall be clear from this my oath; only do not bring my son back there.”

24:9And the servant put his hand under the thigh of Avraham his master, and swore to him concerning that matter.

Rivkah at the well

24:10And the servant took ten camels of the camels of his master, and departed, with all the goods of his master in his hand; and he arose, and went to Aram-Naharayim (Mesopotamia), unto the city of Naḥor (Nahor).

24:11And he made his camels kneel down outside the city by the well of water at the time of evening, the time that women go out to draw water.

24:12And he said, “O Hashem, God of my master Avraham, I pray You, send me good success this day, and show kindness unto my master Avraham.

24:13Behold, I stand here by the spring of water; and the daughters of the men of the city come out to draw water.

24:14And let it come to pass, that the maiden to whom I shall say, ‘Let down your pitcher, I pray you, that I may drink,’ and she shall say, ‘Drink, and I will give your camels drink also,’ let her be the one You have appointed for Your servant Yitzḥak; and by this shall I know that You have shown kindness unto my master.”

24:15And it came to pass, before he had finished speaking, that behold, Rivkah (Rebekah) came out, who was born to Betu’el (Bethuel), son of Milkah (Milcah), the wife of Naḥor, Avraham’s brother, with her pitcher upon her shoulder.

24:16And the maiden was very beautiful to look upon, a virgin, and no man had known her; and she went down to the spring, and filled her pitcher, and came up.

24:17And the servant ran to meet her, and said, “Let me, I pray you, drink a little water from your pitcher.”

24:18And she said, “Drink, my lord”; and she hurried, and let down her pitcher upon her hand, and gave him drink.

24:19And when she had finished giving him drink, she said, “I will draw water for your camels also, until they have finished drinking.”

24:20And she hurried, and emptied her pitcher into the trough, and ran again unto the well to draw, and drew for all his camels.

24:21And the man, wondering at her, held his peace, to know whether Hashem had made his journey prosperous or not.

24:22And it came to pass, as the camels had finished drinking, that the man took a golden nose ring of half a shekel in weight, and two bracelets for her hands of ten shekels’ weight of gold;

24:26And the man bowed his head, and worshipped Hashem.

24:27And he said, “Blessed be Hashem, God of my master Avraham, who has not forsaken His kindness and His truth toward my master; as for me, being on the way, Hashem led me to the house of my master’s brothers.”

Lavan welcomes the servant

24:28And the maiden ran, and told her mother’s house about these things.

24:29And Rivkah had a brother, and his name was Lavan (Laban); and Lavan ran out unto the man, unto the spring.

24:30And it came to pass, when he saw the nose ring, and the bracelets upon his sister’s hands, and when he heard the words of Rivkah his sister, saying, “Thus the man spoke unto me,” that he came unto the man; and behold, he stood by the camels at the spring.

24:31And he said, “Come in, you blessed of Hashem; why do you stand outside? For I have prepared the house, and room for the camels.”

24:32And the man came into the house; and he unloaded the camels, and gave straw and fodder for the camels, and water to wash his feet, and the feet of the men who were with him.

24:59And they sent away Rivkah their sister, and her nurse, and Avraham’s servant, and his men.

24:60And they blessed Rivkah, and said unto her, “Our sister, may you become thousands of ten thousands, and may your seed possess the gate of those who hate them.”

24:61And Rivkah arose, and her maidens, and they rode upon the camels, and followed the man; and the servant took Rivkah, and went his way.

Yitzḥak meets Rivkah

24:62And Yitzḥak came from going to Be’er-Laḥai-Ro’i (Beer-lahai-roi); for he dwelt in the land of the Negev (the south).

24:63And Yitzḥak went out to meditate in the field toward evening; and he lifted up his eyes, and saw, and behold, camels were coming.

24:64And Rivkah lifted up her eyes, and when she saw Yitzḥak, she alighted from the camel.

24:65And she said unto the servant, “Who is this man who walks in the field to meet us?” And the servant said, “It is my master.” Therefore she took her veil, and covered herself.

24:66And the servant told Yitzḥak all the things that he had done.

24:67And Yitzḥak brought her into the tent of Sarah his mother, and took Rivkah, and she became his wife; and he loved her. And Yitzḥak was comforted after his mother.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the Hebrew shows the written form, the reading follows in small type, and a note under the verse gives both. The English follows the reading. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Genesis they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 31 and 32; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
