Text (469) 608-9944Genesis, Chapter 16
The barren Sarai gives her Mitzrit maid Hagar to Avram; Hagar conceives and despises her mistress, flees from Sarai’s harshness, and is met by the angel of Hashem in the wilderness, and she bears Avram a son, Yishma’el.
16:1Now Sarai, Avram’s wife, bore him no children; and she had a handmaid, a Mitzrit (Egyptian), whose name was Hagar.
16:2And Sarai said unto Avram (Abram), “Behold now, Hashem has restrained me from bearing. I pray you, go in unto my maid; it may be that I may obtain children by her.” And Avram listened to the voice of Sarai.
16:3And Sarai, Avram’s wife, took Hagar her maid, the Mitzrit, after Avram had dwelt ten years in the land of Kena’an (Canaan), and gave her to her husband Avram to be his wife.
16:4And he went in unto Hagar, and she conceived; and when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes.
16:5And Sarai said unto Avram, “My wrong be upon you. I have given my maid into your bosom; and when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes. Hashem judge between me and you.”
16:6But Avram said unto Sarai, “Behold, your maid is in your hand; do to her as it pleases you.” And when Sarai dealt harshly with her, she fled from her face.
16:7And the angel of Hashem found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain on the way to Shur.
16:8And he said, “Hagar, Sarai’s maid, where have you come from? And where will you go?” And she said, “I flee from the face of my mistress Sarai.”
16:9And the angel of Hashem said unto her, “Return to your mistress, and submit yourself under her hands.”
16:10And the angel of Hashem said unto her, “I will multiply your seed exceedingly, that it shall not be numbered for multitude.”
16:11And the angel of Hashem said unto her, “Behold, you are with child, and shall bear a son, and shall call his name Yishma’el (Ishmael), because Hashem has heard your affliction.
16:12And he will be a wild man; his hand will be against every man, and every man’s hand against him; and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brothers.”
16:13And she called the name of Hashem who spoke unto her, “You are El Ro’i (the God who sees me)”; for she said, “Have I also here looked after Him who sees me?”
16:14Therefore the well was called Be’er-Laḥai-Ro’i (Beer-lahai-roi); behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.
16:15And Hagar bore Avram a son; and Avram called the name of his son, whom Hagar bore, Yishma’el.
16:16And Avram was eighty and six years old when Hagar bore Yishma’el to Avram.
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Genesis they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 31 and 32; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
