Text (469) 608-9944Exodus, Chapter 9
A grievous pestilence kills the cattle of Mitzrayim but not those of Yisrael; ashes of the furnace become boils on man and beast; Moshe warns of hail, which strikes all the land except Goshen; Par’oh confesses that he has sinned, but when the hail ceases he hardens his heart again.
9:1Then Hashem said unto Moshe (Moses), “Go in unto Par’oh (Pharaoh), and tell him, Thus says Hashem, the God of the Hebrews: Let My people go, that they may serve Me.
9:2For if you refuse to let them go, and will hold them still,
9:3behold, the hand of Hashem is upon your cattle which are in the field, upon the horses, upon the donkeys, upon the camels, upon the oxen, and upon the sheep: there shall be a very grievous pestilence.
9:4And Hashem shall sever between the cattle of Yisrael (Israel) and the cattle of Mitzrayim (Egypt); and there shall nothing die of all that is the children’s of Yisrael.”
9:5And Hashem appointed a set time, saying, “Tomorrow Hashem shall do this thing in the land.”
9:6And Hashem did that thing on the next day, and all the cattle of Mitzrayim died; but of the cattle of the children of Yisrael died not one.
9:7And Par’oh sent, and behold, there was not one of the cattle of the Israelites dead. And the heart of Par’oh was hardened, and he did not let the people go.
9:8And Hashem said unto Moshe and unto Aharon (Aaron), “Take to yourselves handfuls of ashes of the furnace, and let Moshe sprinkle it toward the heaven in the sight of Par’oh.
9:9And it shall become small dust over all the land of Mitzrayim, and shall be a boil breaking forth with blisters upon man, and upon beast, throughout all the land of Mitzrayim.”
9:10And they took ashes of the furnace, and stood before Par’oh; and Moshe sprinkled it up toward heaven; and it became a boil breaking forth with blisters upon man, and upon beast.
9:11And the magicians could not stand before Moshe because of the boils; for the boil was upon the magicians, and upon all the Egyptians.
9:12And Hashem hardened the heart of Par’oh, and he did not hearken unto them; as Hashem had spoken unto Moshe.
9:13And Hashem said unto Moshe, “Rise up early in the morning, and stand before Par’oh, and say unto him, Thus says Hashem, the God of the Hebrews: Let My people go, that they may serve Me.
9:14For I will at this time send all My plagues upon your heart, and upon your servants, and upon your people; that you may know that there is none like Me in all the earth.
9:15For now I will stretch out My hand, that I may strike you and your people with pestilence; and you shall be cut off from the earth.
9:16And in very deed for this cause have I raised you up, to show in you My power; and that My name may be declared throughout all the earth.
9:17As yet do you exalt yourself against My people, that you will not let them go?
9:18Behold, tomorrow about this time I will cause it to rain a very grievous hail, such as has not been in Mitzrayim since the foundation thereof even until now.
9:19Send therefore now, and gather your cattle, and all that you have in the field; for upon every man and beast which shall be found in the field, and shall not be brought home, the hail shall come down upon them, and they shall die.”
9:20He who feared the word of Hashem among the servants of Par’oh made his servants and his cattle flee into the houses;
9:21and he who did not regard the word of Hashem left his servants and his cattle in the field.
9:22And Hashem said unto Moshe, “Stretch forth your hand toward heaven, that there may be hail in all the land of Mitzrayim, upon man, and upon beast, and upon every herb of the field, throughout the land of Mitzrayim.”
9:23And Moshe stretched forth his rod toward heaven; and Hashem sent thunder and hail, and fire ran along upon the ground; and Hashem rained hail upon the land of Mitzrayim.
9:24So there was hail, and fire mingled with the hail, very grievous, such as there was none like it in all the land of Mitzrayim since it became a nation.
9:25And the hail struck throughout all the land of Mitzrayim all that was in the field, both man and beast; and the hail struck every herb of the field, and broke every tree of the field.
9:26Only in the land of Goshen, where the children of Yisrael were, was there no hail.
9:27And Par’oh sent, and called for Moshe and Aharon, and said unto them, “I have sinned this time; Hashem is righteous, and I and my people are wicked.
9:28Entreat Hashem (for it is enough) that there be no more mighty thunderings and hail; and I will let you go, and you shall stay no longer.”
9:29And Moshe said unto him, “As soon as I have gone out of the city, I will spread abroad my hands unto Hashem; and the thunder shall cease, neither shall there be any more hail; that you may know how that the earth is Hashem’s.
9:30But as for you and your servants, I know that you will not yet fear Hashem God.”
9:31And the flax and the barley were struck; for the barley was in the ear, and the flax was in bloom.
9:32But the wheat and the rye were not struck; for they were not grown up.
9:33And Moshe went out of the city from Par’oh, and spread abroad his hands unto Hashem; and the thunders and hail ceased, and the rain was not poured upon the earth.
9:34And when Par’oh saw that the rain and the hail and the thunders had ceased, he sinned yet more, and hardened his heart, he and his servants.
9:35And the heart of Par’oh was hardened, neither would he let the children of Yisrael go; as Hashem had spoken by Moshe.
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Exodus they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 7, 8, 20, 21 and 22; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
