Exodus, Chapter 10

Moshe and Aharon warn Par’oh of locusts, and at his servants’ urging he offers to let only the men go; the locusts eat all that the hail had left, three days of darkness fall on Mitzrayim, and Par’oh drives Moshe away, forbidding him to see his face again.

The warning of locusts

10:1And Hashem said unto Moshe (Moses), “Go in unto Par’oh (Pharaoh); for I have hardened his heart, and the heart of his servants, that I might show these My signs before him;

10:2and that you may tell in the ears of your son, and of your son’s son, what things I have wrought in Mitzrayim (Egypt), and My signs which I have done among them; that you may know that I am Hashem.”

10:3And Moshe and Aharon (Aaron) came in unto Par’oh, and said unto him, “Thus says Hashem, the God of the Hebrews: How long will you refuse to humble yourself before Me? Let My people go, that they may serve Me.

10:4Or else, if you refuse to let My people go, behold, tomorrow I will bring the locusts into your borders;

10:5and they shall cover the face of the earth, that one cannot be able to see the earth; and they shall eat the residue of that which has escaped, which remains unto you from the hail, and shall eat every tree which grows for you out of the field;

10:6and they shall fill your houses, and the houses of all your servants, and the houses of all the Egyptians; which neither your fathers, nor your fathers’ fathers have seen, since the day that they were upon the earth unto this day.” And he turned himself, and went out from Par’oh.

Who shall go?

10:7And Par’oh’s servants said unto him, “How long shall this man be a snare unto us? Let the men go, that they may serve Hashem their God. Do you not yet know that Mitzrayim is destroyed?”

10:8And Moshe and Aharon were brought again unto Par’oh; and he said unto them, “Go, serve Hashem your God; but who are they that shall go?”

10:9And Moshe said, “We will go with our young and with our old, with our sons and with our daughters, with our flocks and with our herds we will go; for we must hold a feast unto Hashem.”

10:10And he said unto them, “Let Hashem be so with you, as I will let you go, and your little ones! Look to it; for evil is before you.

10:11Not so: go now, you that are men, and serve Hashem; for that you did desire.” And they were driven out from Par’oh’s presence.

The plague of locusts

10:12And Hashem said unto Moshe, “Stretch out your hand over the land of Mitzrayim for the locusts, that they may come up upon the land of Mitzrayim, and eat every herb of the land, even all that the hail has left.”

10:13And Moshe stretched forth his rod over the land of Mitzrayim, and Hashem brought an east wind upon the land all that day, and all that night; and when it was morning, the east wind brought the locusts.

10:14And the locusts went up over all the land of Mitzrayim, and rested in all the borders of Mitzrayim; very grievous were they; before them there were no such locusts as they, neither after them shall be such.

10:15For they covered the face of the whole earth, so that the land was darkened; and they ate every herb of the land, and all the fruit of the trees which the hail had left; and there remained not any green thing in the trees, or in the herbs of the field, through all the land of Mitzrayim.

10:16Then Par’oh called for Moshe and Aharon in haste; and he said, “I have sinned against Hashem your God, and against you.

10:17Now therefore forgive, I pray you, my sin only this once, and entreat Hashem your God, that He may take away from me this death only.”

10:18And he went out from Par’oh, and entreated Hashem.

10:19And Hashem turned a mighty strong west wind, which took away the locusts, and cast them into the Yam Suf (Red Sea); there remained not one locust in all the borders of Mitzrayim.

10:20But Hashem hardened Par’oh’s heart, so that he would not let the children of Yisrael (Israel) go.

The plague of darkness

10:21And Hashem said unto Moshe, “Stretch out your hand toward heaven, that there may be darkness over the land of Mitzrayim, even darkness which may be felt.”

10:22And Moshe stretched forth his hand toward heaven; and there was a thick darkness in all the land of Mitzrayim three days.

10:23They did not see one another, neither did any rise from his place for three days; but all the children of Yisrael had light in their dwellings.

See my face no more

10:24And Par’oh called unto Moshe, and said, “Go, serve Hashem; only let your flocks and your herds be stayed; let your little ones also go with you.”

10:25And Moshe said, “You must also give us sacrifices and burnt offerings, that we may sacrifice unto Hashem our God.

10:26Our cattle also shall go with us; there shall not a hoof be left behind; for of them must we take to serve Hashem our God; and we do not know with what we must serve Hashem, until we come there.”

10:27But Hashem hardened Par’oh’s heart, and he would not let them go.

10:28And Par’oh said unto him, “Get away from me; take heed to yourself, see my face no more; for in the day you see my face you shall die.”

10:29And Moshe said, “You have spoken well; I will see your face again no more.”

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Exodus they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 7, 8, 20, 21 and 22; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
