Exodus, Chapter 8

Frogs cover Mitzrayim until Par’oh asks Moshe to entreat Hashem, then he hardens his heart; the dust becomes lice, which the magicians call the finger of God; swarms of flies fill the land but spare Goshen, and Par’oh promises to let the people go, then refuses again.

Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. Verses 1–28 here are 8:5–32 in most English Bibles. Verses 8:1–4 of most English Bibles are 7:26–29 here.

The plague of frogs

8:1And Hashem said unto Moshe (Moses), “Say unto Aharon (Aaron), Stretch forth your hand with your rod over the streams, over the rivers, and over the ponds, and cause frogs to come up upon the land of Mitzrayim (Egypt).”

8:2And Aharon stretched out his hand over the waters of Mitzrayim; and the frogs came up, and covered the land of Mitzrayim.

8:3And the magicians did so with their enchantments, and brought up frogs upon the land of Mitzrayim.

8:4Then Par’oh (Pharaoh) called for Moshe and Aharon, and said, “Entreat Hashem, that He may take away the frogs from me, and from my people; and I will let the people go, that they may sacrifice unto Hashem.”

8:5And Moshe said unto Par’oh, “Glory over me: when shall I entreat for you, and for your servants, and for your people, to destroy the frogs from you and your houses, that they may remain in the river only?”

8:6And he said, “Tomorrow.” And he said, “Be it according to your word, that you may know that there is none like unto Hashem our God.

8:7And the frogs shall depart from you, and from your houses, and from your servants, and from your people; they shall remain in the river only.”

8:8And Moshe and Aharon went out from Par’oh; and Moshe cried unto Hashem concerning the frogs which He had brought against Par’oh.

8:9And Hashem did according to the word of Moshe; and the frogs died out of the houses, out of the villages, and out of the fields.

8:10And they gathered them together upon heaps; and the land stank.

8:11But when Par’oh saw that there was respite, he hardened his heart, and did not hearken unto them; as Hashem had said.

The plague of lice

8:12And Hashem said unto Moshe, “Say unto Aharon, Stretch out your rod, and strike the dust of the land, that it may become lice throughout all the land of Mitzrayim.”

8:13And they did so; for Aharon stretched out his hand with his rod, and struck the dust of the earth, and it became lice in man, and in beast; all the dust of the land became lice throughout all the land of Mitzrayim.

8:14And the magicians did so with their enchantments to bring forth lice, but they could not; and there were lice upon man, and upon beast.

8:15Then the magicians said unto Par’oh, “This is the finger of God”; and Par’oh’s heart was hardened, and he did not hearken unto them; as Hashem had said.

The plague of flies

8:16And Hashem said unto Moshe, “Rise up early in the morning, and stand before Par’oh; behold, he comes forth to the water; and say unto him, Thus says Hashem: Let My people go, that they may serve Me.

8:17Or else, if you will not let My people go, behold, I will send swarms of flies upon you, and upon your servants, and upon your people, and into your houses; and the houses of the Egyptians shall be full of swarms of flies, and also the ground upon which they are.

8:18And I will sever in that day the land of Goshen, in which My people dwell, that no swarms of flies shall be there; to the end you may know that I am Hashem in the midst of the earth.

8:19And I will put a division between My people and your people; tomorrow shall this sign be.”

8:20And Hashem did so; and there came a grievous swarm of flies into the house of Par’oh, and into his servants’ houses, and into all the land of Mitzrayim; the land was corrupted by reason of the swarm of flies.

Par’oh bargains with Moshe

8:21And Par’oh called for Moshe and for Aharon, and said, “Go, sacrifice to your God in the land.”

8:22And Moshe said, “It is not right to do so; for we shall sacrifice the abomination of the Egyptians to Hashem our God; behold, shall we sacrifice the abomination of the Egyptians before their eyes, and will they not stone us?

8:23We will go three days’ journey into the wilderness, and sacrifice to Hashem our God, as He shall command us.”

8:24And Par’oh said, “I will let you go, that you may sacrifice to Hashem your God in the wilderness; only you shall not go very far away; entreat for me.”

8:25And Moshe said, “Behold, I go out from you, and I will entreat Hashem that the swarms of flies may depart from Par’oh, from his servants, and from his people, tomorrow; but let not Par’oh deal deceitfully any more in not letting the people go to sacrifice to Hashem.”

8:26And Moshe went out from Par’oh, and entreated Hashem.

8:27And Hashem did according to the word of Moshe; and He removed the swarms of flies from Par’oh, from his servants, and from his people; there remained not one.

8:28And Par’oh hardened his heart at this time also, neither would he let the people go.

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Exodus they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 7, 8, 20, 21 and 22; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
