Matthew, Chapter 11
From prison Yoḥanan sends his disciples to ask whether Yeshua is He that should come, and Yeshua speaks to the multitudes about Yoḥanan. He upbraids Korazin, Beit Tzaidah and Kefar Naḥum for not repenting, thanks the Father, and calls all who labour to come to Him for rest.
11:1And it came to pass, when Yeshua (Jesus) had made an end of commanding His twelve disciples, He departed thence to teach and to preach in their cities.
11:2Now when Yoḥanan (John) had heard in the prison the works of Messiah, he sent two of his disciples,
11:3And said unto Him, “Are You He that should come, or do we look for another?”
εἶπεν αὐτῷ, Σὺ εἶ ὁ ἐρχόμενος, ἢ ἕτερον προσδοκῶμεν;
11:4Yeshua answered and said unto them, “Go and show Yoḥanan again those things which you do hear and see:
11:5The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them.
11:6And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in Me.”
11:7And as they departed, Yeshua began to say unto the multitudes concerning Yoḥanan, “What went you out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind?
τούτων δὲ πορευομένων ἤρξατο ὁ Ἰησοῦς λέγειν τοῖς ὄχλοις περὶ Ἰωάννου, Τί ἐξήλθετε εἰς τὴν ἔρημον θεάσασθαι; κάλαμον ὑπὸ ἀνέμου σαλευόμενον;
11:8But what went you out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? behold, they that wear soft clothing are in kings’ houses.
11:9But what went you out for to see? A prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet.
11:10For this is he, of whom it is written, ‘Behold, I send My messenger before your face, which shall prepare your way before you.’
11:11Truly I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there has not risen a greater than Yoḥanan the Immerser (John the Baptist): notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
11:12And from the days of Yoḥanan the Immerser until now the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force.
11:13For all the prophets and the Torah prophesied until Yoḥanan.
11:14And if you will receive it, this is Eliyahu (Elias), which was for to come.
11:15He that has ears to hear, let him hear.
11:16But whereunto shall I liken this generation? It is like unto children sitting in the markets, and calling unto their fellows,
11:17And saying, ‘We have piped unto you, and you have not danced; we have mourned unto you, and you have not lamented.’
11:18For Yoḥanan came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.’
11:19The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners.’ But wisdom is justified of her children.”
11:20Then began He to upbraid the cities wherein most of His mighty works were done, because they repented not:
11:21“Woe unto you, Korazin (Chorazin)! woe unto you, Beit Tzaidah (Bethsaida)! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tzor (Tyre) and Tzidon (Sidon), they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.
11:22But I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Tzor and Tzidon at the day of judgment, than for you.
11:23And you, Kefar Naḥum (Capernaum), which are exalted unto heaven, shall be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in you, had been done in Sedom (Sodom), it would have remained until this day.
11:24But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sedom in the day of judgment, than for you.”
11:25At that time Yeshua answered and said, “I thank You, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because You have hid these things from the wise and prudent, and have revealed them unto babes.
11:26Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in Your sight.
11:27All things are delivered unto Me of My Father: and no man knows the Son, but the Father; neither knows any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal Him.
11:28Come unto Me, all you that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
11:29Take My yoke upon you, and learn of Me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and you shall find rest unto your souls.
11:30For My yoke is easy, and My burden is light.”

Sources & method
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places with Hebrew names carry them, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yeshua (Jesus)); Greek and Roman names keep their English form. Christ is “Messiah”; Lord, used of Yeshua, is “Master”; where the Greek has Kyrios for God, the English keeps “the Lord.” “Church” is “congregation,” “baptize” is “immerse,” and the Holy Ghost is “the Holy Spirit.”
