Jeremiah, Chapter 6

The children of Binyamin are warned to flee as a people from the north besieges Yerushalayim; from the prophet to the priest every one deals falsely, crying peace when there is no peace, the people refuse the old paths and will not hearken, and Yirmeyahu is set to try them and finds them reprobate silver.

6:1O you children of Binyamin (Benjamin), gather yourselves to flee out of the midst of Yerushalayim (Jerusalem), and blow the shofar (trumpet) in Tekoa, and set up a sign of fire in Beit HaKerem (Beth-haccerem): for evil appears out of the north, and great destruction.

6:2I have likened the daughter of Tziyon (Zion) to a comely and delicate woman.

6:3The shepherds with their flocks shall come unto her; they shall pitch their tents against her round about; they shall feed every one in his place.

6:4Prepare you war against her; arise, and let us go up at noon. Woe unto us! for the day goes away, for the shadows of the evening are stretched out.

6:5Arise, and let us go by night, and let us destroy her palaces.

Cast a mount against Yerushalayim

6:6For thus has Hashem of hosts said, “Hew you down trees, and cast a mount against Yerushalayim: this is the city to be visited; she is wholly oppression in the midst of her.

6:7As a fountain casts out her waters, so she casts out her wickedness: violence and spoil is heard in her; before Me continually is grief and wounds.

6:8Be you instructed, O Yerushalayim, lest My soul depart from you; lest I make you desolate, a land not inhabited.”

6:9Thus says Hashem of hosts, “They shall throughly glean the remnant of Israel as a vine: turn back your hand as a grapegatherer into the baskets.”

Full of the fury of Hashem

6:10To whom shall I speak, and give warning, that they may hear? behold, their ear is uncircumcised, and they cannot hearken: behold, the word of Hashem is unto them a reproach; they have no delight in it.

6:11Therefore I am full of the fury of Hashem; I am weary with holding in: I will pour it out upon the children abroad, and upon the assembly of young men together: for even the husband with the wife shall be taken, the aged with him that is full of days.

6:12And their houses shall be turned unto others, with their fields and wives together: for I will stretch out My hand upon the inhabitants of the land, says Hashem.

6:13For from the least of them even unto the greatest of them every one is given to covetousness; and from the prophet even unto the priest every one deals falsely.

6:14They have healed also the hurt of the daughter of My people slightly, saying, “Peace, peace”; when there is no peace.

6:15Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? nay, they were not at all ashamed, neither could they blush: therefore they shall fall among them that fall: at the time that I visit them they shall be cast down, says Hashem.

Ask for the old paths

6:16Thus says Hashem, “Stand you in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and you shall find rest for your souls. But they said, ‘We will not walk therein.’

6:17Also I set watchmen over you, saying, ‘Hearken to the sound of the shofar.’ But they said, ‘We will not hearken.’

6:18Therefore hear, you nations, and know, O congregation, what is among them.

6:19Hear, O earth: behold, I will bring evil upon this people, even the fruit of their thoughts, because they have not hearkened unto My words, nor to My Torah, but rejected it.

6:20To what purpose comes there to Me incense from Sheva (Sheba), and the sweet cane from a far country? your burnt offerings are not acceptable, nor your sacrifices sweet unto Me.”

6:21Therefore thus says Hashem, “Behold, I will lay stumblingblocks before this people, and the fathers and the sons together shall fall upon them; the neighbour and his friend shall perish.”

A people from the north

6:22Thus says Hashem, “Behold, a people comes from the north country, and a great nation shall be raised from the sides of the earth.

6:23They shall lay hold on bow and spear; they are cruel, and have no mercy; their voice roars like the sea; and they ride upon horses, set in array as men for war against you, O daughter of Tziyon.”

6:24We have heard the fame thereof: our hands wax feeble: anguish has taken hold of us, and pain, as of a woman in travail.

6:25Go not forth into the field, nor walk by the way; for the sword of the enemy and fear is on every side.

6:26O daughter of my people, gird you with sackcloth, and wallow yourself in ashes: make you mourning, as for an only son, most bitter lamentation: for the spoiler shall suddenly come upon us.

Reprobate silver

6:27I have set you for a tower and a fortress among My people, that you may know and try their way.

6:28They are all grievous revolters, walking with slanders: they are bronze and iron; they are all corrupters.

6:29The bellows are burned, the lead is consumed of the fire; the founder melts in vain: for the wicked are not plucked away.

6:30Reprobate silver shall men call them, because Hashem has rejected them.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Jeremiah they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 8 and 9; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
