Malachi, Chapter 3

Hashem will send His messenger, and the Lord shall come to His temple to purify the sons of Levi; the people are called to return and bring the tithes; a book of remembrance is written for those who fear Hashem; the day burns as an oven, and Eliyah the prophet is sent before the great and dreadful day of Hashem.

Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. Verses 19–24 here are 4:1–6 in most English Bibles.

My messenger

3:1Behold, I will send My messenger, and he shall prepare the way before Me: and the Lord, whom you seek, shall suddenly come to His temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom you delight in: behold, He shall come, says Hashem of hosts.

3:2But who may abide the day of His coming? and who shall stand when He appears? for He is like a refiner’s fire, and like fullers’ soap:

3:3And He shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and He shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto Hashem an offering in righteousness.

3:4Then shall the offering of Yehudah (Judah) and Yerushalayim (Jerusalem) be pleasant unto Hashem, as in the days of old, and as in former years.

3:5And I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against false swearers, and against those that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the stranger from his right, and fear not Me, says Hashem of hosts.

Return unto Me

3:6For I am Hashem, I change not; therefore you sons of Ya’akov (Jacob) are not consumed.

3:7Even from the days of your fathers you are gone away from My ordinances, and have not kept them. Return unto Me, and I will return unto you, says Hashem of hosts. But you said, “Wherein shall we return?”

3:8Will a man rob God? Yet you have robbed Me. But you say, “Wherein have we robbed You?” In tithes and offerings.

3:9You are cursed with a curse: for you have robbed Me, even this whole nation.

3:10Bring you all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be food in My house, and prove Me now herewith, says Hashem of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.

3:11And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, says Hashem of hosts.

3:12And all nations shall call you blessed: for you shall be a delightsome land, says Hashem of hosts.

A book of remembrance

3:13Your words have been stout against Me, says Hashem. Yet you say, “What have we spoken so much against You?”

3:14You have said, “It is vain to serve God: and what profit is it that we have kept His ordinance, and that we have walked mournfully before Hashem of hosts?

3:15And now we call the proud happy; yea, they that work wickedness are set up; yea, they that tempt God are even delivered.”

3:16Then they that feared Hashem spoke often one to another: and Hashem hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before Him for them that feared Hashem, and that thought upon His name.

3:17And they shall be Mine, says Hashem of hosts, in that day when I make up My jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spares his own son that serves him.

3:18Then shall you return, and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serves God and him that serves Him not.

The day that burns as an oven

3:19For, behold, the day comes, that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble: and the day that comes shall burn them up, says Hashem of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch.

3:20But unto you that fear My name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and you shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall.

3:21And you shall tread down the wicked; for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet in the day that I shall do this, says Hashem of hosts.

Remember the Torah of Moshe

3:22Remember you the Torah of Moshe (Moses) My servant, which I commanded unto him in Chorev (Horeb) for all Israel, with the statutes and judgments.

3:23Behold, I will send you Eliyah (Elijah) the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of Hashem:

3:24And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the earth with a curse.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Malachi they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapter 3; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
