Mark, Chapter 1

Yoḥanan the Immerser prepares the way in the wilderness and immerses Yeshua in the Yarden, and Yeshua is tempted forty days. He preaches in Galil, calls Shim’on, Andrew, Ya’akov and Yoḥanan, casts out an unclean spirit in Kefar Naḥum, heals many, and cleanses a leper.

1:1The beginning of the gospel of Yeshua (Jesus) the Messiah, the Son of God;

Yoḥanan prepares the way

1:2As it is written in the prophets, “Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, which shall prepare Your way before You.

Tenakh. Quotes Malachi 3:1.

1:3The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare the way of the Lord, make His paths straight.”

Tenakh. Quotes Isaiah 40:3.

1:4Yoḥanan (John) did immerse in the wilderness, and preach the immersion of repentance for the remission of sins.

1:5And there went out unto him all the land of Yehudah (Judaea), and they of Yerushalayim (Jerusalem), and were all immersed of him in the river of Yarden (Jordan), confessing their sins.

1:6And Yoḥanan was clothed with camel’s hair, and with a girdle of a skin about his loins; and he did eat locusts and wild honey;

1:7And preached, saying, “There comes One mightier than I after me, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and unloose.

1:8I indeed have immersed you with water: but He shall immerse you with the Holy Spirit.”

Yeshua is immersed and tempted

1:9And it came to pass in those days, that Yeshua came from Natzrat (Nazareth) of Galil (Galilee), and was immersed of Yoḥanan in Yarden.

1:10And straightway coming up out of the water, He saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon Him:

1:11And there came a voice from heaven, saying, “You are My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”

1:12And immediately the Spirit drives Him into the wilderness.

1:13And He was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted of Satan; and was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered unto Him.

Yeshua preaches and calls disciples

1:14Now after that Yoḥanan was put in prison, Yeshua came into Galil, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God,

1:15And saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent, and believe the gospel.”

1:16Now as He walked by the sea of Galil, He saw Shim’on (Simon) and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.

1:17And Yeshua said unto them, “Come after Me, and I will make you to become fishers of men.”

1:18And straightway they forsook their nets, and followed Him.

1:19And when He had gone a little farther thence, He saw Ya’akov (James) the son of Zavdai (Zebedee), and Yoḥanan his brother, who also were in the ship mending their nets.

1:20And straightway He called them: and they left their father Zavdai in the ship with the hired servants, and went after Him.

An unclean spirit cast out

1:21And they went into Kefar Naḥum (Capernaum); and straightway on the sabbath day He entered into the synagogue, and taught.

1:22And they were astonished at His doctrine: for He taught them as one that had authority, and not as the scribes.

1:23And there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit; and he cried out,

1:24Saying, “Let us alone; what have we to do with You, You Yeshua of Natzrat? are You come to destroy us? I know You who You are, the Holy One of God.”

1:25And Yeshua rebuked him, saying, “Hold your peace, and come out of him.”

1:26And when the unclean spirit had torn him, and cried with a loud voice, he came out of him.

1:27And they were all amazed, insomuch that they questioned among themselves, saying, “What thing is this? what new doctrine is this? for with authority commands He even the unclean spirits, and they do obey Him.”

1:28And immediately His fame spread abroad throughout all the region round about Galil.

Many are healed

1:29And forthwith, when they were come out of the synagogue, they entered into the house of Shim’on and Andrew, with Ya’akov and Yoḥanan.

1:30But Shim’on’s wife’s mother lay sick of a fever, and anon they tell Him of her.

1:31And He came and took her by the hand, and lifted her up; and immediately the fever left her, and she ministered unto them.

1:32And at even, when the sun did set, they brought unto Him all that were diseased, and them that were possessed with demons.

1:33And all the city was gathered together at the door.

1:34And He healed many that were sick of divers diseases, and cast out many demons; and permitted not the demons to speak, because they knew Him.

1:35And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, He went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed.

1:36And Shim’on and they that were with him followed after Him.

1:37And when they had found Him, they said unto Him, “All men seek for You.”

1:38And He said unto them, “Let us go into the next towns, that I may preach there also: for therefore came I forth.”

1:39And He preached in their synagogues throughout all Galil, and cast out demons.

Yeshua cleanses a leper

1:40And there came a leper to Him, beseeching Him, and kneeling down to Him, and saying unto Him, “If You will, You can make me clean.”

1:41And Yeshua, moved with compassion, put forth His hand, and touched him, and says unto him, “I will; be clean.”

1:42And as soon as He had spoken, immediately the leprosy departed from him, and he was cleansed.

1:43And He straitly charged him, and forthwith sent him away;

1:44And says unto him, “See you say nothing to any man: but go your way, show yourself to the priest, and offer for your cleansing those things which Moshe (Moses) commanded, for a testimony unto them.”

1:45But he went out, and began to publish it much, and to blaze abroad the matter, insomuch that Yeshua could no more openly enter into the city, but was without in desert places: and they came to Him from every quarter.

English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places with Hebrew names carry them, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yeshua (Jesus)); Greek and Roman names keep their English form. Christ is “Messiah”; Lord, used of Yeshua, is “Master”; where the Greek has Kyrios for God, the English keeps “the Lord.” “Church” is “congregation,” “baptize” is “immerse,” and the Holy Ghost is “the Holy Spirit.”
