John, Chapter 4
On His way to Galil, Yeshua speaks with a woman of Shomron at Ya’akov’s well about living water and true worship, and tells her that He is the Messiah; many Samaritans of her city believe on Him. In Kanah He heals a nobleman’s son who lies sick at Kefar Naḥum.
4:1When therefore the Master knew how the Pharisees had heard that Yeshua (Jesus) made and immersed more disciples than Yoḥanan (John),
4:2(Though Yeshua Himself immersed not, but His disciples,)

4:3He left Yehudah (Judaea), and departed again into Galil (Galilee).
4:4And He must needs go through Shomron (Samaria).
4:5Then comes He to a city of Shomron, which is called Suchar (Sychar), near to the parcel of ground that Ya’akov (Jacob) gave to his son Yosef (Joseph).
4:6Now Ya’akov’s well was there. Yeshua therefore, being wearied with His journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour.

4:7There comes a woman of Shomron to draw water: Yeshua says unto her, “Give Me to drink.”
4:8(For His disciples were gone away unto the city to buy food.)

4:9Then says the woman of Shomron unto Him, “How is it that You, being a Jew, ask drink of me, which am a woman of Shomron?” for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans.
4:10Yeshua answered and said unto her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that says to you, ‘Give Me to drink’; you would have asked of Him, and He would have given you living water.”
4:11The woman says unto Him, “Sir, You have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then have You that living water?
λέγει αὐτῷ ἡ γυνή, Κύριε, οὔτε ἄντλημα ἔχεις, καὶ τὸ φρέαρ ἐστὶ βαθύ· πόθεν οὖν ἔχεις τὸ ὕδωρ τὸ ζῶν;
4:12Are You greater than our father Ya’akov, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle?”
μὴ σὺ μείζων εἶ τοῦ πατρὸς ἡμῶν Ἰακώβ, ὃς ἔδωκεν ἡμῖν τὸ φρέαρ, καὶ αὐτὸς ἐξ αὐτοῦ ἔπιε, καὶ οἱ υἱοὶ αὐτοῦ, καὶ τὰ θρέμματα αὐτοῦ;
4:13Yeshua answered and said unto her, “Whoever drinks of this water shall thirst again:
4:14But whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.”
4:15The woman says unto Him, “Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw.”
4:16Yeshua says unto her, “Go, call your husband, and come hither.”
4:17The woman answered and said, “I have no husband.” Yeshua said unto her, “You have well said, ‘I have no husband’:
4:18For you have had five husbands; and he whom you now have is not your husband: in that said you truly.”
4:19The woman says unto Him, “Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet.
4:20Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and you say, that in Yerushalayim (Jerusalem) is the place where men ought to worship.”
4:21Yeshua says unto her, “Woman, believe Me, the hour comes, when you shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Yerushalayim, worship the Father.
4:22You worship you know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.

4:25The woman says unto Him, “I know that Mashiach (Messias) comes, which is called Messiah: when He is come, He will tell us all things.”
4:26Yeshua says unto her, “I that speak unto you am He.”
4:27And upon this came His disciples, and marvelled that He talked with the woman: yet no man said, “What seek You?” or, “Why talk You with her?”
Καὶ ἐπὶ τούτῳ ἦλθον οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐθαύμασαν ὅτι μετὰ γυναικὸς ἐλάλει· οὐδεὶς μέντοι εἶπε, Τί ζητεῖς; ἤ, Τί λαλεῖς μετ’ αὐτῆς;
4:28The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and says to the men,
4:29“Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Messiah?”
Δεῦτε, ἴδετε ἄνθρωπον, ὃς εἶπέ μοι πάντα ὅσα ἐποίησα· μήτι οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ Χριστός;
4:30Then they went out of the city, and came unto Him.
4:31In the mean while His disciples prayed Him, saying, “Rabbi, eat.”
4:32But He said unto them, “I have food to eat that you know not of.”
4:33Therefore said the disciples one to another, “Has any man brought Him ought to eat?”
ἔλεγον οὖν οἱ μαθηταὶ πρὸς ἀλλήλους, Μήτις ἤνεγκεν αὐτῷ φαγεῖν;
4:34Yeshua says unto them, “My food is to do the will of Him that sent Me, and to finish His work.
4:35Say not you, ‘There are yet four months, and then comes harvest’? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest.
4:36And he that reaps receives wages, and gathers fruit unto life eternal: that both he that sows and he that reaps may rejoice together.
4:37And herein is that saying true, ‘One sows, and another reaps.’
4:38I sent you to reap that whereon you bestowed no labour: other men laboured, and you are entered into their labours.”
4:39And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on Him for the saying of the woman, which testified, “He told me all that ever I did.”
4:40So when the Samaritans were come unto Him, they besought Him that He would tarry with them: and He abode there two days.
4:41And many more believed because of His own word;

4:42And said unto the woman, “Now we believe, not because of your saying: for we have heard Him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Messiah, the Saviour of the world.”
4:43Now after two days He departed thence, and went into Galil.
4:44For Yeshua Himself testified, that a prophet has no honour in his own country.
4:45Then when He was come into Galil, the Galileans received Him, having seen all the things that He did at Yerushalayim at the feast: for they also went unto the feast.
4:46So Yeshua came again into Kanah (Cana) of Galil, where He made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman, whose son was sick at Kefar Naḥum (Capernaum).
4:47When he heard that Yeshua was come out of Yehudah into Galil, he went unto Him, and besought Him that He would come down, and heal his son: for he was at the point of death.
4:48Then said Yeshua unto him, “Except you see signs and wonders, you will not believe.”
4:49The nobleman says unto Him, “Sir, come down ere my child die.”
4:50Yeshua says unto him, “Go your way; your son lives.” And the man believed the word that Yeshua had spoken unto him, and he went his way.
4:51And as he was now going down, his servants met him, and told him, saying, “Your son lives.”
4:52Then enquired he of them the hour when he began to amend. And they said unto him, “Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.”
4:53So the father knew that it was at the same hour, in the which Yeshua said unto him, “Your son lives”: and himself believed, and his whole house.
4:54This is again the second miracle that Yeshua did, when He was come out of Yehudah into Galil.

- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places with Hebrew names carry them, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yeshua (Jesus)); Greek and Roman names keep their English form. Christ is “Messiah”; Lord, used of Yeshua, is “Master”; where the Greek has Kyrios for God, the English keeps “the Lord.” “Church” is “congregation,” “baptize” is “immerse,” and the Holy Ghost is “the Holy Spirit.”
