John, Chapter 20

Miryam of Magdala finds the tomb empty, Peter and the other disciple see the grave clothes, and the risen Yeshua appears to Miryam. He appears to the disciples behind shut doors and gives them the Holy Spirit, and eight days later He shows Toma His hands and side.

The empty tomb

20:1The first day of the week comes Miryam of Magdala (Mary Magdalene) early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulchre, and sees the stone taken away from the sepulchre.

20:2Then she runs, and comes to Shim’on (Simon) Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Yeshua (Jesus) loved, and says unto them, “They have taken away the Master out of the sepulchre, and we know not where they have laid Him.”

20:3Peter therefore went forth, and that other disciple, and came to the sepulchre.

20:4So they ran both together: and the other disciple did outrun Peter, and came first to the sepulchre.

20:5And he stooping down, and looking in, saw the linen clothes lying; yet went he not in.

20:6Then comes Shim’on Peter following him, and went into the sepulchre, and sees the linen clothes lie,

20:7And the napkin, that was about His head, not lying with the linen clothes, but wrapped together in a place by itself.

20:8Then went in also that other disciple, which came first to the sepulchre, and he saw, and believed.

20:9For as yet they knew not the scripture, that He must rise again from the dead.

20:10Then the disciples went away again unto their own home.

Yeshua appears to Miryam

20:11But Miryam stood without at the sepulchre weeping: and as she wept, she stooped down, and looked into the sepulchre,

20:12And sees two angels in white sitting, the one at the head, and the other at the feet, where the body of Yeshua had lain.

20:13And they say unto her, “Woman, why do you weep?” She says unto them, “Because they have taken away my Master, and I know not where they have laid Him.”

20:14And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Yeshua standing, and knew not that it was Yeshua.

20:15Yeshua says unto her, “Woman, why do you weep? whom do you seek?” She, supposing Him to be the gardener, says unto Him, “Sir, if you have borne Him hence, tell me where you have laid Him, and I will take Him away.”

20:16Yeshua says unto her, “Miryam.” She turned herself, and says unto Him, “Rabboni;” which is to say, Teacher.

20:17Yeshua says unto her, “Touch Me not; for I am not yet ascended to My Father: but go to My brethren, and say unto them, ‘I ascend unto My Father, and your Father; and to My God, and your God.’”

20:18Miryam of Magdala came and told the disciples that she had seen the Master, and that He had spoken these things unto her.

Yeshua appears to the disciples

20:19Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Yeshua and stood in the midst, and says unto them, “Peace be unto you.”

20:20And when He had so said, He showed unto them His hands and His side. Then were the disciples glad, when they saw the Master.

20:21Then said Yeshua to them again, “Peace be unto you: as My Father has sent Me, even so send I you.”

20:22And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and says unto them, “Receive the Holy Spirit:

20:23Whose soever sins you remit, they are remitted unto them; and whose soever sins you retain, they are retained.”

Yeshua and Toma

20:24But Toma (Thomas), one of the Twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Yeshua came.

20:25The other disciples therefore said unto him, “We have seen the Master.” But he said unto them, “Except I shall see in His hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into His side, I will not believe.”

20:26And after eight days again His disciples were within, and Toma with them: then came Yeshua, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, “Peace be unto you.”

20:27Then says He to Toma, “Reach hither your finger, and behold My hands; and reach hither your hand, and thrust it into My side: and be not faithless, but believing.”

20:28And Toma answered and said unto Him, “My Master and my God.”

20:29Yeshua says unto him, “Toma, because you have seen Me, you have believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.”

The purpose of this book

20:30And many other signs truly did Yeshua in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book:

20:31But these are written, that you might believe that Yeshua is the Messiah, the Son of God; and that believing you might have life through His name.

English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places with Hebrew names carry them, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yeshua (Jesus)); Greek and Roman names keep their English form. Christ is “Messiah”; Lord, used of Yeshua, is “Master”; where the Greek has Kyrios for God, the English keeps “the Lord.” “Church” is “congregation,” “baptize” is “immerse,” and the Holy Ghost is “the Holy Spirit.”
