John, Chapter 18

Yehudah leads a band to the garden across the Kidron, and Yeshua is arrested and taken to Ḥanan and then to Kayafa, while Peter three times denies being His disciple. Before Pilate Yeshua speaks of a kingdom not of this world, and the crowd asks for Bar-Abba instead of Him.

18:1When Yeshua (Jesus) had spoken these words, He went forth with His disciples over the brook Kidron (Cedron), where was a garden, into the which He entered, and His disciples.

18:2And Yehudah (Judas) also, which betrayed Him, knew the place: for Yeshua ofttimes resorted thither with His disciples.

18:3Yehudah then, having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, comes thither with lanterns and torches and weapons.

18:4Yeshua therefore, knowing all things that should come upon Him, went forth, and said unto them, “Whom seek you?”

Ἰησοῦς οὖν, εἰδὼς πάντα τὰ ἐρχόμενα ἐπ’ αὐτόν, ἐξελθὼν εἶπεν αὐτοῖς, Τίνα ζητεῖτε;

18:5They answered Him, “Yeshua of Natzrat (Nazareth).” Yeshua says unto them, “I am He.” And Yehudah also, which betrayed Him, stood with them.

18:6As soon then as He had said unto them, “I am He,” they went backward, and fell to the ground.

18:7Then asked He them again, “Whom seek you?” And they said, “Yeshua of Natzrat.”

18:8Yeshua answered, “I have told you that I am He: if therefore you seek Me, let these go their way:”

18:9That the saying might be fulfilled, which He spoke, “Of them which You gave Me have I lost none.”

18:10Then Shim’on (Simon) Peter having a sword drew it, and struck the high priest’s servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus.

18:11Then said Yeshua unto Peter, “Put up your sword into the sheath: the cup which My Father has given Me, shall I not drink it?”

εἶπεν οὖν ὁ Ἰησοῦς τῷ Πέτρῳ, Βάλε τὴν μάχαιράν σου εἰς τὴν θήκην· τὸ ποτήριον ὃ δέδωκέ μοι ὁ πατήρ, οὐ μὴ πίω αὐτό;

Yeshua before the high priest

18:12Then the band and the captain and officers of the Jews took Yeshua, and bound Him,

18:13And led Him away to Ḥanan (Annas) first; for he was father in law to Kayafa (Caiaphas), which was the high priest that same year.

18:14Now Kayafa was he, which gave counsel to the Jews, that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.

Peter’s first denial

18:15And Shim’on Peter followed Yeshua, and so did another disciple: that disciple was known unto the high priest, and went in with Yeshua into the palace of the high priest.

18:16But Peter stood at the door without. Then went out that other disciple, which was known unto the high priest, and spoke unto her that kept the door, and brought in Peter.

18:17Then says the damsel that kept the door unto Peter, “Are not you also one of this man’s disciples?” He says, “I am not.”

18:18And the servants and officers stood there, who had made a fire of coals; for it was cold: and they warmed themselves: and Peter stood with them, and warmed himself.

The high priest questions Yeshua

18:19The high priest then asked Yeshua of His disciples, and of His doctrine.

18:20Yeshua answered him, “I spoke openly to the world; I ever taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews always resort; and in secret have I said nothing.

18:21Why ask you Me? ask them which heard Me, what I have said unto them: behold, they know what I said.”

18:22And when He had thus spoken, one of the officers which stood by struck Yeshua with the palm of his hand, saying, “Answer You the high priest so?”

ταῦτα δὲ αὐτοῦ εἰπόντος, εἷς τῶν ὑπηρετῶν παρεστηκὼς ἔδωκε ῥάπισμα τῷ Ἰησοῦ, εἰπών, Οὕτως ἀποκρίνῃ τῷ ἀρχιερεῖ;

18:23Yeshua answered him, “If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil: but if well, why strike you Me?”

ἀπεκρίθη αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς, Εἰ κακῶς ἐλάλησα, μαρτύρησον περὶ τοῦ κακοῦ· εἰ δὲ καλῶς, τί με δέρεις;

18:24Now Ḥanan had sent Him bound unto Kayafa the high priest.

Peter denies again

18:25And Shim’on Peter stood and warmed himself. They said therefore unto him, “Are not you also one of His disciples?” He denied it, and said, “I am not.”

18:26One of the servants of the high priest, being his kinsman whose ear Peter cut off, says, “Did not I see you in the garden with Him?”

λέγει εἷς ἐκ τῶν δούλων τοῦ ἀρχιερέως, συγγενὴς ὢν οὗ ἀπέκοψε Πέτρος τὸ ὠτίον, Οὐκ ἐγώ σε εἶδον ἐν τῷ κήπῳ μετ’ αὐτοῦ;

18:27Peter then denied again: and immediately the cock crew.

Yeshua before Pilate

18:28Then led they Yeshua from Kayafa unto the hall of judgment: and it was early; and they themselves went not into the judgment hall, lest they should be defiled; but that they might eat the passover.

18:29Pilate then went out unto them, and said, “What accusation bring you against this man?”

ἐξῆλθεν οὖν ὁ Πιλάτος πρὸς αὐτούς, καὶ εἶπε, Τίνα κατηγορίαν φέρετε κατὰ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου τούτου;

18:30They answered and said unto him, “If He were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered Him up unto you.”

18:31Then said Pilate unto them, “Take you Him, and judge Him according to your Torah.” The Jews therefore said unto him, “It is not lawful for us to put any man to death:”

18:32That the saying of Yeshua might be fulfilled, which He spoke, signifying what death He should die.

18:33Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall again, and called Yeshua, and said unto Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?”

Εἰσῆλθεν οὖν εἰς τὸ πραιτώριον πάλιν ὁ Πιλάτος, καὶ ἐφώνησε τὸν Ἰησοῦν, καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ, Σὺ εἶ ὁ βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων;

18:34Yeshua answered him, “Say you this thing of yourself, or did others tell it you of Me?”

ἀπεκρίθη αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς, Ἀφ’ ἑαυτοῦ σὺ τοῦτο λέγεις, ἢ ἄλλοι σοι εἶπον περὶ ἐμοῦ;

18:35Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered You unto me: what have You done?”

ἀπεκρίθη ὁ Πιλάτος, Μήτι ἐγὼ Ἰουδαῖός εἰμι; τὸ ἔθνος τὸ σὸν καὶ οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς παρέδωκάν σε ἐμοί· τί ἐποίησας;

18:36Yeshua answered, “My kingdom is not of this world: if My kingdom were of this world, then would My servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is My kingdom not from hence.”

18:37Pilate therefore said unto Him, “Are You a king then?” Yeshua answered, “You say that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth hears My voice.”

18:38Pilate says unto Him, “What is truth?” And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and says unto them, “I find in Him no fault at all.

18:39But you have a custom, that I should release unto you one at the passover: will you therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews?”

ἔστι δὲ συνήθεια ὑμῖν, ἵνα ἕνα ὑμῖν ἀπολύσω ἐν τῷ πάσχα· βούλεσθε οὖν ὑμῖν ἀπολύσω τὸν βασιλέα τῶν Ἰουδαίων;

18:40Then cried they all again, saying, “Not this man, but Bar-Abba (Barabbas).” Now Bar-Abba was a robber.

English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places with Hebrew names carry them, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yeshua (Jesus)); Greek and Roman names keep their English form. Christ is “Messiah”; Lord, used of Yeshua, is “Master”; where the Greek has Kyrios for God, the English keeps “the Lord.” “Church” is “congregation,” “baptize” is “immerse,” and the Holy Ghost is “the Holy Spirit.”
