John, Chapter 17

יוחנן יז

Yeshua lifts up His eyes to heaven and prays to the Father: that the Son be glorified, that the disciples the Father gave Him be kept and sanctified in the world, and that all who believe through their word may be one.

17:1These words spoke Yeshua (Jesus), and lifted up His eyes to heaven, and said, “Father, the hour is come; glorify Your Son, that Your Son also may glorify You:

17:2As You have given Him power over all flesh, that He should give eternal life to as many as You have given Him.

καθὼς ἔδωκας αὐτῷ ἐξουσίαν πάσης σαρκός, ἵνα πᾶν ὃ δέδωκας αὐτῷ, δώσῃ αὐτοῖς ζωὴν αἰώνιον

בהרי נתת לו סמכות וכוח על כל בני־האדם, כדי שיעניק חיי עולם לכל מי שנתת לו.

17:3And this is life eternal, that they might know You the only true God, and Yeshua the Messiah, whom You have sent.

αὕτη δέ ἐστιν ἡ αἰώνιος ζωή, ἵνα γινώσκωσί σε τὸν μόνον ἀληθινὸν Θεόν, καὶ ὃν ἀπέστειλας Ἰησοῦν Χριστόν.

גחיי עולם פירושם להכיר אותך, אלוהי האמת לבדו, ואת ישוע המשיח אשר שלחת.

17:4I have glorified You on the earth: I have finished the work which You gave Me to do.

ἐγώ σε ἐδόξασα ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς· τὸ ἔργον ετελείωσα ὃ δέδωκάς μοι ἵνα ποιήσω

דסיימתי את המשימה שהטלת עלי, וכך פארתי אותך על־פני הארץ.

17:5And now, O Father, glorify You Me with Your own self with the glory which I had with You before the world was.

καὶ νῦν δόξασόν με σύ, πάτερ, παρὰ σεαυτῷ τῇ δόξῃ ᾗ εἶχον πρὸ τοῦ τὸν κόσμον εἶναι παρὰ σοί.

העתה, אבי, פאר אותי בכבוד שהיה לי איתך עוד לפני בריאת העולם.

Yeshua prays for His disciples

17:6I have manifested Your name unto the men which You gave Me out of the world: Yours they were, and You gave them Me; and they have kept Your word.

17:7Now they have known that all things whatever You have given Me are of You.

νῦν ἔγνωκαν ὅτι πάντα ὅσα δέδωκάς μοι, παρὰ σοῦ ἐστίν·

זעתה הם יודעים שכל מה שנתת לי ממך הוא,

17:8For I have given unto them the words which You gave Me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from You, and they have believed that You did send Me.

17:9I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which You have given Me; for they are Yours.

ἐγὼ περὶ αὐτῶν ἐρωτῶ· οὐ περὶ τοῦ κόσμου ἐρωτῶ, ἀλλὰ περὶ ὧν δέδωκάς μοι, ὅτι σοί εἰσι·

ט”איני מתפלל בעד העולם כולו, אלא בעד אלה שנתת לי, כי הם שייכים לך.

17:10And all Mine are Yours, and Yours are Mine; and I am glorified in them.

καὶ τὰ ἐμὰ πάντα σά ἐστι, καὶ τὰ σὰ ἐμά· καὶ δεδόξασμαι ἐν αὐτοῖς.

יאלה שהם שלי הם שלך, ושלך הם שלי, ולכן הם תפארתי.

17:11And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, keep through Your own name those whom You have given Me, that they may be one, as We are.

17:12While I was with them in the world, I kept them in Your name: those that You gave Me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled.

17:13And now come I to You; and these things I speak in the world, that they might have My joy fulfilled in themselves.

νῦν δὲ πρός σε ἔρχομαι, καὶ ταῦτα λαλῶ ἐν τῷ κόσμῳ, ἵνα ἔχωσι τὴν χαρὰν τὴν ἐμὴν πεπληρωμένην ἐν αὐτοῖς.

יג”עכשיו אני בא אליך. סיפרתי להם דברים רבים בהיותי עמם, כדי שיימלאו בשמחתי,

17:14I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

ἐγὼ δέδωκα αὐτοῖς τὸν λόγον σου, καὶ ὁ κόσμος ἐμίσησεν αὐτούς, ὅτι οὐκ εἰσὶν ἐκ τοῦ κόσμου, καθὼς ἐγὼ οὐκ εἰμὶ ἐκ τοῦ κόσμου.

ידומסרתי להם את מצוותיך. העולם שונא אותם, כי אינם שייכים לו, כשם שאני איני שייך לעולם.

17:15I pray not that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil.

οὐκ ἐρωτῶ ἵνα ἄρῃς αὐτοὺς ἐκ τοῦ κόσμου, ἀλλ’ ἵνα τηρήσῃς αὐτοὺς ἐκ τοῦ πονηροῦ.

טואני לא מבקש ממך להוציא אותם מהעולם, אלא לשמרם מהרע.

17:16They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

ἐκ τοῦ κόσμου οὐκ εἰσί, καθὼς ἐγὼ ἐκ τοῦ κόσμου οὐκ εἰμί.

טזהם אינם שייכים לעולם הזה, כשם שאני איני שייך לעולם הזה.

17:17Sanctify them through Your truth: Your word is truth.

ἁγίασον αὐτοὺς ἐν τῇ ἀληθείᾳ σου· ὁ λόγος ὁ σὸς ἀλήθειά ἐστι.

יזלמד אותם את דבר האמת, כדי שיהיו קדושים וטהורים.

17:18As You have sent Me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.

καθὼς ἐμὲ ἀπέστειλας εἰς τὸν κόσμον, κἀγὼ ἀπέστειλα αὐτοὺς εἰς τὸν κόσμον.

יחכשם ששלחת אותי אל העולם כך גם אני שולח אותם אל העולם.

17:19And for their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth.

καὶ ὑπὲρ αὐτῶν ἐγὼ ἁγιάζω ἐμαυτόν, ἵνα καὶ αὐτοὶ ὦσιν ἡγιασμένοι ἐν ἀληθείᾳ.

יטאני מוסר את עצמי למענם, כדי שיגדלו באמת ובקדושה.

Yeshua prays for all who believe

17:20Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on Me through their word;

οὐ περὶ τούτων δὲ ἐρωτῶ μόνον, ἀλλὰ καὶ περὶ τῶν πιστευσόντων διὰ τοῦ λόγου αὐτῶν εἰς ἐμέ·

כ”אינני מתפלל רק בעד אלה כאן, אלא גם בעד אלה שיאמינו בי בעתיד, לאחר שישמעו את עדויות המאמינים.

17:21That they all may be one; as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You, that they also may be one in Us: that the world may believe that You have sent Me.

17:22And the glory which You gave Me I have given them; that they may be one, even as We are one:

καὶ ἐγὼ τὴν δόξαν ἣν δέδωκάς μοι, δέδωκα αὐτοῖς, ἵνα ὦσιν ἓν, καθὼς ἡμεῖς ἕν ἐσμεν.

כב”נתתי להם את הכבוד שנתת לי, כדי שיהיו מאוחדים כשם שאנחנו מאוחדים –

17:23I in them, and You in Me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them, as You have loved Me.

17:24Father, I will that they also, whom You have given Me, be with Me where I am; that they may behold My glory, which You have given Me: for You loved Me before the foundation of the world.

17:25O righteous Father, the world has not known You: but I have known You, and these have known that You have sent Me.

πάτερ δίκαιε, καὶ ὁ κόσμος σε οὐκ ἔγνω, ἐγὼ δέ σε ἔγνων, καὶ οὗτοι ἔγνωσαν ὅτι σύ με ἀπέστειλας·

כה”הו, אבי הצדיק, העולם אינו מכיר אותך, אבל אני מכיר אותך, והתלמידים שנתת לי יודעים שאתה שלחתני.

17:26And I have declared unto them Your name, and will declare it: that the love wherewith You have loved Me may be in them, and I in them.”

καὶ ἐγνώρισα αὐτοῖς τὸ ὄνομά σου, καὶ γνωρίσω· ἵνα ἡ ἀγάπη, ἣν ἠγάπησάς με, ἐν αὐτοῖς ᾖ, κἀγὼ ἐν αὐτοῖς.

כואני הודעתי להם את שמך, ואוסיף להודיע, כדי שהם יאהבו אותי כשם שאתה אוהב אותי וכדי שגם אני אהיה בהם.“

Sources & method

English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places with Hebrew names carry them, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yeshua (Jesus)); Greek and Roman names keep their English form. Christ is “Messiah”; Lord, used of Yeshua, is “Master”; where the Greek has Kyrios for God, the English keeps “the Lord.” “Church” is “congregation,” “baptize” is “immerse,” and the Holy Ghost is “the Holy Spirit.”
