John, Chapter 16
Yeshua warns His disciples that they will be put out of the synagogues and tells them the Comforter will come when He goes away, to reprove the world and guide them into all truth. Their sorrow will turn to joy, and He tells them that He has overcome the world.
16:1“These things have I spoken unto you, that you should not be offended.
16:2They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time comes, that whoever kills you will think that he does God service.
16:3And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor Me.
16:4But these things have I told you, that when the time shall come, you may remember that I told you of them. And these things I said not unto you at the beginning, because I was with you.
16:5But now I go My way to Him that sent Me; and none of you asks Me, ‘Whither go You?’
νῦν δὲ ὑπάγω πρὸς τὸν πέμψαντά με, καὶ οὐδεὶς ἐξ ὑμῶν ἐρωτᾷ με, Ποῦ ὑπάγεις;
16:6But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow has filled your heart.
16:7Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send Him unto you.
16:8And when He is come, He will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
16:9Of sin, because they believe not on Me;
16:10Of righteousness, because I go to My Father, and you see Me no more;
16:11Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.
16:12I have yet many things to say unto you, but you cannot bear them now.
16:13Howbeit when He, the Spirit of truth, is come, He will guide you into all truth: for He shall not speak of Himself; but whatever He shall hear, that shall He speak: and He will show you things to come.
16:14He shall glorify Me: for He shall receive of Mine, and shall show it unto you.
16:15All things that the Father has are Mine: therefore said I, that He shall take of Mine, and shall show it unto you.
16:16A little while, and you shall not see Me: and again, a little while, and you shall see Me, because I go to the Father.”
16:17Then said some of His disciples among themselves, “What is this that He says unto us, ‘A little while, and you shall not see Me: and again, a little while, and you shall see Me:’ and, ‘Because I go to the Father’?”
εἶπον οὖν ἐκ τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ πρὸς ἀλλήλους, Τί ἐστι τοῦτο ὃ λέγει ἡμῖν, Μικρὸν καὶ οὐ θεωρεῖτέ με, καὶ πάλιν μικρὸν καὶ ὄψεσθέ με; καὶ ὅτι Ἐγὼ ὑπάγω πρὸς τὸν πατέρα;
16:18They said therefore, “What is this that He says, ‘A little while’? we cannot tell what He says.”
16:19Now Yeshua (Jesus) knew that they were desirous to ask Him, and said unto them, “Do you enquire among yourselves of that I said, ‘A little while, and you shall not see Me: and again, a little while, and you shall see Me’?
ἔγνω οὖν ὁ Ἰησοῦς ὅτι ἤθελον αὐτὸν ἐρωτᾷν, καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς, Περὶ τούτου ζητεῖτε μετ’ ἀλλήλων, ὅτι εἶπον, Μικρὸν καὶ οὐ θεωρεῖτέ με, καὶ πάλιν μικρὸν καὶ ὄψεσθέ με;
16:20Truly, truly, I say unto you, That you shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: and you shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy.
16:21A woman when she is in travail has sorrow, because her hour is come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembers no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world.
16:22And you now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man takes from you.
16:23And in that day you shall ask Me nothing. Truly, truly, I say unto you, Whatever you shall ask the Father in My name, He will give it you.
16:24Hitherto have you asked nothing in My name: ask, and you shall receive, that your joy may be full.
16:25These things have I spoken unto you in proverbs: but the time comes, when I shall no more speak unto you in proverbs, but I shall show you plainly of the Father.
16:26At that day you shall ask in My name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you:
16:27For the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me, and have believed that I came out from God.
16:28I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go to the Father.”
16:29His disciples said unto Him, “Lo, now speak You plainly, and speak no proverb.
16:30Now are we sure that You know all things, and need not that any man should ask You: by this we believe that You came forth from God.”
16:31Yeshua answered them, “Do you now believe?
ἀπεκρίθη αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς, Ἄρτι πιστεύετε;
16:32Behold, the hour comes, yea, is now come, that you shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave Me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me.
16:33These things I have spoken unto you, that in Me you might have peace. In the world you shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.”

- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places with Hebrew names carry them, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yeshua (Jesus)); Greek and Roman names keep their English form. Christ is “Messiah”; Lord, used of Yeshua, is “Master”; where the Greek has Kyrios for God, the English keeps “the Lord.” “Church” is “congregation,” “baptize” is “immerse,” and the Holy Ghost is “the Holy Spirit.”
