John, Chapter 1

The Word, who was with God in the beginning, becomes flesh and dwells among us. Yoḥanan testifies that he is not the Messiah and points to Yeshua as the Lamb of God, and Andrew, Shim’on Peter, Philip and Netan’el begin to follow Yeshua.

1:1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

1:2The same was in the beginning with God.

1:3All things were made by Him; and without Him was not any thing made that was made.

1:4In Him was life; and the life was the light of men.

1:5And the light shines in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

1:6There was a man sent from God, whose name was Yoḥanan (John).

1:7The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.

1:8He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.

1:9That was the true Light, which lights every man that comes into the world.

1:10He was in the world, and the world was made by Him, and the world knew Him not.

1:11He came unto His own, and His own received Him not.

1:12But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name:

1:13Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

1:14And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

1:15Yoḥanan bore witness of Him, and cried, saying, “This was He of whom I spoke, ‘He that comes after me is preferred before me: for He was before me.’”

1:16And of His fulness have all we received, and grace for grace.

1:17For the Torah was given by Moshe (Moses), but grace and truth came by Yeshua (Jesus) the Messiah.

1:18No man has seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him.

The testimony of Yoḥanan

1:19And this is the record of Yoḥanan, when the Jews sent priests and Levi’im (Levites) from Yerushalayim (Jerusalem) to ask him, “Who are you?”

Καὶ αὕτη ἐστὶν ἡ μαρτυρία τοῦ Ἰωάννου, ὅτε ἀπέστειλαν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι ἐξ Ἱεροσολύμων ἱερεῖς καὶ Λευΐτας ἵνα ἐρωτήσωσιν αὐτόν, Σὺ τίς εἶ;

1:20And he confessed, and denied not; but confessed, “I am not the Messiah.”

1:21And they asked him, “What then? Are you Eliyahu (Elias)?” And he says, “I am not.” “Are you that prophet?” And he answered, “No.”

1:22Then said they unto him, “Who are you? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What say you of yourself?”

εἶπον οὖν αὐτῷ, Τίς εἶ; ἵνα ἀπόκρισιν δῶμεν τοῖς πέμψασιν ἡμᾶς τί λέγεις περὶ σεαυτοῦ;

1:23He said, “I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as said the prophet Yesha’yahu (Esaias).”

Tenakh. Quotes Isaiah 40:3.

1:24And they which were sent were of the Pharisees.

1:25And they asked him, and said unto him, “Why immerse you then, if you be not that Messiah, nor Eliyahu, neither that prophet?”

καὶ ἠρώτησαν αὐτόν, καὶ εἶπον αὐτῷ, Τί οὖν βαπτίζεις, εἰ σὺ οὐκ εἶ ὁ Χριστός, οὔτε Ἠλίας, οὔτε ὁ προφήτης;

1:26Yoḥanan answered them, saying, “I immerse with water: but there stands one among you, whom you know not;

1:27He it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe’s latchet I am not worthy to unloose.”

1:28These things were done in Beit Avarah (Bethabara) beyond Yarden (Jordan), where Yoḥanan was immersing.

The Lamb of God

1:29The next day Yoḥanan sees Yeshua coming unto him, and says, “Behold the Lamb of God, which takes away the sin of the world.

1:30This is He of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man which is preferred before me: for He was before me.’

1:31And I knew Him not: but that He should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come immersing with water.”

1:32And Yoḥanan bore record, saying, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon Him.

1:33And I knew Him not: but He that sent me to immerse with water, the same said unto me, ‘Upon whom you shall see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is He which immerses with the Holy Spirit.’

1:34And I saw, and bore record that this is the Son of God.”

The first disciples

1:35Again the next day after Yoḥanan stood, and two of his disciples;

1:36And looking upon Yeshua as He walked, he says, “Behold the Lamb of God!”

1:37And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Yeshua.

1:38Then Yeshua turned, and saw them following, and says unto them, “What seek you?” They said unto Him, “Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Teacher,) where dwell You?”

στραφεὶς δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς καὶ θεασάμενος αὐτοὺς ἀκολουθοῦντας, λέγει αὐτοῖς, Τί ζητεῖτε; οἱ δὲ εἶπον αὐτῷ, Ῥαββί ὃ λέγεται ἑρμηνευόμενον, Διδάσκαλε, ποῦ μένεις;

1:39He says unto them, “Come and see.” They came and saw where He dwelt, and abode with Him that day: for it was about the tenth hour.

1:40One of the two which heard Yoḥanan speak, and followed Him, was Andrew, Shim’on (Simon) Peter’s brother.

1:41He first finds his own brother Shim’on, and says unto him, “We have found the Mashiach (Messias),” which is, being interpreted, the Messiah.

1:42And he brought him to Yeshua. And when Yeshua beheld him, He said, “You are Shim’on the son of Yonah (Jona): you shall be called Kefa (Cephas),” which is by interpretation, A stone.

Philip and Netan’el

1:43The day following Yeshua would go forth into Galil (Galilee), and finds Philip, and says unto him, “Follow Me.”

1:44Now Philip was of Beit Tzaidah (Bethsaida), the city of Andrew and Peter.

1:45Philip finds Netan’el (Nathanael), and says unto him, “We have found Him, of whom Moshe in the Torah, and the prophets, did write, Yeshua of Natzrat (Nazareth), the son of Yosef (Joseph).”

1:46And Netan’el said unto him, “Can there any good thing come out of Natzrat?” Philip says unto him, “Come and see.”

1:47Yeshua saw Netan’el coming to Him, and says of him, “Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!”

1:48Netan’el says unto Him, “Whence know You me?” Yeshua answered and said unto him, “Before that Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.”

1:49Netan’el answered and says unto Him, “Rabbi, You are the Son of God; You are the King of Israel.”

1:50Yeshua answered and said unto him, “Because I said unto you, ‘I saw you under the fig tree,’ believe you? you shall see greater things than these.”

1:51And He says unto him, “Truly, truly, I say unto you, Hereafter you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.”

English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places with Hebrew names carry them, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yeshua (Jesus)); Greek and Roman names keep their English form. Christ is “Messiah”; Lord, used of Yeshua, is “Master”; where the Greek has Kyrios for God, the English keeps “the Lord.” “Church” is “congregation,” “baptize” is “immerse,” and the Holy Ghost is “the Holy Spirit.”
