Acts, Chapter 9
On the road to Damesek, Shaul is struck down by a light from heaven and hears the voice of Yeshua. Ḥananyah restores his sight and he is immersed, preaches in Damesek, escapes over the wall, and is brought to the apostles by Bar-Naba. Peter heals Aeneas at Lod and raises Tavita at Yafo.
9:1And Shaul (Saul), yet breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the Master, went unto the high priest,
9:2And desired of him letters to Damesek (Damascus) to the synagogues, that if he found any of this way, whether they were men or women, he might bring them bound unto Yerushalayim (Jerusalem).
9:3And as he journeyed, he came near Damesek: and suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven:
9:4And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, “Shaul, Shaul, why do you persecute Me?”
καὶ πεσὼν ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν, ἤκουσε φωνὴν λέγουσαν αὐτῷ, Σαούλ, Σαούλ, τί με διώκεις;
9:5And he said, “Who are You, Master?” And the Master said, “I am Yeshua (Jesus) whom you persecute: it is hard for you to kick against the pricks.”
9:6And he trembling and astonished said, “Master, what will You have me to do?” And the Master said unto him, “Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told you what you must do.”
9:7And the men which journeyed with him stood speechless, hearing a voice, but seeing no man.
9:8And Shaul arose from the earth; and when his eyes were opened, he saw no man: but they led him by the hand, and brought him into Damesek.
9:9And he was three days without sight, and neither did eat nor drink.
9:10And there was a certain disciple at Damesek, named Ḥananyah (Ananias); and to him said the Master in a vision, “Ḥananyah.” And he said, “Behold, I am here, Master.”
9:11And the Master said unto him, “Arise, and go into the street which is called Straight, and enquire in the house of Yehudah (Judas) for one called Shaul, of Tarsus: for, behold, he prays,
9:12And has seen in a vision a man named Ḥananyah coming in, and putting his hand on him, that he might receive his sight.”
9:13Then Ḥananyah answered, “Master, I have heard by many of this man, how much evil he has done to Your saints at Yerushalayim:
9:14And here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all that call on Your name.”
9:15But the Master said unto him, “Go your way: for he is a chosen vessel unto Me, to bear My name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel:
9:16For I will show him how great things he must suffer for My name’s sake.”
9:17And Ḥananyah went his way, and entered into the house; and putting his hands on him said, “Brother Shaul, the Master, even Yeshua, that appeared unto you in the way as you came, has sent me, that you might receive your sight, and be filled with the Holy Spirit.”
9:18And immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales: and he received sight forthwith, and arose, and was immersed.
9:19And when he had received food, he was strengthened. Then was Shaul certain days with the disciples which were at Damesek.
9:20And straightway he preached Messiah in the synagogues, that He is the Son of God.
9:21But all that heard him were amazed, and said; “Is not this he that destroyed them which called on this name in Yerushalayim, and came hither for that intent, that he might bring them bound unto the chief priests?”
ἐξίσταντο δὲ πάντες οἱ ἀκούοντες καὶ ἔλεγον, Οὐχ οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ πορθήσας ἕν Ἰερουσαλὴμ τοὺς ἐπικαλουμένους τὸ ὄνομα τοῦτο, καὶ ὧδε εἰς τοῦτο ἐληλύθει ἵνα δεδεμένους αὐτοὺς ἀγάγῃ ἐπὶ τοὺς ἀρχιερεῖς;
9:22But Shaul increased the more in strength, and confounded the Jews which dwelt at Damesek, proving that this is very Messiah.
9:23And after that many days were fulfilled, the Jews took counsel to kill him:
9:24But their laying await was known of Shaul. And they watched the gates day and night to kill him.
9:25Then the disciples took him by night, and let him down by the wall in a basket.
9:26And when Shaul was come to Yerushalayim, he assayed to join himself to the disciples: but they were all afraid of him, and believed not that he was a disciple.
9:27But Bar-Naba (Barnabas) took him, and brought him to the apostles, and declared unto them how he had seen the Master in the way, and that He had spoken to him, and how he had preached boldly at Damesek in the name of Yeshua.
9:28And he was with them coming in and going out at Yerushalayim.
9:29And he spoke boldly in the name of the Master Yeshua, and disputed against the Grecians: but they went about to slay him.
9:30Which when the brethren knew, they brought him down to Caesarea, and sent him forth to Tarsus.
9:31Then had the congregations rest throughout all Yehudah (Judaea) and Galil (Galilee) and Shomron (Samaria), and were edified; and walking in the fear of the Master, and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, were multiplied.
9:32And it came to pass, as Peter passed throughout all quarters, he came down also to the saints which dwelt at Lod (Lydda).
9:33And there he found a certain man named Aeneas, which had kept his bed eight years, and was sick of the palsy.
9:34And Peter said unto him, “Aeneas, Yeshua the Messiah makes you whole: arise, and make your bed.” And he arose immediately.
9:35And all that dwelt at Lod and Sharon (Saron) saw him, and turned to the Master.
9:36Now there was at Yafo (Joppa) a certain disciple named Tavita (Tabitha), which by interpretation is called Dorcas: this woman was full of good works and almsdeeds which she did.
9:37And it came to pass in those days, that she was sick, and died: whom when they had washed, they laid her in an upper chamber.
9:38And forasmuch as Lod was nigh to Yafo, and the disciples had heard that Peter was there, they sent unto him two men, desiring him that he would not delay to come to them.
9:39Then Peter arose and went with them. When he was come, they brought him into the upper chamber: and all the widows stood by him weeping, and showing the coats and garments which Dorcas made, while she was with them.
9:40But Peter put them all forth, and kneeled down, and prayed; and turning him to the body said, “Tavita, arise.” And she opened her eyes: and when she saw Peter, she sat up.
9:41And he gave her his hand, and lifted her up, and when he had called the saints and widows, presented her alive.
9:42And it was known throughout all Yafo; and many believed in the Master.
9:43And it came to pass, that he tarried many days in Yafo with one Shim’on (Simon) a tanner.

- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places with Hebrew names carry them, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yeshua (Jesus)); Greek and Roman names keep their English form. Christ is “Messiah”; Lord, used of Yeshua, is “Master”; where the Greek has Kyrios for God, the English keeps “the Lord.” “Church” is “congregation,” “baptize” is “immerse,” and the Holy Ghost is “the Holy Spirit.”
