Acts, Chapter 1

Luke writes to Theophilus of Yeshua’s forty days with the apostles after His suffering and of His command to wait in Yerushalayim for the Holy Spirit. Yeshua is taken up into heaven before their eyes, and the disciples pray together and choose Matiyah by lot to take the place of Yehudah.

The promise of the Holy Spirit

1:1The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Yeshua (Jesus) began both to do and teach,

1:2Until the day in which He was taken up, after that He through the Holy Spirit had given commandments unto the apostles whom He had chosen:

1:3To whom also He showed Himself alive after His passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God:

1:4And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Yerushalayim (Jerusalem), but wait for the promise of the Father, “which,” says He, “you have heard of Me.

1:5For Yoḥanan (John) truly immersed with water; but you shall be immersed with the Holy Spirit not many days hence.”

Yeshua is taken up

1:6When they therefore were come together, they asked of Him, saying, “Master, will You at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?”

Οἱ μὲν οὖν συνελθόντες ἐπἠρώτων αὐτὸν λέγοντες, Κύριε, εἰ ἐν τῷ χρόνῳ τούτῳ ἀποκαθιστάνεις τὴν βασιλείαν τῷ Ἰσραήλ;

1:7And He said unto them, “It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father has put in His own power.

1:8But you shall receive power, after that the Holy Spirit is come upon you: and you shall be witnesses unto Me both in Yerushalayim, and in all Yehudah (Judaea), and in Shomron (Samaria), and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”

1:9And when He had spoken these things, while they beheld, He was taken up; and a cloud received Him out of their sight.

1:10And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel;

1:11Which also said, “You men of Galil (Galilee), why do you stand gazing up into heaven? this same Yeshua, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as you have seen Him go into heaven.”

Waiting in the upper room

1:12Then returned they unto Yerushalayim from the mount called Olivet, which is from Yerushalayim a sabbath day’s journey.

1:13And when they were come in, they went up into an upper room, where abode both Peter, and Ya’akov (James), and Yoḥanan, and Andrew, Philip, and Toma (Thomas), Bar-Talmai (Bartholomew), and Mattai (Matthew), Ya’akov the son of Ḥalfai (Alphaeus), and Shim’on (Simon) Kanai (Zelotes), and Yehudah (Judas) the brother of Ya’akov.

1:14These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Miryam (Mary) the mother of Yeshua, and with His brethren.

Matiyah is chosen

1:15And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples, and said, (the number of names together were about a hundred and twenty,)

1:16“Men and brethren, this scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit by the mouth of David spoke before concerning Yehudah, which was guide to them that took Yeshua.

1:17For he was numbered with us, and had obtained part of this ministry.

1:18Now this man purchased a field with the reward of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out.

1:19And it was known unto all the dwellers at Yerushalayim; insomuch as that field is called in their proper tongue, Ḥakal Dema (Aceldama), that is to say, The field of blood.

1:20For it is written in the book of Psalms, ‘Let his habitation be desolate, and let no man dwell therein:’ and ‘his bishopric let another take.’

1:21Wherefore of these men which have companied with us all the time that the Master Yeshua went in and out among us,

1:22Beginning from the immersion of Yoḥanan, unto that same day that He was taken up from us, must one be ordained to be a witness with us of His resurrection.”

1:23And they appointed two, Yosef (Joseph) called Bar-Shaba (Barsabas), who was surnamed Justus, and Matiyah (Matthias).

1:24And they prayed, and said, “You, Lord, which know the hearts of all men, show whether of these two You have chosen,

1:25That he may take part of this ministry and apostleship, from which Yehudah by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place.”

1:26And they gave forth their lots; and the lot fell upon Matiyah; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.

Sources & method

English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places with Hebrew names carry them, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yeshua (Jesus)); Greek and Roman names keep their English form. Christ is “Messiah”; Lord, used of Yeshua, is “Master”; where the Greek has Kyrios for God, the English keeps “the Lord.” “Church” is “congregation,” “baptize” is “immerse,” and the Holy Ghost is “the Holy Spirit.”
