Psalm 69

David’s cry to God from deep waters and mire, bearing reproach for His sake, asking deliverance and God’s indignation on his enemies, and ending in praise, for God will save Tziyon.

Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible, where the heading is verse 1. In most English Bibles the heading has no number, so each verse here is one higher than there (verse 2 here is verse 1 there).

69:1To the chief Musician upon Shoshannim, A Psalm of David.

69:2Save me, O God; for the waters are come in unto my soul.

69:3I sink in deep mire, where there is no standing: I am come into deep waters, where the floods overflow me.

69:4I am weary of my crying: my throat is dried: my eyes fail while I wait for my God.

69:5They that hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of my head: they that would destroy me, being my enemies wrongfully, are mighty: then I restored that which I took not away.

69:6O God, You know my foolishness; and my sins are not hid from You.

69:7Let not them that wait on You, O Lord Hashem of hosts, be ashamed for my sake: let not those that seek You be confounded for my sake, O God of Israel.

69:8Because for Your sake I have borne reproach; shame has covered my face.

69:9I am become a stranger unto my brethren, and an alien unto my mother’s children.

69:10For the zeal of Your house has eaten me up; and the reproaches of them that reproached You are fallen upon me.

69:11When I wept, and chastened my soul with fasting, that was to my reproach.

69:12I made sackcloth also my garment; and I became a proverb to them.

69:13They that sit in the gate speak against me; and I was the song of the drunkards.

69:14But as for me, my prayer is unto You, O Hashem, in an acceptable time: O God, in the multitude of Your mercy hear me, in the truth of Your salvation.

69:15Deliver me out of the mire, and let me not sink: let me be delivered from them that hate me, and out of the deep waters.

69:16Let not the waterflood overflow me, neither let the deep swallow me up, and let not the pit shut her mouth upon me.

69:17Hear me, O Hashem; for Your lovingkindness is good: turn unto me according to the multitude of Your tender mercies.

69:18And hide not Your face from Your servant; for I am in trouble: hear me speedily.

69:19Draw nigh unto my soul, and redeem it: deliver me because of my enemies.

69:20You have known my reproach, and my shame, and my dishonour: my adversaries are all before You.

69:21Reproach has broken my heart; and I am full of heaviness: and I looked for some to take pity, but there was none; and for comforters, but I found none.

69:22They gave me also gall for my food; and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.

69:23Let their table become a snare before them: and that which should have been for their welfare, let it become a trap.

69:24Let their eyes be darkened, that they see not; and make their loins continually to shake.

69:25Pour out Your indignation upon them, and let Your wrathful anger take hold of them.

69:26Let their habitation be desolate; and let none dwell in their tents.

69:27For they persecute him whom You have smitten; and they talk to the grief of those whom You have wounded.

69:28Add iniquity unto their iniquity: and let them not come into Your righteousness.

69:29Let them be blotted out of the book of the living, and not be written with the righteous.

69:30But I am poor and sorrowful: let Your salvation, O God, set me up on high.

69:31I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify Him with thanksgiving.

69:32This also shall please Hashem better than an ox or bullock that has horns and hoofs.

69:33The humble shall see this, and be glad: and your heart shall live that seek God.

69:34For Hashem hears the poor, and despises not His prisoners.

69:35Let the heaven and earth praise Him, the seas, and every thing that moves therein.

69:36For God will save Tziyon (Zion), and will build the cities of Yehudah (Judah): that they may dwell there, and have it in possession.

69:37The seed also of His servants shall inherit it: and they that love His name shall dwell therein.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. The Divine Name is printed as it appears in the codex.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the familiar English name in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Tziyon (Zion)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem,” the short form יָהּ is “Yah,” and הַלְלוּ־יָהּ is “Hallelujah”; “God” (Elohim) and “Lord” (Adonai) are unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In the Hebrew a psalm’s heading (“A Psalm of David…”) is part of the text and is counted as verse 1, or verses 1–2, so in psalms with a heading the verse numbers are often one or two higher than in English Bibles. Where that happens, a note under the summary says so.
