1 Corinthians, Chapter 4
Paul describes the apostles as ministers of Messiah and stewards of the mysteries of God, judged by the Lord alone. He contrasts the proud Corinthians with the apostles, made fools for Messiah’s sake, and warns them as their father in the gospel, sending Timothy and promising to come himself.
4:1Let a man so account of us, as of the ministers of Messiah, and stewards of the mysteries of God.
4:2Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.
4:3But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged of you, or of man’s judgment: yea, I judge not my own self.
4:4For I know nothing by myself; yet am I not hereby justified: but he that judges me is the Lord.
4:5Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Master come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts: and then shall every man have praise of God.
4:6And these things, brethren, I have in a figure transferred to myself and to Apollos for your sakes; that you might learn in us not to think of men above that which is written, that no one of you be puffed up for one against another.
4:7For who makes you to differ from another? and what have you that you did not receive? now if you did receive it, why do you glory, as if you had not received it?
τίς γάρ σε διακρίνει; τί δὲ ἔχεις ὃ οὐκ ἔλαβες; εἰ δὲ καὶ ἔλαβες, τί καυχᾶσαι ὡς μὴ λαβών;
4:8Now you are full, now you are rich, you have reigned as kings without us: and I would to God you did reign, that we also might reign with you.
4:9For I think that God has set forth us the apostles last, as it were appointed to death: for we are made a spectacle unto the world, and to angels, and to men.
4:10We are fools for Messiah’s sake, but you are wise in Messiah; we are weak, but you are strong; you are honourable, but we are despised.
4:11Even unto this present hour we both hunger, and thirst, and are naked, and are buffeted, and have no certain dwellingplace;
4:12And labour, working with our own hands: being reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we suffer it:
4:13Being defamed, we intreat: we are made as the filth of the world, and are the offscouring of all things unto this day.
4:14I write not these things to shame you, but as my beloved sons I warn you.
4:15For though you have ten thousand instructers in Messiah, yet have you not many fathers: for in Messiah Yeshua (Jesus) I have begotten you through the gospel.
4:16Wherefore I beseech you, be you followers of me.
4:17For this cause have I sent unto you Timothy (Timotheus), who is my beloved son, and faithful in the Master, who shall bring you into remembrance of my ways which be in Messiah, as I teach every where in every congregation.
4:18Now some are puffed up, as though I would not come to you.
4:19But I will come to you shortly, if the Master will, and will know, not the speech of them which are puffed up, but the power.
4:20For the kingdom of God is not in word, but in power.
4:21What will you? shall I come unto you with a rod, or in love, and in the spirit of meekness?
τί θέλετε; ἐν ῥάβδῳ ἔλθω πρὸς ὑμᾶς, ἢ ἐν ἀγάπῃ πνεύματί τε πρᾳότητος;

Sources & method
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places with Hebrew names carry them, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yeshua (Jesus)); Greek and Roman names keep their English form. Christ is “Messiah”; Lord, used of Yeshua, is “Master”; where the Greek has Kyrios for God, the English keeps “the Lord.” “Church” is “congregation,” “baptize” is “immerse,” and the Holy Ghost is “the Holy Spirit.”
