1 Corinthians, Chapter 5

Paul rebukes the Corinthians for tolerating a man who has his father’s wife and tells them to deliver him unto Satan. He calls them to purge out the old leaven, since Messiah their passover is sacrificed, and not to keep company with a so-called brother who lives in open sin.

Immorality in the congregation

5:1It is reported commonly that there is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not so much as named among the Gentiles, that one should have his father’s wife.

5:2And you are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he that has done this deed might be taken away from among you.

5:3For I truly, as absent in body, but present in spirit, have judged already, as though I were present, concerning him that has so done this deed,

5:4In the name of our Master Yeshua (Jesus) the Messiah, when you are gathered together, and my spirit, with the power of our Master Yeshua the Messiah,

5:5To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Master Yeshua.

Purge out the old leaven

5:6Your glorying is not good. Know you not that a little leaven leavens the whole lump?

Οὐ καλὸν τὸ καύχημα ὑμῶν. οὐκ οἴδατε ὅτι μικρὰ ζύμη ὅλον τὸ φύραμα ζυμοῖ;

5:7Purge out therefore the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, as you are unleavened. For even Messiah our passover is sacrificed for us:

5:8Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

Not to keep company with sinners

5:9I wrote unto you in an epistle not to company with fornicators:

5:10Yet not altogether with the fornicators of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or with idolaters; for then must you needs go out of the world.

5:11But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat.

5:12For what have I to do to judge them also that are without? do not you judge them that are within?

τί γάρ μοι καί τοὺς ἔξω κρίνειν; οὐχὶ τοὺς ἔσω ὑμεῖς κρίνετε;

5:13But them that are without God judges. Therefore put away from among yourselves that wicked person.

Sources & method

English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places with Hebrew names carry them, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yeshua (Jesus)); Greek and Roman names keep their English form. Christ is “Messiah”; Lord, used of Yeshua, is “Master”; where the Greek has Kyrios for God, the English keeps “the Lord.” “Church” is “congregation,” “baptize” is “immerse,” and the Holy Ghost is “the Holy Spirit.”
