The Maftir repeats the last verses of the Seventh Portion. When Shabbat Re’eh falls on Rosh Chodesh Elul (30 Av), as it does about three years in ten, a second Torah scroll is taken out for the Maftir for Shabbat Rosh Chodesh.
16:13You shall keep Sukkot (the feast of tabernacles) seven days, after you have gathered in your grain and your wine.

Haftarah
The third of the seven haftarot of consolation: “O you afflicted, tossed with tempest, and not comforted, behold, I will lay your stones with fair colors” (54:11), and the call, “Ho, every one who thirsts, come to the waters” (55:1). On Shabbat Rosh Chodesh Elul, Ashkenazi communities read the Rosh Chodesh haftarah instead and add these verses to the haftarah of Ki Tetze (Isaiah 54:1–55:5). Sephardic communities read this haftarah even on Rosh Chodesh, and many add the first and last verses of the Rosh Chodesh haftarah (Isaiah 66:1, 66:23). When Re’eh falls on 29 Av, the day before Rosh Chodesh, this haftarah of consolation is read, not Machar Chodesh.
54:11“O you afflicted, tossed with tempest, and not comforted, behold, I will lay your stones with fair colors, and lay your foundations with sapphires.

Haftarah: Shabbat Rosh Chodesh
Read by Ashkenazi communities on Shabbat Rosh Chodesh Elul instead of Isaiah 54:11–55:5; Sephardic communities read Isaiah 54:11–55:5, and many add only the first and last verses of this haftarah. After the last verse, verse 23 is read again, so that the haftarah ends with “from one new moon to another, and from one Shabbat to another, shall all flesh come to worship before Me” (66:23).
66:1Thus says Hashem: The heaven is My throne, and the earth is My footstool; where is the house that you build unto Me? And where is the place of My rest?

66:2For all those things My hand has made, and so all those things came to be, says Hashem; but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembles at My word.

66:3He that kills an ox is as if he slew a man; he that sacrifices a lamb, as if he broke a dog’s neck; he that offers an offering, as if he offered swine’s blood; he that burns incense, as if he blessed an idol. Yes, they have chosen their own ways, and their soul delights in their abominations.

Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim): the Westminster Leningrad Codex, from the open-source Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible. Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has,” “begat” to “begot”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the familiar English name in parentheses the first time (e.g., Moshe (Moses)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged. Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible.
- Spanish translation
- The Reina-Valera 1909 (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham in the same way as the English: older spellings and verb forms are updated (“á” to “a,” “bendecirte he” to “te bendeciré”), people and places carry their Hebrew names with the familiar Spanish name in parentheses the first time (e.g., Avram (Abram)), the Divine Name (“Jehová” in the Reina-Valera) is written “Hashem,” and “Dios” (Elohim) is unchanged. Choose the translation with the Language drop-down; the choice is remembered on this device.
- Telugu translation
- The Telugu Old Version of the Bible Society of India (Satyavedamu, public domain), lightly updated by Benei Avraham in the same way as the English and Spanish: the Divine Name (“యెహోవా” in the Old Version) is written “హషేమ్” (Hashem), people and places carry their Hebrew names with the familiar Telugu name in parentheses the first time (e.g., అవ్రామ్ (అబ్రాము)), quotation marks are added, and words damaged in the digital source text are restored. The classical style of the Old Version is kept. Choose the translation with the Language drop-down; the choice is remembered on this device.
- Transliteration
- Produced from the Hebrew with the open-source hebrew-transliteration library, adapted to Sephardic/Israeli pronunciation and reviewed by hand: ḥ for Chet and Chaf, tz for Tzadi, k for Kuf, and the Divine Name read “Adonai.” Names are capitalized.
- Aliyot & haftarot
- Portion divisions and haftarah readings follow the standard Jewish calendar outside Israel, cross-checked with Chabad.org and Hebcal. Ashkenazi and Sephardic haftarah customs are both shown.
- Hebrew font
- SBL Hebrew, by the Society of Biblical Literature.
