Purim פורים
“Lots” · Exodus 17:8–16 · Megillat Esther
Purim
14 Adar (15 Adar, Shushan Purim, in Jerusalem); in a leap year, 14 Adar II. Haman was a descendant of Amalek, so on Purim morning the Torah tells of Amalek’s attack at Refidim (Rephidim) and Hashem’s war with Amalek “from generation to generation” (17:16). One scroll, three aliyot: 17:8–10, 17:11–13 and 17:14–16. There is no haftarah; Megillat Esther is read in the evening and again in the morning. The Shabbat before Purim is Shabbat Zachor (Deuteronomy 25:17–19), and the day before Purim is the Fast of Esther (see Fast days).
17:8Then came Amalek, and fought with Yisrael (Israel) in Refidim (Rephidim).
17:8Entonces vino Amalek y peleó contra Yisrael (Israel) en Refidim.
17:8తరువాత అమాలేకు వచ్చి రెఫీదీమ్లో (రెఫీదీము) యిస్రాయేల్తో (ఇశ్రాయేలు) యుద్ధము చేసెను.
Vayavo Amalek vayilaḥem im-Yisra'el biRfidim.

17:9And Moshe (Moses) said unto Yehoshua (Joshua), “Choose us out men, and go out, fight with Amalek; tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in my hand.”
Vayomer Mosheh el-Yehoshua beḥar-lanu anashim vetze hilaḥem ba'Amalek maḥar anoḥi nitzav al-rosh hagiv'ah umateh ha'Elohim beyadi.

17:10So Yehoshua did as Moshe had said to him, and fought with Amalek; and Moshe, Aharon (Aaron), and Chur (Hur) went up to the top of the hill.
17:10E hizo Yehoshúa como le dijo Moshé, peleando contra Amalek; y Moshé, Aharón (Aarón) y Jur (Hur) subieron a la cumbre del collado.
17:10యెహోషువ మోషే తనతో చెప్పినట్లు చేసి అమాలేకుతో యుద్ధము చేసెను; మోషే అహరోన్ (అహరోను) ఖూర్ (హూరు) అనువారు కొండశిఖరమెక్కిరి.

17:11And it came to pass, when Moshe held up his hand, that Yisrael prevailed; and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed.
17:11Y sucedía que cuando alzaba Moshé su mano, Yisrael prevalecía; mas cuando él bajaba su mano, prevalecía Amalek.
17:11మోషే తన చెయ్యి పైకెత్తినప్పుడు యిస్రాయేల్ గెలిచెను; తన చెయ్యి దింపినప్పుడు అమాలేకు గెలిచెను.

17:12But Moshe’s hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat on it; and Aharon and Chur held up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.

17:14And Hashem said unto Moshe, “Write this for a memorial in a book, and rehearse it in the ears of Yehoshua: for I will utterly put out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven.”

17:15And Moshe built an altar, and called the name of it Hashem Nissi (Hashem is my banner).

Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim). The readings from Genesis, Exodus and Leviticus are as published on Chabad.org (checked character by character against Chabad’s Tanakh); the readings from Numbers and Deuteronomy and the haftarot are from the Westminster Leningrad Codex, from the open-source Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible. Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has,” “begat” to “begot”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the familiar English name in parentheses the first time (e.g., Moshe (Moses)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged. Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible.
- Spanish translation
- The Reina-Valera 1909 (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham in the same way as the English: older spellings and verb forms are updated (“á” to “a,” “bendecirte he” to “te bendeciré”), people and places carry their Hebrew names with the familiar Spanish name in parentheses the first time (e.g., Avram (Abram)), the Divine Name (“Jehová” in the Reina-Valera) is written “Hashem,” and “Dios” (Elohim) is unchanged. Choose the translation with the Language drop-down; the choice is remembered on this device.
- Telugu translation
- The Telugu Old Version of the Bible Society of India (Satyavedamu, public domain), lightly updated by Benei Avraham in the same way as the English and Spanish: the Divine Name (“యెహోవా” in the Old Version) is written “హషేమ్” (Hashem), people and places carry their Hebrew names with the familiar Telugu name in parentheses the first time (e.g., అవ్రామ్ (అబ్రాము)), quotation marks are added, and words damaged in the digital source text are restored. The classical style of the Old Version is kept. Choose the translation with the Language drop-down; the choice is remembered on this device.
- Transliteration
- Produced from the Hebrew with the open-source hebrew-transliteration library, adapted to Sephardic/Israeli pronunciation and reviewed by hand: ḥ for Chet and Chaf, tz for Tzadi, k for Kuf, and the Divine Name read “Adonai.” Names are capitalized.
- Aliyot & haftarot
- Aliyot, Maftir and haftarah readings follow the standard Jewish calendar outside Israel, cross-checked with Chabad.org and Hebcal. Ashkenazi and Sephardic haftarah customs are both shown. The Torah text is the same as on the weekly Torah portion pages.
- Hebrew font
- SBL Hebrew, by the Society of Biblical Literature.
