Fast Day Reading
Read at the morning and afternoon services of Tzom Gedaliah (3 Tishrei), Asara B’Tevet (10 Tevet), Ta’anit Esther (13 Adar) and the Seventeenth of Tammuz, and at the afternoon service of Tisha B’Av. One scroll, three aliyot: Moshe pleads for the people after the golden calf, “Turn from Your fierce wrath, and repent of this evil against Your people” (32:12), and Hashem proclaims His thirteen attributes of mercy, “Hashem, Hashem, God, merciful and gracious” (34:6–7). The congregation reads aloud 32:12, 34:6–7 and 34:9 before the reader. At the afternoon service the third aliyah is the Maftir, who reads the haftarah below. When a fast is postponed to Sunday, these readings move with it.
32:11And Moshe (Moses) besought Hashem his God, and said, “Hashem, why does Your wrath wax hot against Your people, which You have brought forth out of the land of Mitzrayim (Egypt) with great power, and with a mighty hand?

32:12Why should the Egyptians speak, and say, ‘For evil did He bring them out, to slay them in the mountains, and to consume them from the face of the earth’? Turn from Your fierce wrath, and repent of this evil against Your people.

Tisha B’Av Morning
9 Av, morning. One scroll, three aliyot: the warning of exile, “Hashem shall scatter you among the nations” (4:27), and the promise, “But if from there you shall seek Hashem your God, you shall find Him” (4:29). Eichah (Lamentations) is read at night, when the fast begins. In the afternoon the reading is the fast-day reading above, with its haftarah.
4:25When you beget children, and children’s children, and you have remained long in the land, and corrupt yourselves, and make a graven image, the likeness of anything, and do evil in the sight of Hashem your God, to provoke Him to anger,
4:25Cuando hayáis engendrado hijos y nietos, y hayáis envejecido en la tierra, y os corrompáis, y hagáis escultura o imagen de cualquier cosa, y hagáis lo malo ante los ojos de Hashem vuestro Dios, para enojarlo,

Haftarah: Tisha B’Av Morning
“Oh that my head were waters, and my eyes a fountain of tears, that I might weep day and night for the slain of the daughter of my people!” (8:23). The haftarah ends with hope: “let him that glories glory in this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am Hashem” (9:23).
8:13“I will surely consume them,” says Hashem; “there shall be no grapes on the vine, nor figs on the fig tree, and the leaf shall fade; and the things that I have given them shall pass away from them.”

Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim). The readings from Genesis, Exodus and Leviticus are as published on Chabad.org (checked character by character against Chabad’s Tanakh); the readings from Numbers and Deuteronomy and the haftarot are from the Westminster Leningrad Codex, from the open-source Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible. Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has,” “begat” to “begot”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the familiar English name in parentheses the first time (e.g., Moshe (Moses)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged. Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible.
- Spanish translation
- The Reina-Valera 1909 (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham in the same way as the English: older spellings and verb forms are updated (“á” to “a,” “bendecirte he” to “te bendeciré”), people and places carry their Hebrew names with the familiar Spanish name in parentheses the first time (e.g., Avram (Abram)), the Divine Name (“Jehová” in the Reina-Valera) is written “Hashem,” and “Dios” (Elohim) is unchanged. Choose the translation with the Language drop-down; the choice is remembered on this device.
- Telugu translation
- The Telugu Old Version of the Bible Society of India (Satyavedamu, public domain), lightly updated by Benei Avraham in the same way as the English and Spanish: the Divine Name (“యెహోవా” in the Old Version) is written “హషేమ్” (Hashem), people and places carry their Hebrew names with the familiar Telugu name in parentheses the first time (e.g., అవ్రామ్ (అబ్రాము)), quotation marks are added, and words damaged in the digital source text are restored. The classical style of the Old Version is kept. Choose the translation with the Language drop-down; the choice is remembered on this device.
- Transliteration
- Produced from the Hebrew with the open-source hebrew-transliteration library, adapted to Sephardic/Israeli pronunciation and reviewed by hand: ḥ for Chet and Chaf, tz for Tzadi, k for Kuf, and the Divine Name read “Adonai.” Names are capitalized.
- Aliyot & haftarot
- Aliyot, Maftir and haftarah readings follow the standard Jewish calendar outside Israel, cross-checked with Chabad.org and Hebcal. Ashkenazi and Sephardic haftarah customs are both shown. The Torah text is the same as on the weekly Torah portion pages.
- Hebrew font
- SBL Hebrew, by the Society of Biblical Literature.
