Jubilees, Chapter 7
Noaḥ plants a vineyard and offers sacrifices on Mount Lubar, curses Kena’an and blesses Shem and Yafet; his sons build cities; and Noaḥ commands his grandsons to keep righteousness, to shed no blood and eat no blood, and to keep the law of fruit trees as Ḥanoch had commanded.
7:1And in the seventh week in the first year thereof, in this jubilee, Noaḥ (Noah) planted vines on the mountain on which the ark had rested, named Lubar, one of the Ararat Mountains, and they produced fruit in the fourth year, and he guarded their fruit, and gathered it in this year in the seventh month.

7:20And in the twenty-eighth jubilee Noaḥ began to enjoin upon his sons’ sons the ordinances and commandments, and all the judgments that he knew, and he exhorted his sons to observe righteousness, and to cover the shame of their flesh, and to bless their Creator, and honor father and mother, and love their neighbor, and guard their souls from fornication and uncleanness and all iniquity.

7:34And now, my children, hearken: work judgment and righteousness that you may be planted in righteousness over the face of the whole earth, and your glory lifted up before my God, who saved me from the waters of the flood.

7:35And behold, you will go and build for yourselves cities, and plant in them all the plants that are upon the earth, and moreover all fruit-bearing trees.

7:36For three years the fruit of everything that is eaten will not be gathered; and in the fourth year its fruit will be accounted holy, and they will offer the first-fruits, acceptable before the Most High God, who created heaven and earth and all things. Let them offer in abundance the first of the wine and oil as first-fruits on the altar of Hashem, who receives it, and what is left let the servants of the house of Hashem eat before the altar which receives it.

7:38For thus did Ḥanoch (Enoch), the father of your father, command Metushelaḥ (Methuselah), his son, and Metushelaḥ his son Lemech (Lamech), and Lemech commanded me all the things which his fathers commanded him.

Sources & method
- English translation
- R. H. Charles, The Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha of the Old Testament (Oxford, 1913), public domain, lightly modernized by Benei Avraham in the same way as our Bible pages: “thee/thou” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, people and places carry their Hebrew names with the familiar English name in parentheses the first time on each page, and “the Lord” (God) is written “Hashem.” Charles’s editorial dates are given in the notes. Digital text from the CrossWire Bible Society’s SWORD module (public domain).
- Spanish translation
- Translated by Benei Avraham from the English column, in the style of our Reina-Valera pages: Hashem for the Divine Name, Elohim for God, and Hebrew names. There is no public-domain Spanish translation of this book. Choose a translation with the Language drop-down; the choice is remembered on this device.
- Ge’ez text
- Ge’ez (classical Ethiopic) is the language of the Ethiopian Bible and the only language in which the whole book has survived; it was translated from Greek, which was translated from the lost Hebrew original. The text is August Dillmann’s edition (19th century, public domain) as published in the EOTCOpenSource Bible dataset. Verse numbers follow Charles; where Dillmann’s numbering joins two verses, the later verse says so.
- Quiz
- Written by Benei Avraham for middle-school readers (ages 11–14). Each quiz starts with easier questions and gets harder. Every answer is in the chapter on this page. Answers and scores are kept only in this browser (local storage) and can be cleared with Start over.
