Jubilees, Chapter 37

After Yitzḥak dies, the sons of Esav reproach their father for yielding the birthright to Yaakov and force him to lead four thousand hired warriors against his brother; Yaakov rebukes Esav from the tower for breaking his oath, Esav answers that he will never make peace, and Yaakov orders his household to fight.

Esav’s sons turn against Yaakov

37:1And on the day that Yitzḥak (Isaac) the father of Yaakov (Jacob) and Esav (Esau) died, the sons of Esav heard that Yitzḥak had given the portion of the elder to his younger son Yaakov, and they were very angry.

Yaakov speaks from the tower

37:14And notwithstanding all this, Yaakov did not know that they were coming against him to battle, and he was mourning for Leah, his wife, until they approached very near to the tower with four thousand warriors and chosen men of war.

37:15And the men of Ḥevron (Hebron) sent to him, saying, “Behold, your brother has come against you, to fight you, with four thousand girt with the sword, and they carry shields and weapons”; for they loved Yaakov more than Esav. So they told him; for Yaakov was a more generous and merciful man than Esav.

Esav refuses peace

37:18And then Esav answered and said unto him, “Neither the children of men nor the beasts of the earth have any oath of righteousness which in swearing they have sworn, an oath valid forever; but every day they devise evil one against another, and how each may slay his adversary and foe.

English translation
R. H. Charles, The Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha of the Old Testament (Oxford, 1913), public domain, lightly modernized by Benei Avraham in the same way as our Bible pages: “thee/thou” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, people and places carry their Hebrew names with the familiar English name in parentheses the first time on each page, and “the Lord” (God) is written “Hashem.” Charles’s editorial dates are given in the notes. Digital text from the CrossWire Bible Society’s SWORD module (public domain).
Spanish translation
Translated by Benei Avraham from the English column, in the style of our Reina-Valera pages: Hashem for the Divine Name, Elohim for God, and Hebrew names. There is no public-domain Spanish translation of this book. Choose a translation with the Language drop-down; the choice is remembered on this device.
Ge’ez text
Ge’ez (classical Ethiopic) is the language of the Ethiopian Bible and the only language in which the whole book has survived; it was translated from Greek, which was translated from the lost Hebrew original. The text is August Dillmann’s edition (19th century, public domain) as published in the EOTCOpenSource Bible dataset. Verse numbers follow Charles; where Dillmann’s numbering joins two verses, the later verse says so.
