Jubilees, Chapter 28

Yaakov serves Lavan seven years for Raḥel but is given Leah first, then Raḥel for seven more years; eleven sons and a daughter are born to him, and after Yosef’s birth he agrees to stay for a wage of spotted flocks and grows very rich, so that Lavan and his sons envy him.

Leah given before Raḥel

28:1And he went on his journey, and came to the land of the east, to Lavan (Laban), the brother of Rivkah (Rebekah), and he was with him, and served him for Raḥel (Rachel) his daughter one week.

28:2And in the first year of the third week he said unto him, “Give me my wife, for whom I have served you seven years”; and Lavan said unto Yaakov (Jacob), “I will give you your wife.”

28:3And Lavan made a feast, and took Leah his elder daughter, and gave her to Yaakov as a wife, and gave her Zilpah his handmaid for a handmaid; and Yaakov did not know, for he thought that she was Raḥel.

28:4And he went in unto her, and behold, she was Leah; and Yaakov was angry with Lavan, and said unto him, “Why have you dealt thus with me? Did I not serve you for Raḥel and not for Leah? Why have you wronged me?

¿Por qué me has agraviado?

28:5Toma a tu hija, y me iré; porque me has hecho mal».

The elder daughter first

28:6And Lavan said to Yaakov, “It is not so done in our country, to give the younger before the elder.” And it is not right to do this; for thus it is ordained and written in the heavenly tablets, that no one should give his younger daughter before the elder; but the elder, one gives first and after her the younger; and the man who does so, they set down guilt against him in heaven, and none is righteous that does this thing, for this deed is evil before Hashem.

28:11And Hashem opened the womb of Leah, and she conceived and bore Yaakov a son, and he called his name Reuven (Reuben), on the fourteenth day of the ninth month, in the first year of the third week.

Sources & method

English translation
R. H. Charles, The Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha of the Old Testament (Oxford, 1913), public domain, lightly modernized by Benei Avraham in the same way as our Bible pages: “thee/thou” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, people and places carry their Hebrew names with the familiar English name in parentheses the first time on each page, and “the Lord” (God) is written “Hashem.” Charles’s editorial dates are given in the notes. Digital text from the CrossWire Bible Society’s SWORD module (public domain).
Spanish translation
Translated by Benei Avraham from the English column, in the style of our Reina-Valera pages: Hashem for the Divine Name, Elohim for God, and Hebrew names. There is no public-domain Spanish translation of this book. Choose a translation with the Language drop-down; the choice is remembered on this device.
Ge’ez text
Ge’ez (classical Ethiopic) is the language of the Ethiopian Bible and the only language in which the whole book has survived; it was translated from Greek, which was translated from the lost Hebrew original. The text is August Dillmann’s edition (19th century, public domain) as published in the EOTCOpenSource Bible dataset. Verse numbers follow Charles; where Dillmann’s numbering joins two verses, the later verse says so.
