Jubilees, Chapter 20

Avraham gathers his sons and grandsons and commands them to do righteousness, to keep circumcision, and to keep away from uncleanness and idols; then he gives gifts to the sons of Yishma’el and Keturah and sends them east, where they become the Arabs and Yishme’elim (Ishmaelites).

Avraham’s charge to his sons

20:1And in the forty-second jubilee, in the first year of the seventh week, Avraham (Abraham) called Yishma’el (Ishmael) and his twelve sons, and Yitzḥak (Isaac) and his two sons, and the six sons of Keturah, and their sons.

20:2And he commanded them that they should observe the way of Hashem; that they should work righteousness, and love each his neighbor, and act on this manner amongst all men; that they should each so walk with regard to them as to do judgment and righteousness on the earth.

20:3That they should circumcise their sons, according to the covenant which He had made with them, and not deviate to the right hand or the left of all the paths which Hashem had commanded us; and that we should keep ourselves from all fornication and uncleanness.

20:7I implore you, my sons, love the God of heaven and cleave to all His commandments. And walk not after their idols, and after their uncleannesses,

Sources & method

English translation
R. H. Charles, The Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha of the Old Testament (Oxford, 1913), public domain, lightly modernized by Benei Avraham in the same way as our Bible pages: “thee/thou” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, people and places carry their Hebrew names with the familiar English name in parentheses the first time on each page, and “the Lord” (God) is written “Hashem.” Charles’s editorial dates are given in the notes. Digital text from the CrossWire Bible Society’s SWORD module (public domain).
Spanish translation
Translated by Benei Avraham from the English column, in the style of our Reina-Valera pages: Hashem for the Divine Name, Elohim for God, and Hebrew names. There is no public-domain Spanish translation of this book. Choose a translation with the Language drop-down; the choice is remembered on this device.
Ge’ez text
Ge’ez (classical Ethiopic) is the language of the Ethiopian Bible and the only language in which the whole book has survived; it was translated from Greek, which was translated from the lost Hebrew original. The text is August Dillmann’s edition (19th century, public domain) as published in the EOTCOpenSource Bible dataset. Verse numbers follow Charles; where Dillmann’s numbering joins two verses, the later verse says so.
