Exodus, Chapter 33

Hashem tells Moshe to lead the people to the land but says He will not go up among them, and the people mourn and remove their ornaments; Moshe pitches the tabernacle outside the camp and speaks with Hashem face to face, asks that His presence go with them, and asks to see His glory.

The command to depart

33:1And Hashem said unto Moshe (Moses), “Depart, and go up from here, you and the people which you have brought up out of the land of Mitzrayim (Egypt), unto the land which I swore unto Avraham (Abraham), to Yitzḥak (Isaac), and to Yaakov (Jacob), saying, ‘Unto your seed will I give it’;

33:2and I will send an angel before you; and I will drive out the Kena’ani (Canaanites), the Emori (Amorites), and the Ḥitti (Hittites), and the Perizzi (Perizzites), the Ḥivi (Hivites), and the Yevusi (Jebusites);

33:3unto a land flowing with milk and honey; for I will not go up in the midst of you, for you are a stiffnecked people, lest I consume you on the way.”

33:4And when the people heard these evil tidings, they mourned; and no man put on his ornaments.

33:5For Hashem had said unto Moshe, “Say unto the children of Yisrael (Israel), ‘You are a stiffnecked people; if I should go up into the midst of you for one moment, I would consume you; therefore now put off your ornaments from you, that I may know what to do unto you.’”

33:6And the children of Yisrael stripped themselves of their ornaments by Mount Ḥorev (Horeb).

The Tabernacle outside the camp

33:7And Moshe took the tabernacle, and pitched it outside the camp, far off from the camp, and called it the Tabernacle of the congregation. And it came to pass, that every one who sought Hashem went out unto the tabernacle of the congregation, which was outside the camp.

33:8And it came to pass, when Moshe went out unto the tabernacle, that all the people rose up, and stood every man at his tent door, and looked after Moshe, until he had gone into the tabernacle.

33:9And it came to pass, as Moshe entered into the tabernacle, the pillar of cloud descended, and stood at the door of the tabernacle, and He spoke with Moshe.

33:10And all the people saw the pillar of cloud stand at the tabernacle door; and all the people rose up and worshipped, every man in his tent door.

33:11And Hashem spoke unto Moshe face to face, as a man speaks unto his friend. And he returned to the camp; but his servant Yehoshua (Joshua), the son of Nun, a young man, departed not out of the tabernacle.

My presence shall go with you

33:12And Moshe said unto Hashem, “See, You say unto me, ‘Bring up this people,’ and You have not let me know whom You will send with me. Yet You have said, ‘I know you by name, and you have also found grace in My sight.’

33:13Now therefore, I pray You, if I have found grace in Your sight, show me now Your way, that I may know You, that I may find grace in Your sight; and consider that this nation is Your people.”

33:14And He said, “My presence shall go with you, and I will give you rest.”

33:15And he said unto Him, “If Your presence go not with me, carry us not up from here.

33:16For how shall it be known here that I and Your people have found grace in Your sight? Is it not in that You go with us? So shall we be separated, I and Your people, from all the people that are upon the face of the earth.”

33:17And Hashem said unto Moshe, “I will do this thing also that you have spoken; for you have found grace in My sight, and I know you by name.”

Show me your glory

33:18And he said, “I beseech You, show me Your glory.”

33:19And He said, “I will make all My goodness pass before you, and I will proclaim the name of Hashem before you; and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy.”

33:20And He said, “You cannot see My face; for no man shall see Me, and live.”

33:21And Hashem said, “Behold, there is a place by Me, and you shall stand upon the rock;

33:22and it shall come to pass, while My glory passes by, that I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and will cover you with My hand while I pass by;

33:23and I will take away My hand, and you shall see My back; but My face shall not be seen.”

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Exodus they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 7, 8, 20, 21 and 22; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
