Text (469) 608-9944Exodus, Chapter 34
Moshe hews two new tablets and goes up Mount Sinai, where Hashem passes by and proclaims His name; Hashem renews the covenant with commands against the nations’ gods, for the feasts, the firstborn and the Shabbat; after forty days Moshe comes down with his face shining and covers it with a veil.
34:1And Hashem said unto Moshe (Moses), “Hew for yourself two tablets of stone like unto the first; and I will write upon these tablets the words that were on the first tablets, which you broke.
34:2And be ready in the morning, and come up in the morning unto Mount Sinai, and present yourself there to Me on the top of the mountain.
34:3And no man shall come up with you, neither let any man be seen throughout all the mountain; neither let the flocks nor herds feed before that mountain.”
34:4And he hewed two tablets of stone like unto the first; and Moshe rose up early in the morning, and went up unto Mount Sinai, as Hashem had commanded him, and took in his hand the two tablets of stone.
34:5And Hashem descended in the cloud, and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of Hashem.
34:6And Hashem passed by before him, and proclaimed, “Hashem, Hashem, God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth,
34:7keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children’s children, unto the third and to the fourth generation.”
34:8And Moshe made haste, and bowed his head toward the earth, and worshipped.
34:9And he said, “If now I have found grace in Your sight, O Lord, let my Lord, I pray You, go among us; for it is a stiffnecked people; and pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us for Your inheritance.”
34:10And He said, “Behold, I make a covenant; before all your people I will do marvels, such as have not been done in all the earth, nor in any nation; and all the people among which you are shall see the work of Hashem, for it is an awesome thing that I will do with you.
34:11Observe that which I command you this day; behold, I drive out before you the Emori, and the Kena’ani, and the Ḥitti, and the Perizzi, and the Ḥivi, and the Yevusi.
34:12Take heed to yourself, lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land where you go, lest it be for a snare in the midst of you;
34:13but you shall destroy their altars, break their images, and cut down their groves;
34:14for you shall worship no other god; for Hashem, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God;
34:15lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, and they go a whoring after their gods, and do sacrifice unto their gods, and one call you, and you eat of his sacrifice;
34:16and you take of their daughters unto your sons, and their daughters go a whoring after their gods, and make your sons go a whoring after their gods.
34:17You shall make for yourself no molten gods.
34:18The feast of unleavened bread shall you keep. Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, as I commanded you, at the time appointed in the month Aviv (Abib); for in the month Aviv you came out from Mitzrayim (Egypt).
34:19All that opens the womb is Mine; and every firstling among your cattle, whether ox or sheep, that is male.
34:20But the firstling of a donkey you shall redeem with a lamb; and if you redeem it not, then shall you break its neck. All the firstborn of your sons you shall redeem. And none shall appear before Me empty.
34:21Six days you shall work, but on the seventh day you shall rest; in plowing time and in harvest you shall rest.
34:22And you shall observe the feast of weeks, of the firstfruits of wheat harvest, and the feast of ingathering at the year’s end.
34:23Three times in the year shall all your males appear before the Lord Hashem, the God of Yisrael (Israel).
34:24For I will cast out nations before you, and enlarge your borders; neither shall any man desire your land, when you go up to appear before Hashem your God three times in the year.
34:25You shall not offer the blood of My sacrifice with leaven; neither shall the sacrifice of the feast of Pesaḥ (Passover) be left unto the morning.
34:26The first of the firstfruits of your land you shall bring unto the house of Hashem your God. You shall not boil a kid in its mother’s milk.”
34:27And Hashem said unto Moshe, “Write for yourself these words; for after the tenor of these words I have made a covenant with you and with Yisrael.”
34:28And he was there with Hashem forty days and forty nights; he did neither eat bread, nor drink water. And He wrote upon the tablets the words of the covenant, the ten commandments.
34:29And it came to pass, when Moshe came down from Mount Sinai with the two tablets of testimony in Moshe’s hand, when he came down from the mountain, that Moshe knew not that the skin of his face shone while He talked with him.
34:30And when Aharon (Aaron) and all the children of Yisrael saw Moshe, behold, the skin of his face shone; and they were afraid to come near him.
34:31And Moshe called unto them; and Aharon and all the rulers of the congregation returned unto him; and Moshe talked with them.
34:32And afterward all the children of Yisrael came near; and he gave them in commandment all that Hashem had spoken with him on Mount Sinai.
34:33And when Moshe had finished speaking with them, he put a veil on his face.
34:34But when Moshe went in before Hashem to speak with Him, he took the veil off, until he came out. And he came out, and spoke unto the children of Yisrael that which he was commanded.
34:35And the children of Yisrael saw the face of Moshe, that the skin of Moshe’s face shone; and Moshe put the veil upon his face again, until he went in to speak with Him.
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Exodus they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 7, 8, 20, 21 and 22; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
