Matthew, Chapter 8
Coming down from the mountain, Yeshua cleanses a leper, heals a centurion’s servant and Peter’s wife’s mother, and casts out spirits. He tells those who would follow Him what it costs, calms a storm on the sea, and sends the demons of two men into a herd of swine.
8:1When He was come down from the mountain, great multitudes followed Him.
8:2And, behold, there came a leper and worshipped Him, saying, “Master, if You will, You can make me clean.”
8:3And Yeshua (Jesus) put forth His hand, and touched him, saying, “I will; be clean.” And immediately his leprosy was cleansed.
8:4And Yeshua says unto him, “See you tell no man; but go your way, show yourself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moshe (Moses) commanded, for a testimony unto them.”
8:5And when Yeshua was entered into Kefar Naḥum (Capernaum), there came unto Him a centurion, beseeching Him,
8:6And saying, “Master, my servant lies at home sick of the palsy, grievously tormented.”
8:7And Yeshua says unto him, “I will come and heal him.”
8:8The centurion answered and said, “Master, I am not worthy that You should come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed.
8:9For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this man, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”
8:10When Yeshua heard it, He marvelled, and said to them that followed, “Truly I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.
8:11And I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Avraham (Abraham), and Yitzḥak (Isaac), and Ya’akov (Jacob), in the kingdom of heaven.
8:12But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”
8:13And Yeshua said unto the centurion, “Go your way; and as you have believed, so be it done unto you.” And his servant was healed in the selfsame hour.
8:14And when Yeshua was come into Peter’s house, He saw his wife’s mother laid, and sick of a fever.
8:15And He touched her hand, and the fever left her: and she arose, and ministered unto them.
8:16When the even was come, they brought unto Him many that were possessed with demons: and He cast out the spirits with His word, and healed all that were sick:
8:17That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Yesha’yahu (Esaias) the prophet, saying, “Himself took our infirmities, and bore our sicknesses.”
8:18Now when Yeshua saw great multitudes about Him, He gave commandment to depart unto the other side.
8:19And a certain scribe came, and said unto Him, “Rabbi, I will follow You whithersoever You go.”
8:20And Yeshua says unto him, “The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man has not where to lay His head.”
8:21And another of His disciples said unto Him, “Master, permit me first to go and bury my father.”
8:22But Yeshua said unto him, “Follow Me; and let the dead bury their dead.”
8:23And when He was entered into a ship, His disciples followed Him.
8:24And, behold, there arose a great tempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves: but He was asleep.
8:25And His disciples came to Him, and awoke Him, saying, “Master, save us: we perish.”
8:26And He says unto them, “Why are you fearful, O you of little faith?” Then He arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm.
8:27But the men marvelled, saying, “What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey Him!”
οἱ δὲ ἄνθρωποι ἐθαύμασαν, λέγοντες, Ποταπός ἐστιν οὗτος, ὅτι καὶ οἱ ἄνεμοι καὶ ἡ θάλασσα ὑπακούουσιν αὐτῷ;
8:28And when He was come to the other side into the country of the Gergesenes, there met Him two possessed with demons, coming out of the tombs, exceeding fierce, so that no man might pass by that way.
8:29And, behold, they cried out, saying, “What have we to do with You, Yeshua, You Son of God? are You come hither to torment us before the time?”
καὶ ἰδοὺ, ἔκραξαν λέγοντες, Τί ἡμῖν καὶ σοί, Ἰησοῦ υἱὲ τοῦ Θεοῦ; ἦλθες ὧδε πρὸ καιροῦ βασανίσαι ἡμᾶς;
8:30And there was a good way off from them a herd of many swine feeding.
8:31So the demons besought Him, saying, “If You cast us out, permit us to go away into the herd of swine.”
8:32And He said unto them, “Go.” And when they were come out, they went into the herd of swine: and, behold, the whole herd of swine ran violently down a steep place into the sea, and perished in the waters.
8:33And they that kept them fled, and went their ways into the city, and told every thing, and what was befallen to the possessed of the demons.
8:34And, behold, the whole city came out to meet Yeshua: and when they saw Him, they besought Him that He would depart out of their coasts.

- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places with Hebrew names carry them, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yeshua (Jesus)); Greek and Roman names keep their English form. Christ is “Messiah”; Lord, used of Yeshua, is “Master”; where the Greek has Kyrios for God, the English keeps “the Lord.” “Church” is “congregation,” “baptize” is “immerse,” and the Holy Ghost is “the Holy Spirit.”
