Matthew, Chapter 7
Yeshua warns against judging others, teaches His hearers to ask, seek and knock, and gives the rule of doing to others as they would have others do to them. He speaks of the strait gate, of false prophets known by their fruits, and of the wise and foolish builders, and the people are astonished at His teaching.
7:1“Judge not, that you be not judged.
7:2For with what judgment you judge, you shall be judged: and with what measure you mete, it shall be measured to you again.
7:3And why do you behold the mote that is in your brother’s eye, but do not consider the beam that is in your own eye?
τί δὲ βλέπεις τὸ κάρφος τὸ ἐν τῷ ὀφθαλμῷ τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ σου, τὴν δὲ ἐν τῷ σῷ ὀφθαλμῷ δοκὸν οὐ κατανοεῖς;
7:4Or how will you say to your brother, ‘Let me pull out the mote out of your eye’; and, behold, a beam is in your own eye?
ἢ πῶς ἐρεῖς τῷ ἀδελφῷ σου, Ἄφες ἐκβάλω τὸ κάρφος ἀπὸ τοῦ ὀφθαλμοῦ σου, καὶ ἰδοὺ ἡ δοκὸς ἐν τῷ ὀφθαλμῷ σοῦ;
7:5You hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of your own eye; and then shall you see clearly to cast out the mote out of your brother’s eye.
7:6Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.
7:7Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:
7:8For every one that asks receives; and he that seeks finds; and to him that knocks it shall be opened.
7:9Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone?
ἢ τίς ἐστιν ἐξ ὑμῶν ἄνθρωπος, ὃν ἐὰν αἰτήσῃ ὁ υἱὸς αὐτοῦ ἄρτον, μὴ λίθον ἐπιδώσει αὐτῷ;
7:10Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent?
καὶ ἐὰν ἰχθὺν αἰτήσῃ, μὴ ὄφιν ἐπιδώσει αὐτῷ;
7:11If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask Him?
εἰ οὖν ὑμεῖς, πονηροὶ ὄντες, οἴδατε δόματα ἀγαθὰ διδόναι τοῖς τέκνοις ὑμῶν, πόσῳ μᾶλλον ὁ πατὴρ ὑμῶν ὁ ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς δώσει ἀγαθὰ τοῖς αἰτοῦσιν αὐτόν;
7:12Therefore all things whatsoever you would that men should do to you, do even so to them: for this is the Torah and the prophets.
7:13Enter in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leads to destruction, and many there are which go in thereat:
7:14Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leads unto life, and few there are that find it.
7:15Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.
7:16You shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?
ἀπὸ τῶν καρπῶν αὐτῶν ἐπιγνώσεσθε αὐτούς· μήτι συλλέγουσιν ἀπὸ ἀκανθῶν σταφυλὴν, ἢ ἀπὸ τριβόλων σῦκα;
7:17Even so every good tree brings forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree brings forth evil fruit.
7:18A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.
7:19Every tree that brings not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
7:20Wherefore by their fruits you shall know them.
7:21Not every one that says unto Me, ‘Master, Master,’ shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that does the will of My Father which is in heaven.
7:22Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Master, Master, have we not prophesied in Your name? and in Your name have cast out demons? and in Your name done many wonderful works?’
πολλοὶ ἐροῦσί μοι ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ, Κύριε Κύριε, οὐ τῷ σῷ ὀνόματι προεφητεύσαμεν, καὶ τῷ σῷ ὀνόματι δαιμόνια ἐξεβάλομεν, καὶ τῷ σῷ ὀνόματι δυνάμεις πολλὰς ἐποιήσαμεν;
7:23And then will I profess unto them, ‘I never knew you: depart from Me, you that work iniquity.’
7:24Therefore whosoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:
7:25And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.
7:26And every one that hears these sayings of Mine, and does them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:
7:27And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.”
7:28And it came to pass, when Yeshua (Jesus) had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at His doctrine:
7:29For He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.

Sources & method
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places with Hebrew names carry them, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yeshua (Jesus)); Greek and Roman names keep their English form. Christ is “Messiah”; Lord, used of Yeshua, is “Master”; where the Greek has Kyrios for God, the English keeps “the Lord.” “Church” is “congregation,” “baptize” is “immerse,” and the Holy Ghost is “the Holy Spirit.”
