Matthew, Chapter 26

The chief priests plot to take Yeshua, a woman anoints Him at Beit Anyah, and Yehudah Ish-Keriyot agrees to betray Him. Yeshua eats the Passover with the Twelve, prays in Gat-Shemanim, and is arrested and brought before Kayafa and the council, while Peter denies Him three times.

26:1And it came to pass, when Yeshua (Jesus) had finished all these sayings, He said unto His disciples,

26:2“You know that after two days is the feast of the passover, and the Son of man is betrayed to be crucified.”

26:3Then assembled together the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders of the people, unto the palace of the high priest, who was called Kayafa (Caiaphas),

26:4And consulted that they might take Yeshua by subtilty, and kill Him.

26:5But they said, “Not on the feast day, lest there be an uproar among the people.”

Anointed at Beit Anyah

26:6Now when Yeshua was in Beit Anyah (Bethany), in the house of Shim’on (Simon) the leper,

26:7There came unto Him a woman having an alabaster box of very precious ointment, and poured it on His head, as He sat at table.

26:8But when His disciples saw it, they had indignation, saying, “To what purpose is this waste?

ἰδόντες δὲ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ ἠγανάκτησαν, λέγοντες, Εἰς τί ἡ ἀπώλεια αὕτη;

26:9For this ointment might have been sold for much, and given to the poor.”

26:10When Yeshua understood it, He said unto them, “Why trouble you the woman? for she has wrought a good work upon Me.

26:11For you have the poor always with you; but Me you have not always.

26:12For in that she has poured this ointment on My body, she did it for My burial.

26:13Truly I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, there shall also this, that this woman has done, be told for a memorial of her.”

26:14Then one of the twelve, called Yehudah Ish-Keriyot (Judas Iscariot), went unto the chief priests,

26:15And said unto them, “What will you give me, and I will deliver Him unto you?” And they covenanted with him for thirty pieces of silver.

26:16And from that time he sought opportunity to betray Him.

The Passover meal

26:17Now the first day of the feast of unleavened bread the disciples came to Yeshua, saying unto Him, “Where will You that we prepare for You to eat the passover?”

Τῇ δὲ πρώτῃ τῶν ἀζύμων προσῆλθον οἱ μαθηταὶ τῷ Ἰησοῦ, λέγοντες, αὐτῷ, Ποῦ θέλεις ἑτοιμάσωμέν σοι φαγεῖν τὸ πάσχα;

26:18And He said, “Go into the city to such a man, and say unto him, ‘The Rabbi says, My time is at hand; I will keep the passover at your house with My disciples.’”

26:19And the disciples did as Yeshua had appointed them; and they made ready the passover.

26:20Now when the even was come, He sat down with the twelve.

26:21And as they did eat, He said, “Truly I say unto you, that one of you shall betray Me.”

26:22And they were exceeding sorrowful, and began every one of them to say unto Him, “Master, is it I?”

καὶ λυπούμενοι σφόδρα ἤρξαντο λέγειν αὐτῷ ἕκαστος αὐτῶν, Μήτι ἐγώ εἰμι, Κύριε;

26:23And He answered and said, “He that dips his hand with Me in the dish, the same shall betray Me.

26:24The Son of man goes as it is written of Him: but woe unto that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! it had been good for that man if he had not been born.”

26:25Then Yehudah, which betrayed Him, answered and said, “Rabbi, is it I?” He said unto him, “You have said.”

26:26And as they were eating, Yeshua took bread, and blessed it, and broke it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is My body.”

26:27And He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink you all of it;

26:28For this is My blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.

26:29But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father’s kingdom.”

26:30And when they had sung a hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives.

26:31Then says Yeshua unto them, “All you shall be offended because of Me this night: for it is written, ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad.’

Tenakh. Quotes Zechariah 13:7.

26:32But after I am risen again, I will go before you into Galil (Galilee).”

26:33Peter answered and said unto Him, “Though all men shall be offended because of You, yet will I never be offended.”

26:34Yeshua said unto him, “Truly I say unto you, That this night, before the cock crow, you shall deny Me thrice.”

26:35Peter said unto Him, “Though I should die with You, yet will I not deny You.” Likewise also said all the disciples.

In Gat-Shemanim

26:36Then comes Yeshua with them unto a place called Gat-Shemanim (Gethsemane), and says unto the disciples, “Sit you here, while I go and pray yonder.”

26:37And He took with Him Peter and the two sons of Zavdai (Zebedee), and began to be sorrowful and very heavy.

26:38Then says He unto them, “My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry you here, and watch with Me.”

26:39And He went a little farther, and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, “O My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from Me: nevertheless not as I will, but as You will.”

26:40And He comes unto the disciples, and finds them asleep, and says unto Peter, “What, could you not watch with Me one hour?

καὶ ἔρχεται πρὸς τοὺς μαθητάς, καὶ εὑρίσκει αὐτοὺς καθεύδοντας, καὶ λέγει τῷ Πέτρῳ, Οὕτως οὐκ ἰσχύσατε μίαν ὥραν γρηγορῆσαι μετ’ ἐμοῦ;

26:41Watch and pray, that you enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

26:42He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, “O My Father, if this cup may not pass away from Me, except I drink it, Your will be done.”

26:43And He came and found them asleep again: for their eyes were heavy.

26:44And He left them, and went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words.

26:45Then comes He to His disciples, and says unto them, “Sleep on now, and take your rest: behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.

26:46Rise, let us be going: behold, he is at hand that does betray Me.”

Yeshua is arrested

26:47And while He yet spoke, lo, Yehudah, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and elders of the people.

26:48Now he that betrayed Him gave them a sign, saying, “Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is He: hold Him fast.”

26:49And forthwith he came to Yeshua, and said, “Hail, Rabbi;” and kissed Him.

26:50And Yeshua said unto him, “Friend, wherefore are you come?” Then came they, and laid hands on Yeshua, and took Him.

26:51And, behold, one of them which were with Yeshua stretched out his hand, and drew his sword, and struck a servant of the high priest’s, and struck off his ear.

26:52Then said Yeshua unto him, “Put up again your sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword.

26:53Think you that I cannot now pray to My Father, and He shall presently give Me more than twelve legions of angels?

ἢ δοκεῖς ὅτι οὐ δύναμαι ἄρτι παρακαλέσαι τὸν πατέρα μου, καὶ παραστήσει μοι πλείους ἢ δώδεκα λεγεῶνας ἀγγέλων;

26:54But how then shall the scriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must be?”

πῶς οὖν πληρωθῶσιν αἱ γραφαί, ὅτι οὕτω δεῖ γενέσθαι;

26:55In that same hour said Yeshua to the multitudes, “Are you come out as against a thief with swords and staves for to take Me? I sat daily with you teaching in the temple, and you laid no hold on Me.

26:56But all this was done, that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples forsook Him, and fled.

Before Kayafa and the council

26:57And they that had laid hold on Yeshua led Him away to Kayafa the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled.

26:58But Peter followed Him afar off unto the high priest’s palace, and went in, and sat with the servants, to see the end.

26:59Now the chief priests, and elders, and all the council, sought false witness against Yeshua, to put Him to death;

26:60But found none: yea, though many false witnesses came, yet found they none. At the last came two false witnesses,

26:61And said, “This fellow said, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to build it in three days.’”

26:62And the high priest arose, and said unto Him, “Answer You nothing? what is it which these witness against You?”

καὶ ἀναστὰς ὁ ἀρχιερεὺς εἶπεν αὐτῷ, Οὐδὲν ἀποκρίνῃ; τί οὗτοί σου καταμαρτυροῦσιν;

26:63But Yeshua held His peace. And the high priest answered and said unto Him, “I adjure You by the living God, that You tell us whether You be the Messiah, the Son of God.”

26:64Yeshua says unto him, “You have said: nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall you see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.”

26:65Then the high priest rent his clothes, saying, “He has spoken blasphemy; what further need have we of witnesses? behold, now you have heard His blasphemy.

26:66What think you?” They answered and said, “He is guilty of death.”

26:67Then did they spit in His face, and buffeted Him; and others struck Him with the palms of their hands,

26:68Saying, “Prophesy unto us, You Messiah, Who is he that struck You?”

λέγοντες, Προφήτευσον ἡμῖν, Χριστέ, τίς ἐστιν ὁ παίσας σε;

Peter denies Yeshua

26:69Now Peter sat without in the palace: and a damsel came unto him, saying, “You also were with Yeshua of Galil.”

26:70But he denied before them all, saying, “I know not what you say.”

26:71And when he was gone out into the porch, another maid saw him, and said unto them that were there, “This fellow was also with Yeshua of Natzrat (Nazareth).”

26:72And again he denied with an oath, “I do not know the man.”

26:73And after a while came unto him they that stood by, and said to Peter, “Surely you also are one of them; for your speech bewrays you.”

26:74Then began he to curse and to swear, saying, “I know not the man.” And immediately the cock crew.

26:75And Peter remembered the word of Yeshua, which said unto him, “Before the cock crow, you shall deny Me thrice.” And he went out, and wept bitterly.

Sources & method

English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places with Hebrew names carry them, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yeshua (Jesus)); Greek and Roman names keep their English form. Christ is “Messiah”; Lord, used of Yeshua, is “Master”; where the Greek has Kyrios for God, the English keeps “the Lord.” “Church” is “congregation,” “baptize” is “immerse,” and the Holy Ghost is “the Holy Spirit.”
