Matthew, Chapter 15
Scribes and Pharisees from Yerushalayim ask why Yeshua’s disciples transgress the tradition of the elders, and He teaches what defiles a man. A woman of Kena’an begs Him to heal her daughter, and He heals many by the sea of Galil and feeds four thousand men with seven loaves.
15:1Then came to Yeshua (Jesus) scribes and Pharisees, which were of Yerushalayim (Jerusalem), saying,
15:2“Why do Your disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread.”
15:3But He answered and said unto them, “Why do you also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition?
ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς, Διατί καὶ ὑμεῖς παραβαίνετε τὴν ἐντολὴν τοῦ Θεοῦ διὰ τὴν παράδοσιν ὑμῶν;
15:4For God commanded, saying, ‘Honour your father and mother’: and, ‘He that curses father or mother, let him die the death.’
15:5But you say, ‘Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, “It is a gift, by whatsoever you might be profited by me”;
15:6And honour not his father or his mother, he shall be free.’ Thus have you made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition.
15:7You hypocrites, well did Yesha’yahu (Esaias) prophesy of you, saying,
15:8‘This people draws nigh unto Me with their mouth, and honours Me with their lips; but their heart is far from Me.
ח’ניגש העם הזה בפיו, ובשפתיו כבדוני ולבו רחק ממני;
15:9But in vain they do worship Me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.’”
15:10And He called the multitude, and said unto them, “Hear, and understand:
15:11Not that which goes into the mouth defiles a man; but that which comes out of the mouth, this defiles a man.”
15:12Then came His disciples, and said unto Him, “Know You that the Pharisees were offended, after they heard this saying?”
τότε προσελθόντες οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ εἶπον αὐτῷ, Οἶδας ὅτι οἱ Φαρισαῖοι ἀκούσαντες τὸν λόγον ἐσκανδαλίσθησαν;
15:13But He answered and said, “Every plant, which My heavenly Father has not planted, shall be rooted up.
15:14Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch.”
15:15Then answered Peter and said unto Him, “Declare unto us this parable.”
15:16And Yeshua said, “Are you also yet without understanding?
ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν, Ἀκμὴν καὶ ὑμεῖς ἀσύνετοί ἐστε;
15:17Do not you yet understand, that whatsoever enters in at the mouth goes into the belly, and is cast out into the draught?
οὔπω νοεῖτε, ὅτι πᾶν τὸ εἰσπορευόμενον εἰς τὸ στόμα εἰς τὴν κοιλίαν χωρεῖ, καὶ εἰς ἀφεδρῶνα ἐκβάλλεται;
15:18But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man.
15:19For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:
15:20These are the things which defile a man: but to eat with unwashen hands defiles not a man.”
15:21Then Yeshua went thence, and departed into the coasts of Tzor (Tyre) and Tzidon (Sidon).
15:22And, behold, a woman of Kena’an (Canaan) came out of the same coasts, and cried unto Him, saying, “Have mercy on me, O Master, You Son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a demon.”
15:23But He answered her not a word. And His disciples came and besought Him, saying, “Send her away; for she cries after us.”
15:24But He answered and said, “I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”
15:25Then came she and worshipped Him, saying, “Master, help me.”
15:26But He answered and said, “It is not meet to take the children’s bread, and to cast it to dogs.”
15:27And she said, “Truth, Master: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table.”
15:28Then Yeshua answered and said unto her, “O woman, great is your faith: be it unto you even as you will.” And her daughter was made whole from that very hour.
15:29And Yeshua departed from thence, and came nigh unto the sea of Galil (Galilee); and went up into a mountain, and sat down there.
15:30And great multitudes came unto Him, having with them those that were lame, blind, dumb, maimed, and many others, and cast them down at Yeshua’s feet; and He healed them:
15:31Insomuch that the multitude wondered, when they saw the dumb to speak, the maimed to be whole, the lame to walk, and the blind to see: and they glorified the God of Israel.
15:32Then Yeshua called His disciples unto Him, and said, “I have compassion on the multitude, because they continue with Me now three days, and have nothing to eat: and I will not send them away fasting, lest they faint in the way.”
15:33And His disciples say unto Him, “Whence should we have so much bread in the wilderness, as to fill so great a multitude?”
καὶ λέγουσιν αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταί αὐτοῦ, Πόθεν ἡμῖν ἐν ἐρημίᾳ ἄρτοι τοσοῦτοι, ὥστε χορτάσαι ὄχλον τοσοῦτον;
15:34And Yeshua says unto them, “How many loaves have you?” And they said, “Seven, and a few little fishes.”
15:35And He commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground.
15:36And He took the seven loaves and the fishes, and gave thanks, and broke them, and gave to His disciples, and the disciples to the multitude.
15:37And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the broken food that was left seven baskets full.

- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places with Hebrew names carry them, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yeshua (Jesus)); Greek and Roman names keep their English form. Christ is “Messiah”; Lord, used of Yeshua, is “Master”; where the Greek has Kyrios for God, the English keeps “the Lord.” “Church” is “congregation,” “baptize” is “immerse,” and the Holy Ghost is “the Holy Spirit.”
