Matthew, Chapter 1

1:17So all the generations from Avraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David until the carrying away into Bavel are fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Bavel unto Messiah are fourteen generations.
1:18Now the birth of Yeshua the Messiah was on this wise: When as His mother Miryam was espoused to Yosef, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit.
1:19Then Yosef her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away privily.
Ἰωσὴφ δὲ ὁ ἀνὴρ αὐτῆς δίκαιος ὢν, καὶ μὴ θέλων αὐτὴν παραδειγματίσαι, ἐβουλήθη λάθρᾳ ἀπολῦσαι αὐτήν.
יטיוסף ארוסה, שהיה איש ישר וערכי, החליט משום כך לבטל את האירוסין, אולם בחר לעשות זאת בסתר, כי לא רצה לבייש את מרים בציבור.
1:20But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, “Yosef, you son of David, fear not to take unto you Miryam your wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.
1:21And she shall bring forth a son, and you shall call His name Yeshua: for He shall save His people from their sins.”
τέξεται δὲ υἱὸν καὶ καλέσεις τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Ἰησοῦν· αὐτὸς γὰρ σώσει τὸν λαὸν αὐτοῦ ἀπὸ τῶν ἁμαρτιῶν αὐτῶν.
כאמרים תלד בן, ועליך לקרוא לו ’ישוע‘ (כלומר, מושיע), כי הוא יושיע את בני־עמו מחטאיהם.“
1:22Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying,
τοῦτο δὲ ὅλον γέγονεν, ἵνα πληρωθῇ τὸ ῥηθὲν ὑπὸ τοῦ Κυρίου διὰ τοῦ προφήτου λέγοντος,
כבלידתו של ישוע קיימה את מה שאמר אלוהים באמצאות נביאיו:
1:23“Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call His name Immanu’el (Emmanuel),” which being interpreted is, God with us.
Ἰδού, ἡ παρθένος ἐν γαστρὶ ἕξει καὶ τέξεται υἱόν, καὶ καλέσουσι τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Ἐμμανουήλ, ὅ ἐστι μεθερμηνευόμενον, Μεθ’ ἡμῶν ὁ Θεός.
כג”הנה העלמה הרה ויולדת בן, וקראת שמו עמנו אל.“
1:24Then Yosef being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife:
διεγερθεὶς δὲ ὁ Ἰωσὴφ ἀπὸ τοῦ ὕπνου ἐποίησεν ὡς προσέταξεν αὐτῷ ὁ ἄγγελος Κυρίου· καὶ παρέλαβε τὴν γυναῖκα αὐτοῦ,
כדכשיוסף התעורר, הוא עשה מה שציווה עליו המלאך והתחתן עם מרים.
1:25And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called His name Yeshua.
καὶ οὐκ ἐγίνωσκεν αὐτὴν ἕως οὗ ἔτεκε τὸν υἱόν αὐτῆς τὸν πρωτότοκον· καὶ ἐκάλεσε τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ ἸΗΣΟΥΝ.
כהאולם מרים נשארה בתולה עד שנולד בנה, ויוסף קרא לו ”ישוע“.

Sources & method
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places with Hebrew names carry them, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yeshua (Jesus)); Greek and Roman names keep their English form. Christ is “Messiah”; Lord, used of Yeshua, is “Master”; where the Greek has Kyrios for God, the English keeps “the Lord.” “Church” is “congregation,” “baptize” is “immerse,” and the Holy Ghost is “the Holy Spirit.”
