Text (469) 608-9944Isaiah, Chapter 7
When Retzin king of Aram and Pekach son of Remalyahu go up against Yerushalayim, Yesha’yahu and Shear-Yashuv meet Achaz with Hashem’s word that their counsel shall not stand; Achaz will not ask a sign, the sign of Immanu’el is given, and the coming of the king of Ashur upon the land is foretold.
7:1And it came to pass in the days of Achaz (Ahaz) the son of Yotam (Jotham), the son of Uzziyahu (Uzziah), king of Yehudah (Judah), that Retzin (Rezin) the king of Aram (Syria), and Pekach (Pekah) the son of Remalyahu (Remaliah), king of Israel, went up toward Yerushalayim (Jerusalem) to war against it, but could not prevail against it.
7:2And it was told the house of David, saying, “Aram is confederate with Efrayim (Ephraim).” And his heart was moved, and the heart of his people, as the trees of the wood are moved with the wind.
7:3Then said Hashem unto Yesha’yahu (Isaiah), “Go forth now to meet Achaz, you, and Shear-Yashuv (Shear-jashub) your son, at the end of the conduit of the upper pool in the highway of the fuller’s field;
7:4And say unto him, ‘Take heed, and be quiet; fear not, neither be fainthearted for the two tails of these smoking firebrands, for the fierce anger of Retzin with Aram, and of the son of Remalyahu.
7:5Because Aram, Efrayim, and the son of Remalyahu, have taken evil counsel against you, saying,
7:6“Let us go up against Yehudah, and vex it, and let us make a breach therein for us, and set a king in the midst of it, even the son of Tave’al (Tabeal):”
7:7Thus says the Lord Hashem, “It shall not stand, neither shall it come to pass.
7:8For the head of Aram is Damesek (Damascus), and the head of Damesek is Retzin; and within sixty and five years shall Efrayim be broken, that it be not a people.
7:9And the head of Efrayim is Shomron (Samaria), and the head of Shomron is Remalyahu’s son. If you will not believe, surely you shall not be established.”’”
7:10Moreover Hashem spoke again unto Achaz, saying,
7:11“Ask you a sign of Hashem your God; ask it either in the depth, or in the height above.”
7:12But Achaz said, “I will not ask, neither will I tempt Hashem.”
7:13And he said, “Hear you now, O house of David; Is it a small thing for you to weary men, but will you weary my God also?
7:14Therefore the Lord Himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanu’el (Immanuel).
7:15Butter and honey shall he eat, that he may know to refuse the evil, and choose the good.
7:16For before the child shall know to refuse the evil, and choose the good, the land that you abhor shall be forsaken of both her kings.
7:17Hashem shall bring upon you, and upon your people, and upon your father’s house, days that have not come, from the day that Efrayim departed from Yehudah; even the king of Ashur (Assyria).”
7:18And it shall come to pass in that day, that Hashem shall hiss for the fly that is in the uttermost part of the rivers of Mitzrayim (Egypt), and for the bee that is in the land of Ashur.
7:19And they shall come, and shall rest all of them in the desolate valleys, and in the holes of the rocks, and upon all thorns, and upon all bushes.
7:20In the same day shall the Lord shave with a razor that is hired, namely, by them beyond the river, by the king of Ashur, the head, and the hair of the feet: and it shall also consume the beard.
7:21And it shall come to pass in that day, that a man shall nourish a young cow, and two sheep;
7:22And it shall come to pass, for the abundance of milk that they shall give he shall eat butter: for butter and honey shall every one eat that is left in the land.
7:23And it shall come to pass in that day, that every place shall be, where there were a thousand vines at a thousand silverlings, it shall even be for briers and thorns.
7:24With arrows and with bows shall men come thither; because all the land shall become briers and thorns.
7:25And on all hills that shall be digged with the mattock, there shall not come thither the fear of briers and thorns: but it shall be for the sending forth of oxen, and for the treading of lesser cattle.
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Isaiah they differ from most English Bibles in chapters 8–9 (9:1 there is 8:23 here) and 63–64 (64:1 there is the end of 63:19 here); a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
