Mark, Chapter 14

The chief priests plot to kill Yeshua, a woman anoints Him at Beit Anyah, and Yehudah agrees to betray Him. Yeshua eats the Passover with the Twelve, prays in Gat-Shemanim, and is arrested and condemned before the high priest, while Peter denies Him three times.

14:1After two days was the feast of the passover, and of unleavened bread: and the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might take Him by craft, and put Him to death.

14:2But they said, “Not on the feast day, lest there be an uproar of the people.”

Anointed at Beit Anyah

14:3And being in Beit Anyah (Bethany) in the house of Shim’on (Simon) the leper, as He sat at table, there came a woman having an alabaster box of ointment of spikenard very precious; and she broke the box, and poured it on His head.

14:4And there were some that had indignation within themselves, and said, “Why was this waste of the ointment made?

ἦσαν δέ τινες ἀγανακτοῦντες πρὸς ἑαυτούς, καὶ λέγοντες, Εἰς τί ἡ ἀπώλεια αὕτη τοῦ μύρου γέγονεν;

14:5For it might have been sold for more than three hundred denarii, and have been given to the poor.” And they murmured against her.

14:6And Yeshua (Jesus) said, “Let her alone; why do you trouble her? she has wrought a good work on Me.

14:7For you have the poor with you always, and whensoever you will you may do them good: but Me you have not always.

14:8She has done what she could: she is come aforehand to anoint My body to the burying.

14:9Truly I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, this also that she has done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her.”

14:10And Yehudah Ish-Keriyot (Judas Iscariot), one of the Twelve, went unto the chief priests, to betray Him unto them.

14:11And when they heard it, they were glad, and promised to give him money. And he sought how he might conveniently betray Him.

The Passover meal

14:12And the first day of unleavened bread, when they killed the passover, His disciples said unto Him, “Where will You that we go and prepare that You may eat the passover?”

Καὶ τῇ πρώτῃ ἡμέρᾳ τῶν ἀζύμων, ὅτε τὸ πάσχα ἔθυον, λέγουσιν αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ, Ποῦ θέλεις ἀπελθόντες ἑτοιμάσωμεν ἵνα φάγῃς τὸ πάσχα;

14:13And He sends forth two of His disciples, and says unto them, “Go into the city, and there shall meet you a man bearing a pitcher of water: follow him.

14:14And wheresoever he shall go in, say to the goodman of the house, ‘The Rabbi says, Where is the guestchamber, where I shall eat the passover with My disciples?’

καὶ ὅπου ἐὰν εἰσέλθῃ, εἴπατε τῷ οἰκοδεσπότῃ, ὅτι Ὁ διδάσκαλος λέγει, Ποῦ ἐστι τὸ κατάλυμά, ὅπου τὸ πάσχα μετὰ τῶν μαθητῶν μου φάγω;

14:15And he will show you a large upper room furnished and prepared: there make ready for us.”

14:16And His disciples went forth, and came into the city, and found as He had said unto them: and they made ready the passover.

14:17And in the evening He comes with the Twelve.

14:18And as they sat and did eat, Yeshua said, “Truly I say unto you, One of you which eats with Me shall betray Me.”

14:19And they began to be sorrowful, and to say unto Him one by one, “Is it I?” and another said, “Is it I?”

οἱ δὲ ἤρξαντο λυπεῖσθαι, καὶ λέγειν αὐτῷ εἷς καθ’ εἷς, Μή τι ἐγώ; καὶ ἄλλος, Μή τι ἐγώ;

14:20And He answered and said unto them, “It is one of the Twelve, that dips with Me in the dish.

14:21The Son of man indeed goes, as it is written of Him: but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! good were it for that man if he had never been born.”

14:22And as they did eat, Yeshua took bread, and blessed, and broke it, and gave to them, and said, “Take, eat: this is My body.”

14:23And He took the cup, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them: and they all drank of it.

14:24And He said unto them, “This is My blood of the new testament, which is shed for many.

14:25Truly I say unto you, I will drink no more of the fruit of the vine, until that day that I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”

14:26And when they had sung a hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives.

14:27And Yeshua says unto them, “All you shall be offended because of Me this night: for it is written, ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered.’

Tenakh. Quotes Zechariah 13:7.

14:28But after that I am risen, I will go before you into Galil (Galilee).”

14:29But Peter said unto Him, “Although all shall be offended, yet will not I.”

14:30And Yeshua says unto him, “Truly I say unto you, That this day, even in this night, before the cock crow twice, you shall deny Me thrice.”

14:31But he spoke the more vehemently, “If I should die with You, I will not deny You in any wise.” Likewise also said they all.

Prayer in Gat-Shemanim

14:32And they came to a place which was named Gat-Shemanim (Gethsemane): and He says to His disciples, “Sit here, while I shall pray.”

14:33And He takes with Him Peter and Ya’akov (James) and Yoḥanan (John), and began to be sore amazed, and to be very heavy;

14:34And says unto them, “My soul is exceeding sorrowful unto death: tarry here, and watch.”

14:35And He went forward a little, and fell on the ground, and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from Him.

14:36And He said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible unto You; take away this cup from Me: nevertheless not what I will, but what You will.”

14:37And He comes, and finds them sleeping, and says unto Peter, “Shim’on, do you sleep? could not you watch one hour?

καὶ ἔρχεται, καὶ εὑρίσκει αὐτοὺς καθεύδοντας, καὶ λέγει τῷ Πέτρῳ, Σίμων, καθεύδεις; οὐκ ἴσχυσας μίαν ὥραν γρηγορῆσαι;

14:38Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak.”

14:39And again He went away, and prayed, and spoke the same words.

14:40And when He returned, He found them asleep again, (for their eyes were heavy,) neither knew they what to answer Him.

14:41And He comes the third time, and says unto them, “Sleep on now, and take your rest: it is enough, the hour is come; behold, the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.

14:42Rise up, let us go; lo, he that betrays Me is at hand.”

Yeshua is arrested

14:43And immediately, while He yet spoke, comes Yehudah, one of the Twelve, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priest and the scribes and the elders.

14:44And he that betrayed Him had given them a token, saying, “Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is He; take Him, and lead Him away safely.”

14:45And as soon as he was come, he goes straightway to Him, and says, “Rabbi, Rabbi”; and kissed Him.

14:46And they laid their hands on Him, and took Him.

14:47And one of them that stood by drew a sword, and struck a servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear.

14:48And Yeshua answered and said unto them, “Are you come out, as against a thief, with swords and with staves to take Me?

καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς, Ὡς ἐπὶ λῃστὴν ἐξήλθετε μετὰ μαχαιρῶν καὶ ξύλων συλλαβεῖν με;

14:49I was daily with you in the temple teaching, and you took Me not: but the scriptures must be fulfilled.”

14:50And they all forsook Him, and fled.

14:51And there followed Him a certain young man, having a linen cloth cast about his naked body; and the young men laid hold on him:

14:52And he left the linen cloth, and fled from them naked.

Before the high priest

14:53And they led Yeshua away to the high priest: and with him were assembled all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes.

14:54And Peter followed Him afar off, even into the palace of the high priest: and he sat with the servants, and warmed himself at the fire.

14:55And the chief priests and all the council sought for witness against Yeshua to put Him to death; and found none.

14:56For many bore false witness against Him, but their witness agreed not together.

14:57And there arose certain, and bore false witness against Him, saying,

14:58“We heard Him say, ‘I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and within three days I will build another made without hands.’”

14:59But neither so did their witness agree together.

14:60And the high priest stood up in the midst, and asked Yeshua, saying, “Do You answer nothing? what is it which these witness against You?”

καὶ ἀναστὰς ὁ ἀρχιερεὺς εἰς τὸ μέσον ἐπηρώτησε τὸν Ἰησοῦν, λέγων, Οὐκ ἀποκρίνῃ οὐδέν; τί οὗτοί σου καταμαρτυροῦσιν;

14:61But He held His peace, and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked Him, and said unto Him, “Are You the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed?”

ὁ δὲ ἐσιώπα, καὶ οὐδὲν ἀπεκρίνατο. πάλιν ὁ ἀρχιερεὺς ἐπηρώτα αὐτόν, καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ, Σὺ εἶ ὁ Χριστός, ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ εὐλογητοῦ;

14:62And Yeshua said, “I am: and you shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.”

Tenakh. Quotes Psalm 110:1; Daniel 7:13.

14:63Then the high priest rent his clothes, and says, “What need we any further witnesses?

ὁ δὲ ἀρχιερεὺς διαρρήξας τοὺς χιτῶνας αὐτοῦ λέγει, Τί ἔτι χρείαν ἔχομεν μαρτύρων;

14:64You have heard the blasphemy: what do you think?” And they all condemned Him to be guilty of death.

14:65And some began to spit on Him, and to cover His face, and to buffet Him, and to say unto Him, “Prophesy”: and the servants did strike Him with the palms of their hands.

Peter denies Yeshua

14:66And as Peter was beneath in the palace, there comes one of the maids of the high priest:

14:67And when she saw Peter warming himself, she looked upon him, and said, “And you also were with Yeshua of Natzrat (Nazareth).”

14:68But he denied, saying, “I know not, neither understand I what you say.” And he went out into the porch; and the cock crew.

14:69And a maid saw him again, and began to say to them that stood by, “This is one of them.”

14:70And he denied it again. And a little after, they that stood by said again to Peter, “Surely you are one of them: for you are a Galilean, and your speech agrees thereto.”

14:71But he began to curse and to swear, saying, “I know not this man of whom you speak.”

14:72And the second time the cock crew. And Peter called to mind the word that Yeshua said unto him, “Before the cock crow twice, you shall deny Me thrice.” And when he thought thereon, he wept.

Sources & method

English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places with Hebrew names carry them, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yeshua (Jesus)); Greek and Roman names keep their English form. Christ is “Messiah”; Lord, used of Yeshua, is “Master”; where the Greek has Kyrios for God, the English keeps “the Lord.” “Church” is “congregation,” “baptize” is “immerse,” and the Holy Ghost is “the Holy Spirit.”
