Luke, Chapter 13

Yeshua calls His hearers to repent and tells the parable of the barren fig tree. He heals a woman bent over for eighteen years on the sabbath, likens the kingdom of God to mustard seed and leaven, urges entry by the strait gate, and laments over Yerushalayim.

13:1There were present at that season some that told Him of the Galileans, whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices.

13:2And Yeshua (Jesus) answering said unto them, “Suppose you that these Galileans were sinners above all the Galileans, because they suffered such things?

καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς, Δοκεῖτε ὅτι οἱ Γαλιλαῖοι οὗτοι ἁμαρτωλοὶ παρὰ πάντας τοὺς Γαλιλαίους ἐγένοντο, ὅτι τοιαῦτα πεπόνθασιν;

13:3I tell you, Nay: but, except you repent, you shall all likewise perish.

13:4Or those eighteen, upon whom the tower in Shiloaḥ (Siloam) fell, and slew them, think you that they were sinners above all men that dwelt in Yerushalayim (Jerusalem)?

ἢ ἐκεῖνοι οἱ δέκα καὶ οκτώ, ἐφ’ οὓς ἔπεσεν ὁ πύργος ἐν τῷ Σιλωὰμ καὶ ἀπέκτεινεν αὐτούς, δοκεῖτε ὅτι οὗτοι ὀφειλέται ἐγένοντο παρὰ πάντας ἀνθρώπους τοὺς κατοικοῦντας ἐν Ἰερουσαλήμ;

13:5I tell you, Nay: but, except you repent, you shall all likewise perish.”

The barren fig tree

13:6He spoke also this parable; “A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came and sought fruit thereon, and found none.

13:7Then said he unto the dresser of his vineyard, ‘Behold, these three years I come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and find none: cut it down; why cumbers it the ground?’

εἶπε δὲ πρὸς τὸν ἀμπελουργόν, Ἰδού, τρία ἔτη ἔρχομαι ζητῶν καρπὸν ἐν τῇ συκῇ ταύτῃ, καὶ οὐχ εὑρίσκω· ἔκκοψον αὐτήν· ἱνατί καὶ τὴν γῆν καταργεῖ;

13:8And he answering said unto him, ‘Lord, let it alone this year also, till I shall dig about it, and dung it:

13:9And if it bear fruit, well: and if not, then after that you shall cut it down.’”

A woman healed on the sabbath

13:10And He was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath.

13:11And, behold, there was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bowed together, and could in no wise lift up herself.

13:12And when Yeshua saw her, He called her to Him, and said unto her, “Woman, you are loosed from your infirmity.”

13:13And He laid His hands on her: and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God.

13:14And the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation, because that Yeshua had healed on the sabbath day, and said unto the people, “There are six days in which men ought to work: in them therefore come and be healed, and not on the sabbath day.”

13:15The Master then answered him, and said, “You hypocrite, does not each one of you on the sabbath loose his ox or his donkey from the stall, and lead him away to watering?

ἀπεκρίθη οὖν αὐτῷ ὁ Κύριος, καὶ εἶπεν, Ὑποκριτά, ἕκαστος ὑμῶν τῷ σαββάτῳ οὐ λύει τὸν βοῦν αὑτοῦ ἢ τὸν ὄνον ἀπὸ τῆς φάτνης, καὶ ἀπαγαγὼν ποτίζει;

13:16And ought not this woman, being a daughter of Avraham (Abraham), whom Satan has bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?”

ταύτην δέ, θυγατέρα Ἀβραὰμ οὖσαν, ἣν ἔδησεν ὁ Σατανᾶς, ἰδού, δέκα καὶ ὀκτὼ ἔτη, οὐκ ἔδει λυθῆναι ἀπὸ τοῦ δεσμοῦ τούτου τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τοῦ σαββάτου;

13:17And when He had said these things, all His adversaries were ashamed: and all the people rejoiced for all the glorious things that were done by Him.

Mustard seed and leaven

13:18Then said He, “Unto what is the kingdom of God like? and whereunto shall I resemble it?

Ἔλεγε δέ, Τίνι ὁμοία ἐστὶν ἡ βασιλεία τοῦ Θεοῦ; καὶ τίνι ὁμοιώσω αὐτήν;

13:19It is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and cast into his garden; and it grew, and waxed a great tree; and the fowls of the air lodged in the branches of it.”

13:20And again He said, “Whereunto shall I liken the kingdom of God?

καὶ πάλιν εἶπε, Τίνι ὁμοιώσω τὴν βασιλείαν τοῦ Θεοῦ;

13:21It is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened.”

The strait gate

13:22And He went through the cities and villages, teaching, and journeying toward Yerushalayim.

13:23Then said one unto Him, “Master, are there few that be saved?” And He said unto them,

13:24“Strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able.

13:25When once the master of the house is risen up, and has shut to the door, and you begin to stand without, and to knock at the door, saying, ‘Master, Master, open unto us;’ and He shall answer and say unto you, ‘I know you not whence you are:’

13:26Then shall you begin to say, ‘We have eaten and drunk in Your presence, and You have taught in our streets.’

13:27But He shall say, ‘I tell you, I know you not whence you are; depart from Me, all you workers of iniquity.’

Tenakh. Quotes Psalm 6:9 (KJV 6:8).

13:28There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when you shall see Avraham, and Yitzḥak (Isaac), and Ya’akov (Jacob), and all the prophets, in the kingdom of God, and you yourselves thrust out.

13:29And they shall come from the east, and from the west, and from the north, and from the south, and shall sit down in the kingdom of God.

13:30And, behold, there are last which shall be first, and there are first which shall be last.”

Lament over Yerushalayim

13:31The same day there came certain of the Pharisees, saying unto Him, “Get You out, and depart hence: for Herod will kill You.”

13:32And He said unto them, “Go you, and tell that fox, ‘Behold, I cast out demons, and I do cures to day and to morrow, and the third day I shall be perfected.’

13:33Nevertheless I must walk to day, and to morrow, and the day following: for it cannot be that a prophet perish out of Yerushalayim.

13:34O Yerushalayim, Yerushalayim, which kills the prophets, and stones them that are sent unto you; how often would I have gathered your children together, as a hen does gather her brood under her wings, and you would not!

13:35Behold, your house is left unto you desolate: and truly I say unto you, You shall not see Me, until the time come when you shall say, ‘Blessed is He that comes in the name of the Lord.’”

Tenakh. Quotes Psalm 118:26.

Sources & method

English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places with Hebrew names carry them, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yeshua (Jesus)); Greek and Roman names keep their English form. Christ is “Messiah”; Lord, used of Yeshua, is “Master”; where the Greek has Kyrios for God, the English keeps “the Lord.” “Church” is “congregation,” “baptize” is “immerse,” and the Holy Ghost is “the Holy Spirit.”
