James, Chapter 1

יעקב א

Ya’akov greets the twelve tribes scattered abroad and teaches that the trying of faith works patience, that wisdom is to be asked of God in faith, and that temptation comes from a man’s own lust. He calls his readers to be doers of the word and not hearers only, and describes pure religion.

1:1Ya’akov (James), a servant of God and of the Master Yeshua (Jesus) the Messiah, to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad, greeting.

Ἰάκωβος, Θεοῦ καὶ Κυρίου Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ δοῦλος, ταῖς δώδεκα φυλαῖς ταῖς ἐν τῇ διασπορᾷ, χαίρειν.

אאל שנים עשר השבטים שפזורים בתפוצות. מאת יעקב, עבדו של אלוהים ושל ישוע המשיח. שלום וברכה לכולכם!

Joy in trials

1:2My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into divers temptations;

Πᾶσαν χαρὰν ἡγήσασθε, ἀδελφοί μου, ὅταν πειρασμοῖς περιπέσητε ποικίλοις,

באחים יקרים, אם יש לכם צרות ובעיות, ואם אתם עומדים בפני פיתויים חזקים, תחשיבו זאת כהזדמנות לשמחה גדולה.

1:3Knowing this, that the trying of your faith works patience.

γινώσκοντες ὅτι τὸ δοκίμιον ὑμῶν τῆς πίστεως κατεργάζεται ὑπομονήν·

גשכן צרות, בעיות ופיתויים מחזקים את כוח הסבל.

1:4But let patience have her perfect work, that you may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.

ἡ δὲ ὑπομονὴ ἔργον τέλειον ἐχέτω, ἵνα ἦτε τέλειοι καὶ ὁλόκληροι, ἐν μηδενὶ λειπόμενοι.

דלכן אל תברחו מהבעיות, אלא תנו לסבלנותכם להתחזק. כאשר תהיה סבלנותכם חזקה די הצורך, לא יחסר לכם דבר, אופייכם יהיה חזק מן הרגיל ותהיו מסוגלים לכל דבר.

1:5If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that gives to all men liberally, and upbraids not; and it shall be given him.

1:6But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavers is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.

1:7For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.

μὴ γὰρ οἰέσθω ὁ ἄνθρωπος ἐκεῖνος ὅτι λήψεταί τι παρὰ τοῦ Κυρίου.

ז–חאדם ספקן הוא אדם הפכפך שמשנה את דעתו בכל רגע, שכן אינו בטוח בהחלטותיו. אם אינכם מבקשים באמונה, אל תצפו מה׳ להיענות לכם.

1:8A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.

ἀνὴρ δίψυχος, ἀκατάστατος ἐν πάσαις ταῖς ὁδοῖς αὐτοῦ.

The lowly and the rich

1:9Let the brother of low degree rejoice in that he is exalted:

Καυχάσθω δὲ ὁ ἀδελφὸς ὁ ταπεινὸς ἐν τῷ ὕψει αὐτοῦ·

טמאמין משיחי הנחשב לעני בעולם הזה צריך לשמוח, כי בעיני אלוהים הוא חשוב מאוד,

1:10But the rich, in that he is made low: because as the flower of the grass he shall pass away.

ὁ δὲ πλούσιος ἐν τῇ ταπεινώσει αὐτοῦ· ὅτι ὡς ἄνθος χόρτου παρελεύσεται.

י–יאוהמאמין העשיר צריך לשמוח על שעושרו חסר כל ערך בעיני ה׳. כי כמו הפרח שמאבד את יופיו, מתייבש בקרני השמש הצורבות וָמֶת, כך ימותו העשירים תוך זמן קצר וישאירו אחריהם את כל רכושם.

1:11For the sun is no sooner risen with a burning heat, but it withers the grass, and the flower thereof falls, and the grace of the fashion of it perishes: so also shall the rich man fade away in his ways.

ἀνέτειλε γὰρ ὁ ἥλιος σὺν τῷ καύσωνι, καὶ ἐξήρανε τὸν χόρτον, καὶ τὸ ἄνθος αὐτοῦ ἐξέπεσε, καὶ ἡ εὐπρέπεια τοῦ προσώπου αὐτοῦ ἀπώλετο· οὕτω καὶ ὁ πλούσιος ἐν ταῖς πορείαις αὐτοῦ μαρανθήσεται.

Temptation and every good gift

1:12Blessed is the man that endures temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord has promised to them that love Him.

Μακάριος ἀνὴρ ὃς ὑπομένει πειρασμόν· ὅτι δόκιμος γενόμενος λήψεταί τὸν στέφανον τῆς ζωῆς, ὃν ἐπηγγείλατο ὁ Κύριος τοῖς ἀγαπῶσιν αὐτόν.

יבטוב לאדם שעומד בפיתויים ולא נכשל, כי הוא יקבל פרס – את כתר החיים שהבטיח ה׳ לכל האוהבים אותו.

1:13Let no man say when he is tempted, “I am tempted of God”: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempts He any man:

1:14But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.

ἕκαστος δὲ πειράζεται, ὑπὸ τῆς ἰδίας ἐπιθυμίας ἐξελκόμενος καὶ δελεαζόμενος.

ידמקור הפיתויים הוא בלב האדם, בתשוקותיו ובמחשבותיו הרעות.

1:15Then when lust has conceived, it brings forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, brings forth death.

εἶτα ἡ ἐπιθυμία συλλαβοῦσα τίκτει ἁμαρτίαν· ἡ δὲ ἁμαρτία ἀποτελεσθεῖσα ἀποκύει θάνατον.

טוהמחשבות האלה מולידות מעשים רעים. כאשר נותנים לחטא לצמוח, זה מוליד מוות.

1:16Do not err, my beloved brethren.

μὴ πλανᾶσθε, ἀδελφοί μου ἀγαπητοί.

טזלכן, אחים יקרים, אל תטעו בשום פנים.

1:17Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

1:18Of His own will begat He us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures.

βουληθεὶς ἀπεκύησεν ἡμᾶς λόγῳ ἀληθείας, εἰς τὸ εἶναι ἡμᾶς ἀπαρχήν τινα τῶν αὐτοῦ κτισμάτων.

יחאלוהים בחר מרצונו החופשי לתת לנו חיים חדשים, באמצעות האמת שבכתבי־הקודש, וכך הפכנו להיות הילדים הראשונים במשפחתו החדשה.

Doers of the word

1:19Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:

Ὥστε, ἀδελφοί μου ἀγαπητοί, ἔστω πᾶς ἄνθρωπος ταχὺς εἰς τὸ ἀκοῦσαι, βραδὺς εἰς τὸ λαλῆσαι, βραδὺς εἰς ὀργήν·

יטזכרו, אחים יקרים, כולם צריכים להיות מהירים להקשיב, אך איטיים לדבר ואיטיים להתרגז,

1:20For the wrath of man works not the righteousness of God.

ὀργὴ γὰρ ἀνδρὸς δικαιοσύνην Θεοῦ οὐ κατεργάζεται.

ככי הרוגז מכער אותנו ואת אופיינו, ואילו ה׳ רוצה שנהיה טובים ומושלמים.

1:21Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.

διὸ ἀποθέμενοι πᾶσαν ῥυπαρίαν καὶ περισσείαν κακίας, ἐν πραΰτητι δέξασθε τὸν ἔμφυτον λόγον, τὸν δυνάμενον σῶσαι τὰς ψυχὰς ὑμῶν.

כאעל כן היפטרו מכל דבר רע בחייכם, מבפנים ומבחוץ, וקבלו בשמחה ובענווה את דבר אלוהים אשר בכוחו להושיענו.

1:22But be you doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.

γίνεσθε δὲ ποιηταὶ λόγου, καὶ μὴ μόνον ἀκροαταὶ, παραλογιζόμενοι ἑαυτούς.

כבעליכם לבצע את דבר אלוהים הלכה למעשה, כי אם אתם מקשיבים ואינכם מקיימים, אתם מרמים את עצמכם.

1:23For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:

ὅτι εἴ τις ἀκροατὴς λόγου ἐστὶ καὶ οὐ ποιητής, οὗτος ἔοικεν ἀνδρὶ κατανοοῦντι τὸ πρόσωπον τῆς γενέσεως αὐτοῦ ἐν ἐσόπτρῳ·

כגמי שמקשיב בלבד ואינו מקיים את אשר שמע, דומה לאדם שמביט בדמותו במראה;

1:24For he beholds himself, and goes his way, and straightway forgets what manner of man he was.

κατενόησε γὰρ ἑαυτὸν, καὶ ἀπελήλυθε, καὶ εὐθέως ἐπελάθετο ὁποῖος ἦν.

כדברגע שהוא מפנה את גבו למראה, שוב אינו יכול לראות את בבואתו ושוכח כיצד הוא נראה.

1:25But whoso looks into the perfect law of liberty, and continues therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.

Pure religion

1:26If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridles not his tongue, but deceives his own heart, this man’s religion is vain.

εἴ τις δοκεῖ θρησκὸς εἶναι ἐν ὑμῖν, μὴ χαλιναγωγῶν γλῶσσαν αὐτοῦ, ἀλλ’ ἀπατῶν καρδίαν αὐτοῦ, τούτου μάταιος ἡ θρησκεία.

כוהטוען שהוא מאמין משיחי, אך אינו מסוגל לשלוט בלשונו, מרמה את עצמו, ואמונתו אינה שווה הרבה.

1:27Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.

Sources & method

English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places with Hebrew names carry them, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yeshua (Jesus)); Greek and Roman names keep their English form. Christ is “Messiah”; Lord, used of Yeshua, is “Master”; where the Greek has Kyrios for God, the English keeps “the Lord.” “Church” is “congregation,” “baptize” is “immerse,” and the Holy Ghost is “the Holy Spirit.”
