Hebrews, Chapter 4

עברים ד

A promise of entering into God’s rest remains, for those who first heard it entered not in because of unbelief, and Yehoshua did not give them rest. The word of God is living and sharp, and believers are urged to hold fast and come boldly to the throne of grace through Yeshua, the great high priest.

A rest for the people of God

4:1Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into His rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.

4:2For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.

4:3For we which have believed do enter into rest, as He said, “As I have sworn in My wrath, if they shall enter into My rest:” although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.

Tenakh. Quotes Psalm 95:11.

4:4For He spoke in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, “And God did rest the seventh day from all His works.”

εἴρηκε γάρ που περὶ τῆς ἑβδόμης οὕτω, Καὶ κατέπαυσεν ὁ Θεὸς ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῇ ἑβδόμῃ ἀπὸ πάντων τῶν ἔργων αὐτοῦ·

דכפי שכתוב בבראשית: ”וישבות ביום השביעי מכל מלאכתו“.

Tenakh. Quotes Genesis 2:2.

4:5And in this place again, “If they shall enter into My rest.”

καὶ ἐν τούτῳ πάλιν, Εἰ εἰσελεύσονται εἰς τὴν κατάπαυσίν μου.

האף־על־פי־כן לא באו בני־ישראל אל מנוחתו, כי אלוהים אמר: ”הם לא יבואו אל מנוחתי“.

Tenakh. Quotes Psalm 95:11.

4:6Seeing therefore it remains that some must enter therein, and they to whom it was first preached entered not in because of unbelief:

ἐπεὶ οὖν ἀπολείπεται τινὰς εἰσελθεῖν εἰς αὐτήν, καὶ οἱ πρότερον εὐαγγελισθέντες οὐκ εἰσῆλθον δι’ ἀπείθειαν,

ואך הבטחת אלוהים עדיין בתוקף, ויש הבאים אל מנוחתו – אך לא אלה שהחמיצו את ההזדמנות הראשונה, שכן הימרו את פי ה׳.

4:7Again, He limits a certain day, saying in David, “Today,” after so long a time; as it is said, “Today if you will hear His voice, harden not your hearts.”

Tenakh. Quotes Psalm 95:7–8.

4:8For if Yehoshua (Jesus) had given them rest, then would He not afterward have spoken of another day.

εἰ γὰρ αὐτοὺς Ἰησοῦς κατέπαυσεν, οὐκ ἂν περὶ ἄλλης ἐλάλει μετὰ ταῦτα ἡμέρας.

חאילו מקום מנוחתו של אלוהים היה ארץ־ישראל, הוא לא היה קובע מועד נוסף שמאפשר לבוא אל מנוחתו, שהרי יהושע כבר הביא את בני־ישראל אל ארץ־ישראל.

4:9There remains therefore a rest to the people of God.

ἄρα ἀπολείπεται σαββατισμὸς τῷ λαῷ τοῦ Θεοῦ.

טלפיכך, לעם־אלוהים עדיין צפויה מנוחה שלמה.

4:10For he that is entered into his rest, he also has ceased from his own works, as God did from His.

4:11Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.

σπουδάσωμεν οὖν εἰσελθεῖν εἰς ἐκείνην τὴν κατάπαυσιν, ἵνα μὴ ἐν τῷ αὐτῷ τις ὑποδείγματι πέσῃ τῆς ἀπειθείας.

יאהבה נשתדל כמיטב יכולתנו להיכנס אל מקום מנוחתו של אלוהים, כדי שאיש מאיתנו לא ייכשל ולא ימרה את פי אלוהים, כפי שעשו בני־ישראל.

The word of God is living

4:12For the word of God is living, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

4:13Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in His sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of Him with whom we have to do.

Our great high priest

4:14Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Yeshua (Jesus) the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.

Ἔχοντες οὖν ἀρχιερέα μέγαν, διεληλυθότα τοὺς οὐρανούς, Ἰησοῦν τὸν υἱὸν τοῦ Θεοῦ, κρατῶμεν τῆς ὁμολογίας.

ידאך היות שיש לנו כהן גדול, ישוע בן־האלוהים, אשר עלה לשמים כדי לעזור לנו, לעולם אל נחדל לבטוח בו!

4:15For we have not a high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.

οὐ γὰρ ἔχομεν ἀρχιερέα μὴ δυνάμενον συμπαθῆσαι ταῖς ἀσθενείαις ἡμῶν, πεπειρασμένον δὲ κατὰ πάντα καθ’ ὁμοιότητα, χωρὶς ἁμαρτίας.

טוהכהן הגדול שלנו מבין את חולשותינו, שכן הוא עצמו התנסה כמונו באותם פיתויים, אך הוא לא חטא מעולם.

4:16Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

προσερχώμεθα οὖν μετὰ παρρησίας τῷ θρόνῳ τῆς χάριτος, ἵνα λάβωμεν ἔλεον, καὶ χάριν εὕρωμεν εἰς εὔκαιρον βοήθειαν.

טזמשום כך, הבה נתקרב בביטחון לכסא אלוהים, כדי שיעניק לנו את חסדו ורחמיו אשר יעזרו לנו בעת הצורך.

Sources & method

English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places with Hebrew names carry them, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yeshua (Jesus)); Greek and Roman names keep their English form. Christ is “Messiah”; Lord, used of Yeshua, is “Master”; where the Greek has Kyrios for God, the English keeps “the Lord.” “Church” is “congregation,” “baptize” is “immerse,” and the Holy Ghost is “the Holy Spirit.”
