Text (469) 608-9944Genesis, Chapter 2
God rests on the seventh day and sanctifies it; Hashem God forms man from the dust, plants the Garden of Eden with its four rivers, commands the man not to eat of the tree of knowledge, and builds the woman from his rib.
2:1Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.
2:2And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had made; and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had made.
2:3And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it, because in it He had rested from all His work which God created and made.
2:4These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that Hashem God made the earth and the heavens,
2:5and every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew; for Hashem God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground.
2:6But there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground.
2:7And Hashem God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
2:8And Hashem God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there He put the man whom He had formed.
2:9And out of the ground Hashem God made to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.
2:10And a river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from there it was parted, and became four heads.
2:11The name of the first is Pishon; that is the one which surrounds the whole land of Ḥavilah (Havilah), where there is gold;
2:12and the gold of that land is good; there is bdellium and the onyx stone.
2:13And the name of the second river is Giḥon; the same is the one that surrounds the whole land of Kush (Cush).
2:14And the name of the third river is Ḥidekel (Tigris); that is the one which goes toward the east of Ashur (Assyria). And the fourth river is Perat (Euphrates).
2:15And Hashem God took the man, and put him into the Garden of Eden to work it and to keep it.
2:16And Hashem God commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat;
2:17but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, you shall not eat of it; for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”
2:18And Hashem God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a help suitable for him.”
2:19And out of the ground Hashem God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air, and brought them unto the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name.
2:20And the man gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam (Mankind) there was not found a help suitable for him.
2:21And Hashem God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place.
2:22And the rib, which Hashem God had taken from the man, He made into a woman, and brought her unto the man.
2:23And the man said, “This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman (Ishah), because she was taken out of Man (Ish).”
2:24Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife; and they shall be one flesh.
2:25And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Genesis they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 31 and 32; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
